JUDGE RULES NYRA HEARING WITH BAFFERT CAN PROCEEDBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

Round Two of the legal battle between Bob Baffert and the

New York Racing Association was decided Oct. 5 in NYRA's favor in a manner reminiscent of American Pharoah's lopsided victory in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

United States District Court Judge Carol Bagley Amon quickly denied Baffert's civil contempt charges against NYRA, ruling that NYRA did not violate her July 14 order with its announcement last month that it will conduct a disciplinary hearing that could lead to a suspension of the Hall of Fame trainer.

"In order to have a finding of contempt, there needs to be obvious proof of non-compliance with the original ruling and that has not been proven. My ruling bans the enforcement of the May

17 suspension, not its reasoning," Amon said Tuesday in the United States District Court Eastern District of New York courtroom in Brooklyn. "The due process (Baffert) is entitled to is why the suspension was lifted. To create a hearing process does not violate the spirit of that ruling."

The decision paves the way for NYRA to conduct an Oct. 11 pre-hearing scheduling conference with Baffert in front of hearing officer O. Peter Sherwood, a retired New York State Supreme Court Justice, to establish a date for the actual hearing.

"It's disappointing," Baffert's attorney W. Craig Robertson III said about the ruling as he left the courtroom. "We'll see them on Oct. 11 and take it from there."

The contempt charge centered on NYRA's May 17 temporary suspension of Baffert after his Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Medina Spirit failed a post-race drug test.

Baffert's attorneys filed for an injunction to lift the suspension

in federal court and it was granted by Judge Bagley Amon in a July 14 order, citing NYRA's lack of due process for Baffert.

After NYRA established a new set of procedures and protocols for disciplinary hearings, it issued a Sept. 10 announcement of a hearing for Baffert, whose attorneys claimed it violated the spirit of Amon's July ruling.

Shortly after Robertson presented his case Tuesday, claiming NYRA violated "a clear and unambiguous order," Amon began to discredit it.

"I lifted the suspension so (Baffert) can race, which he has, because of a lack of due process," the judge said. "Why do you think that would preclude a hearing? It was not implicit in the court decision that there could not be a hearing. I said your client was due a chance to present his side of the case and answer questions. The hearing is a whole new proceeding."

NYRA’s focus in this matter is protecting the integrity of the sport of Thoroughbred racing in accordance with the

requirements of due process.”

In presenting NYRA's side, attorney Henry M. Greenberg argued NYRA was giving Baffert what he sought in the July court case by providing him with a hearing.

"NYRA is providing exactly what (Baffert) wanted and what he argued he was entitled to. We took every word and syllable of the order as a guide to establish a process in which he can tell his side to a hearing officer," Greenberg said. "It is clear (Baffert's attorneys) did not meet their burden of proof. A contempt proceeding is not the proper way to challenge the hearing. He will be given a punctilious hearing."

Following Amon's decision on Tuesday, NYRA senior director of communications Pat McKenna said, "We are gratified by the court's decision allowing NYRA to move forward with its administrative hearing against Bob Baffert. The court found that NYRA's actions were consistent with both the letter and spirit of the July 14 order. NYRA's focus in this matter is protecting the integrity of the sport of Thoroughbred racing in accordance with the requirements of due process."

Unlike the July hearing, Baffert was not present for Tuesday's proceedings.

Since Baffert's suspension was lifted by Amon, the California-based trainer has made seven starts at NYRA tracks, six at Saratoga Race Course and one at Belmont Park. He won the Aug. 28 Ketel One Ballerina Handicap (G1) at Saratoga with Gamine and an Oct. 3 maiden special weight race with Fenway at Belmont Park.

NYRA announced its May 17 temporary suspension of Baffert due to five drug violations in the previous year and "other related information."

The court case arose after Zedan Racing Stables' Medina Spirit gave Baffert his record-breaking seventh Kentucky Derby victory May 1. Eight days later it was

revealed that the colt's post-race drug test indicated the presence of betamethasone, a corticosteroid banned on race days in Kentucky. A split sample confirmed the original finding.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is awaiting the results of a third test from a lab chosen by the connections of Medina Spirit before it issues a final ruling and determines whether there should be any change to the order of Derby finish or a suspension for Baffert. BH

F-T MIDLANTIC FALL YEARLINGS

F-T MIDLANTIC FALL YEARLINGS SALE CONTINUES RISEBy Lauren Gasht @BH_LGash

After two days of selling at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md., the Fasig-Tipton

Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale closed Oct. 5 with marked improvement across the board from last year's results and two colts by Ashford Stud's young sire Mendelssohn claiming the top prices of the sale.

From the 456 yearlings offered over the sale's two days, 381 yearlings sold for gross receipts of $11,269,400, an average price of $29,578, and a $20,000 median price. The 75 yearlings that went unsold represented an RNA rate of 16.4%.

During 2020, a year when much of the nation was under operating under restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 379 yearlings sold from 484 offered over two days for gross sales of $9,120,700, an average of $24,065, and a median of $14,000. Last year's RNA rate was 21.7% after 105 yearlings did not meet their reserve.

This year, the number of six-figure transactions was 16, up from 2020 when 11 sold for $100,000 or more.

During Tuesday's session, which saw Hips 201-514 go through the ring, 232 yearlings sold from 278 offered for gross receipts of $6,692,100, an average of

$28,845, and a median of $20,000. The 46 hips that went unsold represented an RNA rate of 16.5%.

At the second session in 2020, 257 head sold from from 322 offered for a gross of $6,137,100, an average of $23,880, and a median of $13,000. From the 65 that went unsold, the RNA rate was 20.2%.

The yearling marketplace, as the calendar approaches the end of its year, continues with a vibrant buoyancy.

"Great crowd and support from both buyers and consignors, breeders, and owners," Paget Bennett, sales director for Fasig-Tipton Midlantic, said. "They brought great horses to the marketplace and were rewarded, making it especially gratifying for our regional clients, which helps prove the market can support this niche sale."

F-T MIDLANTIC FALL YEARLINGS

The sale topper was a colt from the first crop of Mendelssohn purchased by Scanlon Training and Sales for $235,000 from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent, on Tuesday. The colt, Hip 415, is out of the unraced Malibu Moon mare Grace Is Gone, a daughter of Grace Anatomy, who placed in the 2007 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1), and a half sister to stakes-placed Retro. The colt's fourth dam is 1990 Yellow Ribbon Invitational Stakes (G1T) winner Plenty of Grace, a half sister to 1999 champion grass mare and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) heroine Soaring Softly.

The chestnut colt was initially purchased by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds, with Wade as agent, from the Four Star Sales consignment at the 2020 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $100,000. He was bred in Kentucky by Marcus Stables.

Scanlon also purchased Hip 17, an Uncle Lino filly that is the first foal out of the Quality Road mare Meadow Gem, on the first day of the sale for $30,000. The filly, named Auntie Emma, was consigned by Bill Reightler, agent for Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence M. Smith, who bred the filly in Pennsylvania. She is also Delaware certified. The filly's fourth dam is multiple grade 1 winner Educated Risk.

The second-highest price at the sale came on the first day when Oracle Bloodstock's Conor Foley went to

$230,000 for the Mendelssohn colt out of the Malibu Moon mare Tasha's Moon. The colt was consigned as Hip 189 by Dreamtime Stables, agent.

Over the sale's two days, three yearlings by Mendelssohn from four offered sold for combined sales of $625,000, averaging $208,333. On the first day, Northview also sold a Mendelssohn filly (Hip 159)

for $160,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for Caroline and Greg Bentley.

"It's gratifying and thrilling to watch people get rewarded for raising these nice horses and bringing them to the Maryland marketplace," Bennett said. "We had some new buyers this year, Conor Foley of Oracle Bloodstock and Susan Montanye of SBM Training and Sales."

The two days of selling saw many pinhookers looking for prospects for next year's 2-year-old sales.

"We always get great support from the

pinhookers. They usually can find good horses for decent money, and they get rewarded at the 2-year-old sales to make a good profit," said Bennett.

"Year after year, they come back, and every year there are one or two more that come."

While the yearling sales marketplace is nearing its close for this calendar year, Fasig-Tipton still has its Kentucky October Yearlings Sale on Oct. 25-28.

"Fasig-Tipton October is going to be wild with all of the momentum that is flowing in the marketplace, and there are still people that haven't been able to get horses. It's going to continue in Kentucky," Bennett said. BH

FASIG-TIPTON KY OCTOBER YEARLINGS

FASIG-TIPTON KENTUCKY OCTOBER YEARLINGS CATALOG ONLINEBy BloodHorse Staff

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 1,586 yearlings for its Kentucky October Yearlings Sale on

Oct. 25-28 in Lexington. The four continuous sessions, conducted Monday through Thursday, will begin each day at 10 a.m. ET.

"Kentucky October has developed into one of the most important yearling sales on the calendar," said Fasig-Tipton president and CEO Boyd Browning Jr. "This year's catalog is outstanding, with every current top 25 ranked sire represented by multiple yearlings. Buyers will find tremendous quality no matter what their budget."

Sale graduates continue to have success at the highest levels, notching nearly 200 stakes wins or placings in 2021. These include current stars Hot Rod Charlie, winner of the Sept. 25 Pennsylvania Derby (G1) at Parx Racing, and undefeated 2-year-old colt Jack Christopher, who captured the Oct. 2 Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.

The final stop on the North American yearling sales tour, the sale has expanded to four selling sessions

in recent years to help accommodate the increase in market demand. It is nationally a top-ranked yearling sale by percentage of grade 1 winners and graded stakes winners sold.

The catalog may now be viewed online, and will also be available via the equineline sales catalog app. Print catalogs will be available on-site during sales week in Lexington.

Online bidding and phone bidding services will be available. BH

KEENELAND NOVEMBER

KEENELAND RELEASES CATALOG FOR NOVEMBER SALEBy BloodHorse Staff

The 78th Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale will offer 3,594 horses in the breeding stock and

weanling portion of the sale to be held Nov. 10-19 in Lexington. The catalog is now available online and print catalogs will be mailed around Oct. 15.

The sale will offer 2,159 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 1,432 weanlings, and three stallions or stallion prospects. This year's November sale will also offer a single session dedicated to horses of racing age that will take place the final day—immediately following 148 cataloged head of breeding stock. Because Keeneland extended the entry deadline for the racehorse segment until Oct. 4, information about the offerings will be posted online in mid-October and appear in a separate print catalog available on the grounds.

Keeneland will continue to accept supplements to Book 1 of the November sale and to the horses of racing age portion until the auction begins.

"The Keeneland November sale is unmatched globally in terms of scale and quality, and the anticipation for the sale is building," Keeneland vice president of sales Tony Lacy said. "Buyers will find proven producers, coveted broodmare prospects who were successful racehorses, and royally bred

weanlings at all levels of the market, particularly in the prestigious Book 1. And the reimagined horses of racing age segment ensures the excitement and opportunity continue through the final sale day."

"The atmosphere at Keeneland for the September sale was electric from start to finish," Keeneland president and CEO Shannon Arvin said. "We look forward to setting the stage with similar fantastic energy for the breeding stock sale this November."

For the November sale, Keeneland once again will offer online and phone bidding to accommodate buyers who cannot attend.

The November sale will span 10 days and kick off with Book 1 on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The opening session will begin at 1 p.m. ET with a total of 221 horses cataloged.

All remaining sessions will begin at 10 a.m., with Books 2-5 scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 11 through Friday, Nov. 19.

KEENELAND NOVEMBER SALE TO OFFER DRAFT OF WESTS' MARESBy BloodHorse Staff

Keeneland has announced that the 2021 November Breeding Stock Sale, from Nov. 10-19, will mark

the start of an annual reduction of broodmares from prominent owners and breeders Gary and Mary West during the auction. Paramount Sales will serve as agent for the consignment, which this year will catalog 31 broodmares and broodmare prospects with broodmares in foal to Hard Spun, Union Rags, and The Factor, as well as to the Wests' champions Game Winner, Maximum Security, and West Coast and grade 3 winner and grade 1-placed American Freedom.

As the Wests' colts and their Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner New Year's Day were retired to stud, the couple acquired a large number of mares specifically to breed to them.

"We just can't keep them all," Ben Glass, the

Wests' racing manager, said about the mares. "It's amazing how quickly we accumulated broodmares. We're up to 100, and we only try to have 50-60. You just have to move those mares down the line. It's a tough decision. For all we know, we're selling the dam of another grade 1 winner."

The mares cataloged as part of the Wests' annual reduction represent a diversity of bloodlines, providing breeders with a variety of options for future matings. Included among the sires of their mares are prominent stallions and/or top broodmare sires Candy Ride, Curlin, Distorted Humor, Giant's Causeway, Into Mischief, Macho Uno, Medaglia d'Oro, Mineshaft, Quality Road, Smart Strike, Speightstown, Storm Cat, Street Cry, and Uncle Mo.

The Wests have been longtime patrons of Keeneland sales.

They purchased Maximum Security's sire, New Year's Day, at Keeneland's 2012 September Yearling Sale. They purchased the champion's dam, Lil Indy, in foal to Pioneerof the Nile at the 2014 January

Horses of All Ages Sale and resold her carrying a full sister to Maximum Security at the 2018 November Sale.

The Wests also acquired American Freedom, Game Winner, and West Coast at the September sale, along with Dream Lady, who produced their Central Bank Ashland (G1) dead-heat winner Room Service.

Glass said the choice of the November Sale as the venue for the Wests' annual reduction of broodmares stemmed from their working relationship with Keeneland and the sales company's broad international buying base.

"We have a good working relationship with Keeneland," Glass said. "They have

always done a good job for us. There is a buyer there for every mare."

While each mare cataloged to this year's November sale has a lot to offer, Paramount's Pat Costello said several have attributes that will attract enhanced attention from buyers:

• Sweet Sweet Annie (Hip 684), a 6-year-old mare by Curlin produced from multiple stakes winner Song for Annie and in foal to West Coast, is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Successful Song.

• Applaud (Hip 751), a 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro also is in foal to West Coast.

• Media Circus (Hip 948), a 3-year-old by Mineshaft, descends from the female family of grade 1 winner and sire Tapizar.

"Sweet Sweet Annie is a fine mare with good size and is from a hell of a family," Costello said. "Applaud is a lovely individual from a real deep family that goes back to Hold That Tiger and Editor's Note. Media Circus is also another nice mare, and she is from the family of Tapizar."

Costello reiterated that the Wests are trying to trim their numbers with the reduction.

"They can't keep them all." Costello said. "They have a tremendous broodmare band and have fillies they race coming off the track and adding to it."

"The Wests are passionate Thoroughbred owners and breeders, who have been very loyal patrons of Keeneland and have realized some of their greatest triumphs in racing thanks to horses they acquired here," Keeneland vice president of sales Tony Lacy said. "We are grateful for the opportunity to annually offer mares from such a successful operation as an added attraction of the November sale." BH

SAUDI CUP ELEVATED TO GROUP 1 STATUSBy BloodHorse Staff

The organization responsible for managing the graded/group status of internationally recognized

races promoted Saudi Arabia to Part II status and made the Saudi Cup a group 1 race, according to an announcement from the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

The International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee's changes were shared during an Oct. 4 meeting of the IFHA executive council meeting.

While the group status of races under Part II rules are considered "for information only" and not recognized internationally, specific races can be elevated to Part I status and earn international recognition. Such was the case with the $20 million Saudi Cup, which had its inaugural running in 2020, and now will carry group 1 status for its running next year Feb. 26 at King Abdulaziz Racetrack. The 1,800-meter (1 1/8-mile) race was first won by Maximum Security and won earlier this year by Mishriff.

Other races on the Saudi Cup undercard were elevated to group 3 status, too: the $1 million Neom Turf Cup, a 2,100-meter (about 1 5/16-mile) race on turf; the $1 million 1351 Turf Sprint Sponsored by STC, a 1,351-meter (nearly seven-furlong) turf race; the $1.5 million Saudi Derby Sponsored by Al Rajhi Bank, a 1,600-meter (one-mile) dirt race; the $1.5 million Riyadh Dirt Sprint Sponsored by Saudi Arabian Airlines at 1,200 meters (six furlongs); and, the $2.5 million Red Sea Turf at 3,000 meters (1 7/8 miles) on turf.

The IRPAC also promoted Bahrain to Part II status, which means its Al Methaq Cup, His Majesty the King's Cup, and His Royal Crown Prince Cup will be recognized internationally as black-type stakes. The country's Bahrain International Trophy (G3) also was

elevated to internationally recognized group 3 status. The IFHA meeting was led by its new chair

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, who succeeded Louis Romanet. Romanet had served as the federation's chair since its founding in 1994 and now serves as chairman emeritus. The meeting also marked the commencement of three-year terms for Jim Gagliano, Brian Kavanagh, Masayuki Goto, and Horacio Esposito as vice-chairs.

Other business conducted by the executive council included:

• Approving executive council appointments for Bruce Sherwin, director of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, and Dr. Paull Khan, secretary-general of the European and Mediterranean Horseracing Federation, as rotating members representing "developing racing countries."

• Endorsed the chair and nominations to its Finance Committee—Jim Lawson with Woodbine is the chair, and committee members include Oscar Bertoletti, CEO of Organización Sudamericana de Fomento; Olivier Delloye, CEO of France Galop; Suzanne Eade, chief executive for Horse Racing Ireland; and Greg Nichols, director of racing Australia

• A Governance Committee will be chaired by Julie Harrington, British Horseracing Authority chief executive and committee members announced later,

• Delloye will chair a new Commercial and Marketing Committee, with its committee members to be named later, and

• Andrew Harding will continue as executive director for the IFHA executive office and will be joined by directors Andrew Chesser, manager of

registration services for The Jockey Club (USA) and previously secretary general for the IFHA; James Ogilvy, executive manager, international and racing regulation at The Hong Kong Jockey Club and previously technical adviser for the IFHA; and Henri Pouret, managing director, racing operations for France Galop. THIRD-QUARTER HANDLE 10.2% AHEAD OF PRE-PANDEMIC 2019By Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Wagering in the U.S. fell more than 12.3% during September to contribute to a 2% third-quarter

slide this year, but wagering remains up sharply relative to pre-pandemic figures from 2019, according to data supplied Oct. 5 by Equibase.

Compared to two years ago, betting during the most recent quarter climbed 10.2% from about $2.9 billion to $3.2 billion.

Last year, the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) and other major races from Churchill Downs were contested in early September after COVID-19 forced the postponement of the race from its customary placement in early May. The Derby Day program and Kentucky Oaks Day card are two of the most popular cards with bettors each year and spiked betting during the third quarter of 2020.

Other tracks also repositioned stakes and major events amid a shuffled stakes calendar last year.

Purses, bolstered by gaming revenue in some jurisdictions, rose to nearly $365.4 million this past quarter, a 4.4% climb relative to 2019. But average starters per race, a key metric for horseplayers who prefer large fields and competitive racing, dropped 3.4% to 7.03 horses per race. That average was 7.28 in 2019 and 7.65 during the third quarter of 2020 during a resumption of racing after COVID-19 shutdowns in the spring.

Year-to-date handle at nearly $9.5 billion in 2021 puts betting 10.5% ahead of 2019's $8.6 billion. BH

ARIZONA SISTER TOPS TATTERSALLS OCTOBER BOOK 1 OPENERBy James Thomas/Racing Post

The German bloodstock industry is still basking in the glory of Torquator Tasso's stunning Qatar

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) strike, and another of the country's leading practitioners had cause for celebration at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale on Tuesday as Philipp Stauffenberg topped the opening session with Lot 110, a sister to Arizona at 825,000 guineas (US$1,176,600).

The daughter of No Nay Never was making her second appearance at public auction, having been pinhooked by Stauffenberg for €260,000 ($318,597) at Goffs last December, and after early interest from the likes of Ross Doyle and James Horton, matters boiled down to a straight duel between rival camps from Cheveley Park Stud and Juddmonte Farms.

With owner Patricia Thompson in attendance, it was Cheveley Park Stud's long-serving managing director Chris Richardson who struck the decisive blow after a lengthy exchange of six-figure bids.

"She was the one we really wanted," said Thompson. "She's a beautiful filly. We were looking for a filly for the broodmare band and she was first on the shortlist. We will get her broken in and make some plans."

Stauffenberg is no stranger to making his punchy pinhooks pay, but Tuesday's result comfortably eclipsed his previous best at Book 1, which came 12 months ago when he sold a Wootton Bassett colt to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 600,000 guineas ($811,082).

"I haven't calculated the profit but that's the best result we've ever had in the ring," said Stauffenberg. "She's not a big girl, but she's beautiful. She has size, strength, and a wonderful temperament, I just adore her.

"She was a very good physical as a foal and on top of that she's an outcross

for most of the big owner-breeders, and as you saw we ended up with Cheveley Park bidding against Juddmonte.

"Hopefully she will be worth what Cheveley Park has spent on her. It's great to see Mrs. Thompson go on investing in a filly like this for the future. That's very encouraging for the British industry."

The filly was bred by Stephen Sullivan and is the fifth foal out of Lady Ederle, a placed daughter of English Channel who hails from the family of Dabirsim. As well as producing Coventry Stakes (G2) winner Arizona, who joined the Coolmore stallion roster in 2021, Lady Ederle is also dam of the grade 2-winning Nay Lady Nay.

Juddmonte Looking to FutureIt did not take long for Juddmonte to atone for the

earlier reversal as just a few lots later the buying team, headed by general manager Simon Mockridge, landed a winning bid of 800,000 guineas ($1,140,940) for the Dubawi filly (Lot 127) out of Longina consigned by Newsells Park Stud.

"The No Nay Never was a beautiful filly and we went strong on her, but not strong enough," said Mockridge. "But isn't it wonderful to see Mrs. Thompson here buying a filly like that?

"The Dubawi is a very, very nice filly too. Then as a Dubawi she's a great outcross for our stallions down the line. She's a great, free-moving filly and she showed very well."

The filly's pedigree was also the product of the German breeding industry, being out of a daughter of Monsun who won the Diana Trial (G2) for Gestut Ittlingen. In turn, Longina is out of German champion 2-year-old Love Academy, while the page traces back to the likes of Lando and Laccario.

With Juddmonte having lost its founder, Khalid Abdullah, in January there had been some uncertainty over the future direction of the operation. However, Mockridge offered a positive update as he noted that the pursuit of blue-blooded fillies illustrated the Abdullah family's commitment to maintaining the

Juddmonte empire."The positive news is that Prince Khalid's

family wishes to continue to develop Juddmonte so we need to buy some outcross fillies," he said. "That's the reason why we're here. These two fillies fit the bill, but fillies like this are very rare and you have to be competitive.

"It's been a tough year losing Prince Khalid but the family is committed to the stud and to the future. The Prince left a great legacy and we have a great stallion base. Now it's up to us to continue it."

Godolphin's Statement of IntentGodolphin made a big statement of intent during

the early exchanges on Tuesday as, with Sheikh Mohammed himself at Park Paddocks, the operation secured the very first lot into the ring, a Kingman colt (Lot 1) from Chasemore Farm, at 525,000 guineas ($748,743).

That six-figure purchase was supplemented a short while later with the acquisition of a Lope de Vega colt (Lot 49) from Whatton Manor Stud at a cost of 725,000 guineas ($1,033,980).

The son of Lope de Vega was bred by St Albans Bloodstock and is the first foal out of God Given, a Nathaniel half sister to Postponed who provided Luca Cumani with his final group 1 winner when landing the Premio Lydia Tesio Sisal Matchpoint (G1).

"He moved extremely well, he's very light on his feet, and he behaved very well here," said Godolphin's chief talent scout Anthony Stroud. "He's out of a very good mare from the family of Postponed, whom we know well, and we like Lope de Vega very much."

The result was a personal best for Nottinghamshire-based Whatton Manor, whose Ed Player said, "I'm delighted to have horses nice enough to come to Book 1, we've always aspired to sell here. We're extremely lucky that Andrew Stone of St Albans Bloodstock trusted us with God Given. We had Bianca Nera (God Given's granddam) on the farm a long time ago so it's come full circle.

"I'm absolutely delighted with the price, I could not be happier as it's the most we've ever sold one for. We once sold a Cadeaux Genereux for 650,000 guineas but that was before my time. God Given has a Dubawi colt foal and she's back in foal to Siyouni. The team has done a tremendous job prepping him and they've shown him beautifully here."

Another operation toasting its best result was Andrew Black's Chasemore Farm, who saw Stroud secure the Kingman colt out of the listed-winning Eartha Kitt who brought the curtain up on the blue-chip sale.

"Being the first lot in the ring can be a bit of a poisoned chalice but it was a great result," said Chasemore's farm manager Jack Conroy. "We had a number in our heads that we thought we could realistically get, but after showing for a few days you pick up on the vibe that the right people are interested and that price was well past the figure we'd expected.

"That's the best result we've ever had. We broke our record last year with a lovely Shalaa colt who made 290,000 guineas ($392,013, to Blandford Bloodstock). He was by the right stallion though, it was a great result and he's gone to a great home. The mare is in foal to Camelot, although she doesn't have a foal

at foot, and Tom Dascombe has the Frankel 2-year-old."

Conroy added of the six-figure Kingman colt, "Since he got to the sales he's really manned up and has

shown magnificently. We also have a lovely Farhh colt (Lot 568) coming up in Book 2 who's out of Formidable Kitt (half sister to Eartha Kitt), he's the standout of our draft so hopefully, the family will have a good week next week too."

Eartha Kitt is out of Ceiling Kitty, who carried Black's colors to victory in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot.

Magnier's Hat-TrickGodolphin's arch rivals Coolmore were also in

action and collected three lots, two colts and a filly, by the late, great Galileo at a combined spend of 1,875,000 guineas ($2,674,080). The first, the half brother to Godolphin's Queen's Vase (G2) winner Kemari, was consigned by the Cumani family's Fittocks Stud and fetched 600,000 guineas ($855,706).

The youngster (Lot 101) is out of Koora, a Pivotal half sister to Rothmans Royals St. Leger (G1) hero Milan, meaning the colt is bred on the same cross as six group 1 winners, including the likes of Hermosa, Hydrangea, Love, and Magical.

"He's an exceptional colt out of a very good mare who's started her breeding career off very well," said Luca Cumani. "In today's market it's a good price.

Koora has a Kingman filly foal, unfortunately she didn't get in foal to Wootton Bassett but hopefully, she'll be going to Frankel next year."

Magnier also went to 650,000 guineas ($927,015) for the Galileo colt (Lot 121) out of the dual One Thousand Guineas (G1)-placed Lightning Thunder, who was bred by Christopher Hanbury and sold through New England Stud, and completed his hat-trick with the acquisition of Lot 155, the filly out of QIPCO One Thousand Guineas (G1) winner Miss France at 625,000 guineas ($891,360).

The filly out of Miss France was offered by The Castlebridge Consignment and bred by the Wildensteins' Dayton Investments.

The opening session of the three-day auction generated turnover of 25,201,000 guineas ($35,941,100), a 9% year-on-year dip from 2020's corresponding session. The average also slipped by 6% to 210,008 guineas ($299,508), but the consistent, rather than spectacular, nature of trade saw the median rise by 27% to 152,500 guineas ($217,492).

BANGKOK TO STAND AT CHAPEL STUD AS DUAL-PURPOSE SIREBy Kitty Trice/Racing Post

Dual group winner Bangkok will be the first son of Australia to stand at stud in Britain after Chapel Stud

announced the capture of the Sky Bet York Stakes (G2) winner as a dual-purpose recruit.

Bangkok, who won or placed in eight stakes races, was placed at 2 before defeating Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes (G2) winner Telecaster on his first start at 3. He went on to win Sandown's bet365 Classic Trial (G3) before running in the Investec Derby (G1) and placing in the King Edward VII Stakes (G2) and Sky Bet & Symphony Group Strensall Stakes (G3) later that season.

Trained by Andrew Balding for King Power Racing, the 5-year-old was also a dual listed winner on the all-weather before his group 2 success this year, beating Juan Elcano, Mohaafeth, and Armory at York. He retires with six wins from 24 starts and £628,696 in prize money.

A 500,000 guineas (US$695,048) yearling when selling to SackvilleDonald from Barronstown Stud at Tattersalls Book 1, he is out of the stakes-placed Darshaan mare Tanaghum and is a half brother to Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) winner Matterhorn, At the Races Curragh Cup (G3) victor Tactic, and Mujarah, the dam of European champion miler and promising first-season sire Ribchester.

Standing alongside Planteur, the sire of this season's Qatar Prix du Cadran (G1) and Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup (G1) hero Trueshan, on behalf of owner-breeder Simon Davies, the deal was brokered by Billy Jackson-Stops of JS Bloodstock Consultancy.

Chapel Stud director Roisin Close said: "I am delighted to be standing Bangkok on behalf of Simon Davies. He's an exciting addition to both Chapel Stud and the British stallion ranks. Bangkok was a high-class, tough, and consistent multiple stakes winner, and had an excellent career over four seasons.

"He is undeniably attractive with great presence and conformation, all backed up by an outstanding pedigree. He really is the complete package."

Davies said: "We're extremely excited to add Bangkok to stand alongside Planteur at Chapel Stud. He was an

immensely tough and sound racehorse and, as the only son of Australia to stand in Britain, will complement Planteur perfectly and give breeders another quality option next year."

Balding, who might have taken Bangkok back to Bahrain for their big international race next month but for the setback, said: "Bangkok has been a pleasure to train for the last four seasons. His class has enabled him to achieve results at a variety of distances and his courage and constitution are second to none.

"He has the ability, looks, and temperament to be a top-class performer at stud, and we will certainly be supporting him with mares."

Alastair Donald, King Power Racing's manager, said: "He had a heart like a lion, and was a beautiful athlete with a wonderful pedigree, all great qualities for him to be a successful stallion."

Jackson-Stops added: "Bangkok's a superb individual and it's clear to see why he made 500,000 guineas as a yearling. He's been the epitome of soundness, with 24 starts to his name, and his will to win was never more obvious than when getting the head bob to win the York Stakes.

"With his athleticism, competitiveness, and outstanding pedigree, he's sure to be a huge success at stud."

Bangkok's stud fee and terms will be set at a later date. For more European racing, sales, and bloodstock

WELD PROUD OF TARNAWA'S ARC; BC TURF DEFENSE POSSIBLEBy Jonathan Harding/Racing Post

Dermot Weld believes Tarnawa would have won the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) had the

rain stayed away this past weekend at ParisLongchamp but was bursting with pride at the way the runner-up battled on heavy ground.

The 5-year-old, who was a big market drifter, had every chance in the final furlong but could not match shock-winner Torquator Tasso, who scored by three-quarters of a length.

There were no obvious signs of dejection from the trainer in the packed parade ring, only a glimmer of regret that his stable star arrived in peak condition but could not quite show her very best.

"She ran a super race and battled well," said Weld, fully aware of the thin line between triumph and disaster. "She was in tremendous order coming here and got a great ride from Christophe (Soumillon).

"She tried hard and we've got no excuses but you saw the stamina of Tarnawa, not the speed, which was nullified on the testing ground. If we hadn't had so much rain on Saturday night, we'd have won.

"I started to worry as soon as the rain came. She's got a lot of pace, which you saw when she won at the Breeders' Cup last season and in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1), but she just couldn't quicken today—she handles soft but didn't have the speed on that gluey ground."

Weld has won big races all over the world since he began training in 1972 and was philosophical after coming so close to winning his first Arc, adding: "It's a tough game and these are the knocks you take."

Soumillon, who took over from regular rider Colin Keane as the Aga Khan's retained rider in France, agreed with the trainer and said Tarnawa would have been

the "lead actor" on slightly better ground."I'm not disappointed because she's run a fantastic

race and we have nothing to be ashamed of," he said. "The winner had half a length or three-quarters of a length on me all the way up the straight. If we'd been beaten a nose you might think you were unlucky and I would have been disgusted but the ground was sadly just a little too sticky.

"I had a wonderful trip and she broke well, which I had been a little bit worried about. I had a dream run and pulled her out with 400 meters to go but as soon as I saw the German silks I knew it would be tough. I'm delighted with Tarnawa—Dermot and his team have done an unbelievable job getting her here after two runs this year.

"I hope she has the chance to win another good race abroad. She's a superstar and being second in the Arc is nothing to be ashamed of. I think on slightly better ground she would have been the lead actor."

Tarnawa may not have to wait long to take center stage. Weld said a return to the U.S. was a "definite possibility" next month and she was cut to 7-2 (from 11-4) to win her second Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T). This year's Breeders' Cup is at Del Mar.

STORM CAT INBREEDING REFLECTED IN MAJOR 2YO WINNERSBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

About a decade before I moved to the U.S., I made my first trip to Kentucky around the

time of the 1987 Keeneland July Sale. On that trip I had the opportunity to visit a number of farms, one of which was Overbrook, where I saw Storm Cat, who had not long been taken out of training, and would begin covering mares the next year. At that point, his victory in the Young America Stakes (G1) and close second to Tasso in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) were a long way in the rearview mirror as far as breeders were concerned, and it was hard to imagine that Storm Cat would eventually become the world's most expensive stallion. I was reminded of this, and the rapid passage of time, at the weekend when a trio of major juvenile winners presented pedigrees with Storm Cat inbreeding.

Making only her second career start in the Oct. 1 Chandelier Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park, Ain't Easy cruised to victory. She's a daughter of Into Mischief, who is currently in hot-pursuit of Gun Runner as he seeks to achieve a fourth straight leading sire of

2-year-olds title (he's already well on course for a third straight leading sire crown).

Ain't Easy is out of Australian-bred Ameristralia, an Australian group-placed daughter of top sire, Fastnet Rock (by Danehill), and a sister to Fiano Romano,

twice a graded winner in Japan. Her dam, the Cicada Stakes (G3) and Adena Stallions' Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) victress, Heart Ashley, was purchased by Australian interests for $500,000 from Eaton Sales, agent, at the 2010 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. A daughter of Lion Heart, she's three-quarter sister to Railbird Stakes (G3) scorer, Ashley's Kitty (by Lion Heart's sire, Tale of the Cat), and a half sister to Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) winner Cupid.

Ain't Easy's pedigree pattern is an extremely complex one. She is inbred 4x5 to Storm Cat, and in addition has Storm Cat's close related, Royal Academy in the

fourth generation (Storm Cat was by Storm Bird out of a daughter of the mare Crimson Saint; Royal Academy is by Nijinsky II, a Northern Dancer with a similar background to Storm Bird and out of Crimson Saint). Storm Cat is a Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross (he's out one of Secretariat's best daughters, Terlingua), and Ain't Easy's fourth dam, Charge d'Affaires, is by Vice Regent out of a Secretariat mare, so another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross. Finally, in the third generation of the pedigree we have Into Mischief's broodmare sire, Tricky Creek, along with the previously mentioned Danehill. Tricky Creek is by a son of Icecapade (a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer) out of a mare by His Majesty, and Danehill is by a son of Northern Dancer out of a mare by His Majesty. We can note that Into Mischief and Danehill also combine in the pedigree of Mandaloun, who may well end up as his sire's second straight Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner.

On the Oct. 2 Belmont Park card, Jack Christopher, like Ain't Easy making only his second lifetime outing, delivered a powerful display to take the Champagne Stakes (G1). He is the first juvenile grade 1 winner, and

the fourth at the top level, for his sire, Munnings, a son of Speightstown, and a horse who has been steadily working his way towards the higher rungs of the ladder of commercial sires.

Jack Christopher's dam, Rushin No Blushin, is a daughter of the Unbridled's Song horse, Half Ours. She is half sister to the two-time grade 1-winning sprinter and successful sire, Street Boss, and three-quarters sister to the graded-placed Unbridled's Song mare, Habiboo, the dam of Comely Stakes (G3) scorer Bellera, and granddam of the Regret Stakes (G3T) winner Beyond Blame. The granddam, Blushing Ogygian, as her name suggests is by Ogygian—a brilliant but unsound dirt miler—out of a daughter of Blushing Groom, the French black-type placed Fruhlingshochzeit. The fourth dam, Fruhlingstag, was runner-up in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas, G1), and was by the German stallion, Orsini II, from a Marcel Boussac family.

Here, the double of Storm Cat comes through the dams of Speightstown and Half Ours, who are both Mr. Prospector/Storm Cat crosses. The pedigree also has a considerable build-up of Tartan/Genter strains, notably Rough 'n Tumble, Intentionally, Aspidistra, and Cequillo, through Munning's

broodmare sire, Holy Bull; Unbridled, the sire of Unbridled'Song; and Ogygian.

Finally, Gun Runner stretched out his lead over Into Mischief Oct. 3, when his daughter Echo Zulu put up a brilliant performance to capture Belmont's Frizette Stakes (G1) by 7 1/4 lengths. This was her third win in three starts, and she previously captured the Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

Echo Zulu's dam, Letgomyecho (by Menifee), started just four times, but won the first three of those, including the Stonerside Forward Gal Stakes (G2). She's been a very successful producer, as she's dam of four other black-type horses, including the H. Allen Jerkens Stakes Presented by Runhappy (G1) victor Echo Town, and J Boys Echo, successful in the Gotham Stakes (G3). This is a family that has been a lively one recently, as Letgomyecho's stakes-winning half sister, Soundwave, is dam of Dean Martini, who took the Ohio Derby (G3) last year, and another half sister, Echo Harbor, produced the Sapling Stakes (G3) winner Western Smoke and the Santa Anita Derby (G1) second One Lucky Dane.

Echo Zulu's second dam, Echo Echo Echo, is a stakes-placed granddaughter of the stakes-placed Tatallah. That mare only produced only one stakes winner, the Del Mar Junior Miss scorer, Joi'ski, but she's granddam of Engine One, who took the Vosburgh Stakes (G1), and ancestress of numerous other good winners in the U.S., Europe, South America, and Japan,

including other U.S. grade 1 winners Singletary, Pool Play, and Voodoo Dancer. The family goes back through Tatallah's dam, champion 2-year-old female Leallah, to the notable tap-root mare, Oval. The branch which descends from Leallah's granddam, Colosseum, has produced any number of notable performers, among them champion grass horse Manila, champion 2-year-old filly Champagne Room, Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) heroine Blue Prize, St Nicholas Abbey, who took the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T), champion french 2-year-old Targowice, Prix de Diane Hermes (French Oaks, G1) winner Lacovia, White Muzzle, successful in the Italian Derby (G1), and major sires Miswaki and Southern Halo.

Echo Zulu is inbred to Storm Cat through Giant's Causeway, the broodmare sire of Gun Runner, and through Harlan, the sire of Menifee, with both Giant's Causeway and Menifee being extended Storm Cat/Nasrullah crosses. Remarkably, all five of Gun Runner's stakes winners to date feature a double of Storm Cat, and the Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner Gunite and Kip Deville Stakes scorer, Concept, are inbred to Giant's Causeway.
