The Stephanie Marks Appeal has held a very successful Oriental Evening this week. The evening was sponsored by the Desborough Hotel Group and was held at the Anchor Hotel in Shepperton on Friday 22nd April. The evening was a sell-out with over 60 guests helping to raise funds for the diabetes appeal. As well as money from ticket sales the evening was boosted by the sell-out fortune cookie tombola. Brooklands College students donated 250 fortune cookies, each with a fortune inside, and 50 with a number that corresponded with a prize. Prizes ranged from a portrait sitting worth £225 to family Odeon cinema vouchers. There was musical entertainment and dancing after the meal, and everyone had an wonderful evening. Press Officer Jane O’Kill was there: “I haven't had a such a good Chinese meal since I was in Beijing!” she said. “It was a great night, and we have an excellent photographic record of the evening, and it would be true to say a good time was had by all !” Fundraising Manager Val Marks said: “Desborough Hotels have been fantastic. They have paid for the venue, the food and even some of the other costs. Every penny made on the night came straight to the appeal. What’s more they have signed up to do it all again in July, when they will be hosting a Summer Bar-B-Que at the Warren Lodge in Shepperton Square. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through me in the fundraising office.” Val can be contacted on 01932 722330 or [email protected]. Appeal goes ORIENTAL! Do you want to develop your knowledge and skills? We are looking to train additional job evaluators to sit on panels. Are you able to give some time to the A4C project? (Managers have to agree this). We are offering a Job Evaluation training course in May (dates to be confirmed) and we will consider all grades of staff with or without previous qualifications. We need a wide variety of staff so if you have worked here for days or years, in an office or a ward area, we will be pleased to hear from you. The most important skill will be your ability to look at and evaluate jobs by dismissing commonly held biases, assessing responsibilities and skills, making informed decisions and coming to correct conclusions. Staff who are currently involved are enjoying taking part, meeting other members of staff and the variety of the evaluation work taking place. The panelists learn more about the scope of work at the Trust. Interested? In the first instance please talk to Rupert Devereux in the A4C office on ext 3470. This is a nationally organised program, and the course can lead to a NHS recognised NVQ qualification. Mattress Demonstration Workshop for Health and Maternity Care Assistants Pressure Area Care and Pressure Relieving Mattresses – 24th May 2005, 1.30 to 3.30 at Ashford. Contact Dolly Bhaskaran ext 4703 to book. Pain Assessment is Fifth Vital Sign Speaking at a presentation of 250 wipe clean laminate sheets from GlaxoSmithKline this week, Acute Pain Service Sister Harriet Hartley said: “We are keen to encourage staff to consider pain assessment as the ‘Fifth Vital Sign’ alongside other observations such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration rate. It is also important to involve the patient in pain assessment wherever possible. With this in mind, we approached GlaxoSmithKline to ask whether they could help us with the production of a large copy of a pain assessment tool that could be placed in the bedside folder of every surgical and orthopaedic patient across both hospital sites. These areas were selected by us as our main remit is acute, post-operative pain management. We were delighted that GlaxoSmithKline agreed to help and they have provided us with 250 copies of the pain assessment tool. The wipe clean sheet can be used in all sorts of situations; the patient can call out the number that corresponds with their level of pain or even simply point to the large text. We hope that this will enable patients to be actively involved in assessing their pain whilst encouraging the standardisation of pain assessment across the Trust.” Assistance With the Cost of Childcare The Trust, in conjunction with Busy Bees has been offering, as part of its family friendly initiative, a more flexible way of meeting the costs of your childcare, under which, part of your wages or salary can be given up in exchange for Childcare Vouchers. Up until April 2005 many employees were able to benefit from National Insurance savings when they used Childcare Vouchers. However since April 2005, Childcare Vouchers are non-taxable and exempt from National Insurance up to a limit of £217 per month per working parent. The Childcare Vouchers received are then exchanged, in whole or part, for the childcare services you use. Childcare Vouchers cover children up to 16 years of age For a parent information pack please contact either Busy Bees direct on Freephone 08000 430 860 or you may wish to contact Jacqui George Childcare Co-ordinator on 01276 526617.
