The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. If these levels are low, symptoms of hypothyroidism will be exacerbated.

What causes low thyroid hormone production? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of T3, your active thyroid hormone. High cortisol levels

(stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause.

According to Ambleside optometrist Dr. Bart McRoberts, who has been in practice for 40 years on the North Shore, the key to optimal eye health is early detection of Sight Threatening Diseases.

A couple of the more concerning eye conditions – glaucoma and macular degeneration – can be caught much earlier, thanks to new diagnostic tools such as High Definition Ocular Coherence Tomography – which is basically MRI for your eyes, and Auto Florescence – which allows you to look below the surface of the retina, than was ever possible before.

The risk of developing glaucoma, dubbed “the thief

in the night” because it has no symptoms in the early stages, is another reason early detection is important. “You can lose at least 50 per cent of vision from glaucoma before you would know it,” explains Dr. McRoberts, founder of Optomeyes clinic.

Anyone over the age of 40 should be routinely tested for glaucoma, a gradual loss of mid-peripheral vision, where the fibres in the optic nerve slowly die. Eventually, all that is left to look through is a narrow tube.

“Hereditarily, if you have a father with it — your risk goes up. A mother, even more. A sibling; the risk goes way up,” says Dr. McRoberts. The new OCT digital imaging instrument allows Dr. McRoberts to actually measure how thick the optic nerve fibre layers are — and detect the disease five or six years earlier than before possible. So far this high definition scan is only available at a few optometry clinics in B.C., including Dr. McRoberts’ offices.

Dr. McRoberts offers genetic testing on people with macular degeneration. The latest research shows that there are two distinct genetic types of

this disease and each responds very differently to the recommended supplement treatment. By testing his patients, Dr. McRoberts learns who should take which type of supplements to control or even improve the condition. “It’s going to change everything with macular degeneration treatment, and definitely improve outcomes,” says Dr. McRoberts, of the genetic testing.

In general, people aged 65 and older should see their optometrists annually for a dilated eye exam and retinal digital imaging.

Those who fall into the 20-65 age category should have their eyes checked every two years. Exceptions to this are people who have particular ocular risk such as diabetics.

Annual eye exams are important for youth under the age of 19 because their eyes are constantly changing and growing in those years.

“Kids can have large vision changes from year to year,” says Dr. McRoberts, who adds the advent of technology and computers has

created an increase in the number of nearsighted children. There are myopia progression treatments for these children as well. The key here is to prevent high prescriptions from occurring.

One final piece of advice from Dr. McRoberts is ”our practice is big on ocular nutrition. Eat your leafy greens, Pharmaceutical grade omega-3s and orange peppers, and avoid fried foods.”

COOKINGSet grill up for medium direct heat.Oil your cooking grids with a basting brush and put Cod fillets directly onto grill (use a grill pan for less mess). Cook for approx. 3 minutes per side or until browned and cooked through. Tent with foil while you grill the tortillas - 1 min per side or until warmed and just beginning to crisp.Break apart the fish into bite sized pieces and place them into the tortilla. Top with sour cream, cabbage and mango salsa. Serve with a wedge of lime.

• Rub Cajun spice and salt and pepper all over both sides of the fillets - set into fridge for 15 minutes so fish can absorb the flavor.

• Dice the mango, onion and avocado and mix into a bowl with the lime juice. Season with salt & pepper to taste. Put into fridge. (Can be made up to one hour before dinner)

• Finely chop the cabbage for garnishing the tacos.

Basic Cruising is the introductory level for keel boat sailors. The syllabus is set by CYA and to receive a basic cruising certificate you must pass the written and practical tests. The course is run over five days, with a short 1-hour classroom session each day and 7 hours on the water in the Club's J22 keel boats. The course includes using the outboard, getting a boat ready to sail, handling sails, man-overboard procedures, anchoring and basic sails, man-overboard procedures, anchoring and basic sailing equipment and terminology. This course includes the PCOC if you don’t already have it.

Sail Canada (CYA) Basic Cruising This course offers two 5-hour days spent on the water with an instructor/coach. You will cruise the waters of Howe Sound and experience the fun and excitement of keelboat sailing. You will be intro-duced to the basics of steering, using the sails and generally just having fun on the water. No experience is necessary!
