FORMER PRESIDENT HONORED Former North Platte Community College vice president Marilyn McGahan was honored Tuesday for her many years of service to NPCC. When McGahan retired five years ago, the Mid-Plains Educa-tion Association, an organization of NPCC non-technical faculty mem-bers, purchased a tree in her honor. It was planted on the south side of the Health and Science Center soon after construction on the building was completed. The tree was officially dedicated on Tuesday and a plaque recognizing McGahan was unveiled. The ceremony was open to the public and was attended by many of McGahan’s former col-leagues. “This is just a great lasting tribute to one of the best college administrators I have ever met,” said Dr. Jody Tomanek, area vice-president of academic affairs and NPCC. Roger Volentine, who had been the president of the MPEA at the time of McGahan’s retirement, said there were always three things about McGahan that impressed him. “First, was her involvement with the Health and Science Center,” said Volentine. “A lot of the credit for it has to go to Marilyn because of all the planning that went into making the building a reality.”

MOSQUITOES TEST POSITIVE Mosquitoes in Chase County have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) according to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department. This follows two confirmed positive WNV human cases in the health district. “People get West Nile Virus from an infected female mosquito bite and our concern is that the virus has no vaccine,” states Melissa Propp, RN, Surveillance Nurse at SWNPHD. “I encourage residents to prevent getting mosquito bites and making adjustments to their sur-roundings.” West Nile Virus is not limited to the locations which have positive tested mosquitoes. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): · Most people (70-80%) who become infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms. About 1 in 5 peo-ple who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Most people with this type of West Nile virus disease recover completely, but fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or months. Less than 1% of people who are infected will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or sur-rounding tissues). These symptoms can include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, seizures, or paralysis.

WEBSITE AND ONLINE VIDEO FOR DEATH PENALTY A group that wants to reinstate Nebraska's death penalty in the No-vember election has unveiled a website and online video to make its case to voters. The video released Tuesday highlights crimes committed by Nebraska's death row inmates. Nebraskans for the Death Penalty says the ad is intended to reinforce that, to keep the death penalty on the books, voters need to vote to repeal the legislation which abolished it. Nebraska lawmakers eliminated the death penalty in May 2015, overriding Gov. Pete Ricketts' veto. A petition drive partially financed by Ricketts gathered enough signatures to prevent the law from going into effect until voters decide whether to retain it. The video is narrated by Steve Zimkilton, the voiceover actor featured in the television series Law & Order.

The Royals won a battle of solo home runs, including Raul Mondesi's first Major League homer off Justin Verlander, in a 6-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday night at Comerica Park. Kansas City, which can sweep the series on Wednesday, secured its fourth straight series win and is 7 1/2 games back in the American League Wild Card stand-ings. Detroit fell six games back of the first-place Indians in the AL Central and 3 1/2 out in the WC race. "We have as good a possibility of going on a run to finish this thing off as anybody does," Royals starter Danny Duffy said. "I believe that we can do it. All of us do. There's not a single person in here that doesn't think we could go get it. We're looking forward to the challenge." The Royals go for the sweep tonight. Pregame coverage on 1300 KBRL-AM starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team is ranked 13th in the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division II Top 25 pre-season poll. Last year, UNK went 29-7 and finished the year ranked 15th. The Lopers received 581 points to be one of seven Central Re-gion teams in the top 13. Defending national champion Wheeling Jesuit of West Virginia is No. 2 (1,120 points; 20 first place votes) with Concordia-St. Paul (1,140 points; 25 first place votes) the nation's top ranked squad. The CSP Golden Bears won seven straight national titles between 2007-2013 and hosted the Central Regional last year. They were upset by Wayne State in the regional final, 3-0. Other Central teams in the poll are Southwest Minnesota State (No. 4), Wayne (No. 6), Central Missouri (No. 9), Minnesota-Duluth (10th), Central Oklahoma (No. 12), Washburn (No. 16), Northern State (No. 17) and Winona State (No. 21). This marks UNK's 293rd week ranked in the AVCA Division II poll, fourth most behind only UCM (384), Tampa (368) and UMD (309).The last time Kearney wasn't ranked was the preseason poll for the 2007 season.
