Respect. Confidence. Self-defence.Three important things students of North Shore Taekwondo’s popular summer camps will learn.

The week-long camps run through July and August. They are open to both new and returning students and provide a great chance for children interested in taekwondo to try it out, according to Master Tony Kook.

“It’s open to anyone, whether they’ve done martial arts or not,” he says. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for new students to join.”

Each camp lasts one week, running daily from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Students start their day with martial arts training. Afternoons are reserved for other fun activities like bowling, laser tag and swimming.

North Shore Taekwondo takes a powerful approach to their teachings. Not only does the centre teach martial arts, it also focus on

monthly themes that highlight the tenants of those teachings.

Themes focus on areas such as respect, self-confidence and empowerment. One week every month is dedicated exclusively to self-defence.

“Our class themes are extremely important,” says Kook. “It’s the core of our program. The punching and the kicking are just tools.”

Instructors use this approach across the spectrum of their classes, from

children and youth to adults, with age-appropriate themes.

The thematic approach is also used in the summer camps, with daily themes focusing on topics like how to respond to bullying behaviour. According to Kook, the program focuses on bullying behaviour rather than “bullies” as bullying behaviour can come from a variety of different sources, even friends.

“Parents really love that about our program,” says Kook.

“We really empower our kids with important life skills. We teach them to stand up for themselves.”

Camps are open to students aged 7 to 13. The cost for a week-long camp is $275. Participants receive a

camp tee-shirt. There is also a special promotion on for new students, which includes a uniform and free one-month membership in the price.

Each camp accepts a maximum of 24 students. At least four black belt instructors will be on hand at each camp to teach and supervise the kids.

“We have such passionate instructors that love what they do,” says Kook.

“I love bragging about my staff of instructors, because they really are truly amazing.”
