A healthy school of excellence is not measured by its buildings, its history or its finances. All of those aspects are important, but the heart of a school is crafted by the staff and families that form the community. It is a delicate balance to maintain professional standards and respond to the needs of the community with compassion and trust. When partnering to direct a child’s future, there are countless joys and unimagined risks. Children are evolving in ways we cannot predict yet our systems must be consistent and predictable. One person cannot mandate the heart of a school. With the modeling of staff and parents, the students must, also, adopt the characteristics of a caring community and join the struggle to maintain its balance. When a community fosters quality delivery of services and an approach that is respectful and responsive to all its members, it is a very special place. We have been extraordinarily blessed at TCS to have experienced a renewable strain of heart throughout the years. Every family and staff member who joins our community impacts the heart and soul of what occurs every day. We take a careful look at the resumes of our newly hired staff. But the resume is just a piece of paper. We must take the time to identify the values and spirit of the adult we are introducing into our home base. We know when we enroll families that there has been a history of disappointment and despair. We have to determine if there is room for trust as they blend into our social and professional realm. Over the last twenty-nine years we have been blessed with staff who generously share their talent and their heart with our students, their families and our staff. Regardless of the subject matter they teach or the role they fulfill, their contributions are life changing for all who share time with them. In twenty-nine years we have never had a staff member retire. They either move on or they stay with us for decades. Laura Finnell is our longest staff member. She came to us just out of student teaching 23 years ago! She is closely followed by Allen McAdams, Julie Crudgington, Lyle Cutchin and the list goes on and on. Twenty percent of our full time staff have been with us ten or more years. This WP contains our very first retirement letter from veteran TCS teacher, Phil Parker. Phil and his wife, Anne, have been personal friends for decades. When their daughter Jennifer ran into academic struggles at Roswell High School it seemed only natural to take her under our wings. When Anne joined the work force again, we were thrilled to have her work in our office, eventually moving to our After School Program. When Phil decided that corporate America was not for him, we were delighted to have him join our staff. When Phil joined the Art and Athletic Departments, we scored a home run. His gentle spirit with our students allayed their anxieties and released their own artistic abilities. Phil has consistently shared his highly creative artistic talents with all of us at TCS. His fingerprints (in the form of art work and spirit) are everywhere on campus. He is a mainstay of our Middle School program and a cornerstone of our cross country / track and field program. His art and athletic partners on staff have found a true friend and comrade as together they inspire and encourage our students through the years.

Once Phil decided that the time was right for him to spend more time with his family and to enjoy personal pursuits, we knew we would support him one hundred percent! We wanted him to make his announcement with plenty of time to celebrate all that he is and all that he gives our TCS family. Although we will greatly miss his day to day presence, we know that the foundation he has laid for those who follow him is strong and irresistible. If you wish to participate in honoring Phil on May 4th or contribute to a token of appreciation, please see the Advancement Angle for details. We know Phil will stay connected and we want to take the time to celebrate his awesomeness!

Jacque’s Note

Page 4: Wednesday Packet, April 23, 2014

“A HeART-felt Thanks!

Dear TCS Parents and Students:

After twelve wonderful years of teaching art and coaching at The Cottage School, I have decided

to officially retire. My time here has been a joy and true blessing that I will remember forever.

The main thing I will miss most is simply bringing the joy of art to the minds of the many

Middle School children; to hear them say, “Oh, I get it!” or “Wow, that’s cool”!, and to have a

personal realization that I was able to make a small difference in their lives.

It is time for me to move on to getting more involved with my many creative endeavors, relaxing

with my wonderful wife, Anne, our amazing children, grandchildren, and friends. I will also be

on the TCS sub list, so the students may still see me around now and then.

My immense appreciation goes to Jacque and Joe for not only hiring me but being so supportive

throughout the years. Also to my delightful and courageous principal Julie, who has been so

patient and considerate, to the administrative and teaching staff, the TCS Board of Directors, and

to all TCS parents and guardians who have all worked together to help make working here such a

pleasure. Under such strong and dedicated support and leadership I know that The Cottage

School will continue to grow and prosper. I will miss you all.

Sincerely, and thanks for the great memories!

Phil Parker
