If projections by the World Health Organization(WHO)Monday that thousands more Liberians could becomeinfected with the deadly Ebola virus in the coming weekshold true, by the time the world gather at the 69th summit

of the United Nations next week, the Ebola-hit nation could be on the verge of propelling a major crisis into an epidemicstratosphere. The 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) willconvene at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.The General Debate will open on Wednesday, 24 September2014. The debate's opening was postponed from Tuesday,23 September 2014, to accommodate the Climate Summit

(resolution A/RES/57/301 and decision 68/512), according tothe U.N.Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who has been widelycriticized for making too many trips during the last eight yearsof her administration, has been equally hailed for staying homein the midst of the spread of the menacing virus which has notonly shut down the nation economically but radically alteredcultural and social norms.Sirleaf pulled out of an invite to attend U.S. President BarackObama summit last month to dedicate more time to the Ebolacrisis, a move hailed by billionaire philanthropist Mo Ibrahim, who said last month during a sideline speaking engagement ofthe White House Summit, that African leaders, making speci creference to President Sirleaf should nd another way ofconnecting with other foreign governments rather than boardingthe next available ight whenever they are sent an invitationto attend a summit or meeting. Because they have a job to doat home and this habit of African leaders running from Beijingto New York then French call them, they go to France; thenthe Japanese call them then they go to he said. You cansit down at home and do your job actually. So I told her; youknow what I suggest to you, a good knowledge for you to getvideo conferencing (laughter) because everybody wants a pieceof you.The summit which took place from August 4-6, was thelargest event any U.S. President has held with African headsof state and government. The summit was trumpeted as gearedtoward highlighting the depth and breadth of the United Statescommitment to the African continent, advanced our shared

priorities, and enabled discussion of concrete ideas to deepenthe partnership. Sirleaf was represented by vice president JoeBoakai.Ibrahim said Presidents Sirleafs decision to cancel her trip tothe all-important summit where at least fourteen African headsof states are attending the three-day summit that is primarily

focusing on trade, investment and security of the continent is the best thing to do in the wake of the Ebola crisis facing Liberia. You sit in your country; sit in Monrovia and just use that anddont travel to those people, he said. So I was very glad thatshe stayed at home to deal with the disaster, there instead ofcoming and having dinner here will not solve the problem forLiberia. President Sirleaf has come under huge criticisms athome for the amount of travels she makes in a year.On Monday, Defense Minister Brownie Samukai told

Rodney D. Sieh, [email protected] that Liberia would be represented at theassembly by he and Ambassador to the US, Jeremiah Sulunteh

but in the last 24 hours, multiple Executive Mansion sourcessay, the President was still 50-50 leaning toward designatingher vice president Joseph Boakai to represent her at the summit. An of cial speaking on condition of anonymity Tuesday saidthe President is still unsure whether she would attend. But some

political observers say, while Sirleaf has been under pressureof late and con ned to Liberia trying to deal with the menacingoutbreak, her presence at the UN could offer a rare chance tomake a strong case for Liberia among the comity of nations. On Monday the WHO projected that the virus is spreadingexponentially as it anticipates thousands of new cases expected

in the next three weeks. At least 2,100 people infected withEbola have died so far in the West African states of Guinea,Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria this year. 1, 246 of thosedeaths took place in Liberia. The WHO says 79 health workershave been killed by the virus. While hailing the presidents decision to spend more time athome to deal with the Ebola crisis, some presidential aides say,her presence at the UN could carry a lot of weight and offer a

platform to make a strong case for more aid to Liberia. While key stakeholders have begun to put their stamp on thecrisis with pledges of support, the WHO has said it will take alot of money to get the virus contain. There are only 570 beds in Ebola treatment centers in Guinea,

Sierra Leone and Liberia, the hardest-hit countries, and theWorld Health Organization says nearly 1,000 more are needed, the vast majority of those in Liberia, which has produced themost deaths of the crisis. This week, the United States and Britain announced plans tosend military personnel to help contain the outbreak, now thelargest on record. It has spread from Guinea to Sierra Leone,Liberia, Nigeria and Senegal and killed more than 2,000 people.Countries hardly-hit by the outbreak are struggling for facilitiesto treat suspected cases. "As soon as a new Ebola treatmentfacility is opened, it immediately lls to over owing with

patients, pointing to a large but previously invisible caseload,"WHO said in a statement about the situation in Liberia, thehardest-hit country. "Many thousands of new cases are expectedin Liberia over the coming three weeks."The U.S. says military personnel will set up a 25-bed eldhospital in Monrovia which will be used to treat health careworkers, a high number of whom have become infected inthis outbreak. Once set up, the center will be turned over tothe Liberian government. The U.S. says it has no plan to staffthe facility with U.S. military personnel."This is not Liberia's

particular ght; it is a ght that the international communitymust engage very, very seriously and bring all possible resourcesto bear," said Information Minister Lewis Brown.Britain however, is planning to open a 62-bed treatment centerin Sierra Leone in the coming weeks. It will be operated bymilitary engineers and medical staff with help from the charitySave the Children, Britain's Department for InternationalDevelopment said Monday. The clinic will also include a

special section for treating health care workers, offering themhigh-quality, specialist care, the statement said. The crisis is also drawing scrutiny on stakeholders with ties tocountries in the thick of the crisis. The French for example have

been deeply involved in trying to contain the virus in Guineawhere it sent 20 specialists in biological disasters to help stopthe spread of Ebola after international health organizationslamented the lack of aid from the West to tackle the epidemic. The move was in response to the WHO call that the virus willnot be brought under control unless wealthy nations dispatchspecialized biological disaster response teams, the head ofcharity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Tuesday. InApril, France sent teams of doctors to the airport of Guinea-Conakry to monitor passengers to Paris for the deadly Ebolavirus.Britain has been heavily involved in Sierra Leone, sendinghumanitarian experts to help Liberias neighbor deal with thecrisis in addition to the 62-bed facility which will be builtand run by military engineers and medical staff. The centre isexpected to be operational within eight weeks. In Liberia, the U.S. which has already sent in tons of suppliesand has pumped in millions of dollars for the construction ofEbola centers across the country.Quietly, some Sirleaf aides say her presence at the UN would be

pivotal. This is why she was elected; why Liberians preferredher over the others because of her international recognitionand connections. This is her crisis and she must deal with it,said a senior administration of cial speaking on condition ofanonymity Tuesday. The platform at the UN could provide herthat, a chance to make one nal case.

qualifying campaign withan encouraging 2-0 winaway to chief Group E rivalsSwitzerland in Basel onMonday.England had been criticised fora lacklustre display in their 1-0friendly victory over Norwaylast week, but with a newmid eld diamond introduced

by manager Roy Hodgson, they put on an improvedshowing at St Jakob-Park.Welbeck was deputising forthe injured Daniel Sturridgeand the new Arsenal strikerrose to the occasion, touchinghome a cross from RaheemSterling in the 58th minuteand then sealing victory instoppage time."I thought the way weapproached the game from the

rst minute was exactly whatwe wanted, and we got ourreward," Hodgson told ITV."We pressurised the ball well,

but you need that rst goal toget people to come out andattack you."From then I thought welooked dangerous and we hadseveral chances to aggravatethe scoreline before DannyWelbeck's second."

It was Switzerland's rstcompetitive home defeatsince a 3-1 loss to England inOctober 2010 and meant thatnew coach Vladimir Petkovic

began his tenure in losingfashion. However, with the top twoteams in the group guaranteedto qualify for the tournament inFrance, it is likely to prove a

esh wound for a side rankedninth in the world after theirrun to the last 16 at the WorldCup."We started the second halfmuch better, with much moremovement and speed, but we

committed two major errorsand conceded a goal," saidPetkovic."It's a good lesson and we'll tryto make up for it in the nextgame."

Facing the team he coachedfor almost four years, Hodgsonused a diamond shape thatsaw Sterling line up behindWelbeck and Wayne Rooney, with Jordan Henderson, JackWilshere and Fabian Delph inmid eld.Delph was making his fulldebut and began brightly,

but he was also booked aftersliding in on Valon Behramiand Stephan Lichtsteiner inquick succession.

    - Sommer thwarts Jones -The system meant that England

always seemed to have optionsin possession, and they beganto carve out chances.Rooney spurned three of them, failing to get a shot away after

    being picked out by Wilshere,

scuf ng an effort at YannSommer from Sterling's pass, and heading over a centre fromLeighton Baines.England also failed to exploita three-on-one situation in the29th minute, with Welbeck

bursting free down the right but failing to pick out eitherSterling or Rooney with his

pass.England goalkeeper Joe Harthad to save with his legsfrom Haris Seferovic afterPhil Jones gifted the ball toXherdan Shaqiri, but it wasonly thanks to Switzerland

goalkeeper Sommer that thescore remained blank at the

break. After turning away a curlingshot from Rooney, the BorussiaMoenchengladbach shot-

stopper produced an excellentsave at the resulting corner,

plunging to his left to palmaway a rm downward headerfrom Jones. An open start to the second halfsaw chances exchanged at bothends.Wilshere drilled wide forEngland and Behrami narrowlyavoided turning Henderson'scross into his own net, whileLichtsteiner shot over and Hart

produced a ne one-handedsave to thwart Seferovic. But it was England who drew

rst blood with a neatly crafted

goal reminiscent of Sturridge'sstrike against Italy at the WorldCup.After breaking from mid eld,Rooney found Sterling on theleft and the Liverpool winger's

low centre was turned in byWelbeck.Switzerland substitute JosipDrmic looked poised to

bring Switzerland level afterskipping around Hart with 20minutes left, but Gary Cahillslid in to thwart him with acrucial goal-line block.Jones was forced off withwhat seemed to be a hamstringinjury, but after Hart caught ade ected Ricardo Rodriguezeffort, substitute RickieLambert released Welbeck to

When it arrived, theyrealized they were the proudowner of a "Flacao" shirt. This was either a mistake orthe player Manchester UnitedCEO Ed Woodward thought
