SEPTEMBER “THE WORD ON THE STREET“Hi, I‟m Murray from Sesame Street, and I‟m looking for… the Word on the street!” Subsequently, he speaks with folks about what today‟s word means and usually instructs the audience to keep listening for the word throughout the episode. When Colton watches this segment, it seems to be a word that is a bit over his head, such as confidence, innovation, and subtraction. However, thanks to the lovely Netflix there was an episode with the word celebration and Colton caught on very quick! Colton was spreading the word all around our house, beating pots and pans! The past week a small, yet mighty, group of people finished our 12-week study of A.D. The Bible Continues. A few people commented that the episodes did a superb job recreating Jerusalem and the culture with its unique value systems, political structure, and the struggle and role of women during this period. In retrospect, what stood out to me was the simple message the disciples and other believers were sharing- Jesus is the Messiah! After God‟s Spirit poured out on the disciples, the day of Pentecost, the disciples were commissioned to take this message out in the world and into the Roman streets. In short, the word on the street was the crucified (now Risen) Jesus was the Messiah. He was the Risen Christ and as we discovered throughout our study this message was neither accepted or appreciated by the Jews and especially the Romans. Despite the harsh social circumstances, the disciples were compelled to share that Jesus of Nazareth was no longer held down by death and despair, but very much alive and moving! Just as the disciples shared Jesus is the Messiah, we still today have the great joy and opportunity to share this Good News. At Fort Myers Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), one of the newest ways our Evangelism Team has decided to get the word out on the street is by creating magnetic, bumper decals for our church. As you can see below, the decal will have our church name, the chalice, and our website. In the near future, we would like to encourage our worshipers to place one on their vehicle(s) as this will help raise awareness to FMCC and hopefully bring in new visitors. Another project our Evangelism Team has discussed and put together was a small, concise pamphlet, which would get the word out on the street about not just our church and directions to it, but also share our Disciples‟ heritage and beliefs to those who might be unfamiliar with our denomination. The mini pamphlets can be utilized to place on an advertising wall if you live in a condo, be handed out to friends and neighbors, and be extended out to the community through our other current ministries at FMCC. Although the weather has not seemed like it during these blazing hot few weeks, the Fall is definitely here and it‟s time to look forward to some exciting new adventures! Let‟s get the word out on the street! “THE WORD ON THE STREET”

“Hi, I‟m Murray from Sesame Street, and I‟m looking for… the Word on

the street!” Subsequently, he speaks with folks about what today‟s word means

and usually instructs the audience to keep listening for the word throughout the

episode. When Colton watches this segment, it seems to be a word that is a bit

over his head, such as confidence, innovation, and subtraction. However, thanks

to the lovely Netflix there was an episode with the word celebration and Colton

caught on very quick! Colton was spreading the word all around our house,

beating pots and pans!

The past week a small, yet mighty, group of people finished our 12-week

study of A.D. The Bible Continues. A few people commented that the episodes did a superb job recreating

Jerusalem and the culture with its unique value systems, political structure, and the struggle and role of

women during this period. In retrospect, what stood out to me was the simple message the disciples and

other believers were sharing- Jesus is the Messiah! After God‟s Spirit poured out on the disciples, the day

of Pentecost, the disciples were commissioned to take this message out in the world and into the Roman

streets. In short, the word on the street was the crucified (now Risen) Jesus was the Messiah. He was the

Risen Christ and as we discovered throughout our study this message was neither accepted or appreciated

by the Jews and especially the Romans. Despite the harsh social circumstances, the disciples were

compelled to share that Jesus of Nazareth was no longer held down by death and despair, but very much

alive and moving! Just as the disciples shared Jesus is the Messiah, we still today have the great joy and

opportunity to share this Good News.

At Fort Myers Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), one of the newest ways our Evangelism Team

has decided to get the word out on the street is by creating magnetic, bumper

decals for our church. As you can see below, the decal will have our church

name, the chalice, and our website.

In the near future, we would like to encourage our worshipers to place one on

their vehicle(s) as this will help raise awareness to FMCC and hopefully bring in

new visitors.

Another project our Evangelism Team has discussed and put together was a small, concise pamphlet,

which would get the word out on the street about not just our church and directions to it, but also share our

Disciples‟ heritage and beliefs to those who might be unfamiliar with our denomination. The mini

pamphlets can be utilized to place on an advertising wall if you live in a condo, be handed out to friends

and neighbors, and be extended out to the community through our other current ministries at FMCC.

Not only will students hit the classrooms this Fall,

but also this September we will go back to the school

grounds as we will begin a sermon series called “Back

to the School House.” While parents want to equip

their children with the best morals and behaviors when

attending their traditional classes, we will examine

Scriptures in both the Old and New Testament that

speak on topics we can use in our everyday classrooms

of life.

FROM THE MODERATOR ~ Bill Brainard

As fall rolls in and students return to

school, we are looking forward to our

choir returning in September, the

upcoming Fall Festival, and the

resuming of the rest of the actives here at

FMCC.

Summer has been busy, our

Evangelism team and the Congregational

life team have been very active this summer and have

been doing great work.

The school supply program was a big hit and very well

supported many thanks to all who gave and also to those

that sorted and delivered the many bags of supplies.

As stated above the fall fest is the coming. Many hands

are needed, both on Friday and Saturday of the Fall Fest.

We would be glad to see YOU.

The carpet, the pew and chair fabric were cleaned by A

Advanced Cleaners. They all look great.

A group of members then cleaned all the wooden parts,

making everything look wonderful. A big Thank You

goes out to Shirley Fizer for scheduling and organizing all

of this as well as cleaning the sanctuary windows.

New mulch has been ordered and is expected soon. If you see or have any problems, please let me know.

We are a small church with very BIG hearts. The collection of school

supplies for Tanglewood and GLAD was a huge success again this

year. We've got the children off to a good start with school supplies.

An additional $297.00 was donated for more supplies. Upon delivery,

there were many smiles and great gratitude. Thank you all for the

love blessings.

SUMMER CLEANING! Our grounds are spruced up with thanks to

several ~

THANKS to Art Napoli for painting the

narthex and prayer room this summer.

Over the years, he has faithfully painted our fellowship

hall, offices, preschool room, restrooms, narthex, and most

recently, prayer room! He‟s certainly earned the Painter -

Extraordinaire Award!

Shirley Fizer scrubbed the insides of the outdoor sign,

washed the sanctuary windows and headed up a crew to

clean the woodwork in the sanctuary!

Our sanctuary carpets, pews, and chairs have been

professionally cleaned by A-Advanced Cleaners and what

a great job they did!

We had a cleaning group from the church to clean ALL

the wood in the sanctuary. We had a great turn out.

We are just sparkling! Couldn‟t have done it without all

the working hands!

COFFEE HOUR

THANK YOU for the favorable

response to our plea for Coffee Hour treats! This is an in-house ministry of fellowship for our

regular attenders as well as an opportunity to bring in

visitors and get to know them. Relationships develop

over a sip and a nibble! This is a ministry that

everyone can participate in ~ bake or buy refreshments.

Not able to do that? Donate dollars and we‟ll shop for

you! There‟s a ministry moment for each of us ~ no

matter our age or stage! Please sign up in the

Fellowship Hall.

WORSHIP MINISTRY

PAULETTE IDOL, TEAM LEADER The month of September is rather quiet for

the Worship Committee. There are projects

planned by other Committees, which may be

highlighted during the weekly services this

month.

For now, the Committee is looking towards

the return „home‟ of our seasonal congregational members, the

Holidays as they affect the church and, of course, the

upcoming Advent Season.

We are always placing on our wish list the need for

volunteers to serve during the Worship Service as greeters,

liturgists, and presenters of elements. Let me hear from you

directly if any portion of this service is of interest to you, i.e.

reading aloud the weekly scripture or responsive reading only.

Please contact me with any questions or suggestions you

may have regarding our worship service. Something new and

outreaching could be developed from the ideas you present and

become uplifting for our congregation. DONATIONS TO THE CRAFTERS FOR CHRIST

are always welcomed and appreciated. This year-

round ministry serves a multitude of children and

adults in need ~ from clothing to blankets. Our

talented ladies give of their time and talents to

make a difference in these lives. You can, too,

with your financial donation for fabric, thread,

batting & backing, trim, and machine repairs.

EVANGELISM MINISTRY ED & BEV LADUKE, TEAM LEADERS We had two good meetings since our last

article. The response to our request for

assistance was outstanding. The

attendance at our meetings and

suggestions we received exceeded our

expectations & were very much appreciated.

FMCC is listed in the telephone book white pages

under Fort Myers Christian Church Disciples of Christ. We

also have a website www.disciplesfm.org; If you did not

know our exact name, it was difficult to find FMCC.

Pastor Zach, in working with the website developer, made

our name and location much more accessible on the

internet. This is a good first step in our evangelism effort.

The Indianapolis Disciple Organization has a website

www.disciples.org that has a link for finding a Disciple

church. Enter an address or zip code and you get the

nearby Disciple churches. If DoC members were made

aware of this, a DoC church could be found when traveling

or moving. We contacted Indianapolis and requested they

include this information in their educational material.

We have a number of evangelism suggestions under

consideration. Evangelism thoughts & ideas are always

welcome & appreciated. At the present time we continue

to possess the single most important asset a church has

available to them, our members. We ask that all of us

think about evangelism on a regular basis. OUTREACH MINISTRY
