Janet Christie understands the frustration of unwanted body hair better than most; she’s experienced the daily struggle with body hair first-hand. It’s what drove her to become a laser hair removal technician.Christie has had hirsutism, or excessive hair. She remembers her mother having to bleach her hair from a very early age. Discovering laser hair removal was a turning point for her.“It’s changed my life,” she says.

Now Christie helps others with the same issues every day at Bodyside Laser Clinic. “It’s a topic that’s never discussed and is sometimes embarrassing to discuss,” she says.A medical professional by trade, Christie started out as a nurse in Johannesburg, South Africa and from there moved onto tattoo removal and finally laser treatments, which she’s been performing for nine years now. She moved to Vancouver in 2008 and opened Bodyside Laser in late 2009.

When new clients come in, she starts their experience with a complimentary consultation, in which she discusses the laser used at Bodyside, the procedures and what to expect in each treatment.“Mostly people come to me with a great amount of fear,” she says.“In my consultation I always discuss myself. As soon as I start talking about my own issue, people feel more comfortable discussing themselves.”Bodyside uses the Cynosure Apogee Elite laser, which differs from those commonly found in salons or spas.

“The beauty of our laser machine is that we can perform a number of different treatments,” says Christie.“The hand piece used never touches your skin, making it more hygienic between clients. Cynosure Elite, in my opinion, is the Rolls Royce of laser machines.”Christie’s daughter, Sarah Christie-Manvell, works with her at Bodyside. She performs some of the laser treatments and manages the day to day administration of the clinic.“She’s been trained by me so we do things very similarly,” says Christie.“I like people to just understand that they are an individual here and their treatments will be programed according to them as a person.”Body Laser Clinic offers treatments not only for hair removal, but also for skin rejuvenation, pigmentation, spider veins, pore reduction and nail fungus.

3 zucchini 3 tablespoons butter, softened 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

SETUPPreheat grill for direct medium-high heat, and lightly oil the grate.

COOKINGGrill the zucchini until the cheese has melted and the slices are cooked through and show grill marks, about 8 minutes

INGREDIENTS

Vegetarian Barbecue? You betcha! Or makes a great side dish with your favorite steak!

• Cut the zucchini in half crosswise, then slice each half into 3 slices lengthwise, making 6 slices per zucchini.

• Mix the butter, garlic, and parsley in a bowl, and spread the mixture on both sides of each zucchini slice.

• Sprinkle one side of each slice with Parmesan cheese, and place the slices, cheese sides up, crosswise on the preheated grill to keep them from falling through.
