TThey met nearly 10 years ago just by chance.She would ride the bus daily to and from school

n Santa Monica. Her primary way home was public

transportation. And there he was — driving the busshe would take.David Abarca, then 27, began romancing Jackie

When David met Jackie ...




Funes, 19 at the time, and after whatseemed like a months-long courtship, hebegan calling her his girlfriend and he herboyfriend.Like all couples, they went through some

difcult times over the years.Jackie grew up in a family that was quite

close, tight-knit and strict.Coming form a strong cultural — and pa-

rental — background meant that she hadto keep the love of her life a secret.After almost a decade together, David

asked Jackie to be his wife.The pair nally broke the news to Jackie’s

parents, who didn’t exactly take it well.Not as understanding as she wanted them

to be, Jackie’s parents ipped out and sheleft the home she had known for 28 years.

In the months that followed, it was hardfor Jackie’s father to cope, and he nally

accepted their union and gave his blessingfor them to be man and wife.Despite the tumultuous times, the couple

was able to realize their dreams, walkdown the aisle and live happily ever after.

Setting the scene at the Ritz After getting the Funes clan’s

approval, Jackie set out to nda cheap, local location — not aneasy thing to do when the bigday was just a few weeks away.Luckily, her sister, Juliette, de-

cided to be the impromptu wed-ding planner.Juliette helped her hunt for a

site, pick the colors and seek tomake the wedding as success-ful as possible — with just threemonths of planning.Despite the ‘80s-inspired look

of the Ritz Gardens, the sisterssettled on the location, wedding dateand they began the next step in theprocess — the decor.

It’s hard to believethat a bride has neverthought about the

colors or theme shewould like her wed-ding to have.But that was just the

case with Jackie.After being pushed

to nally choose, sheeventually picked hertheme colors — hotpink, black and silver.She incorporated

dozens of owers androses, crandles, but-teries and custom-ized black and hotpink skulls to accentu-ate her centerpieces.

It’s all in the details ...

About 80 of the bride and groom’sclose friends and family arrived atthe Ritz to watch the couple wed.Although nervous and sad, Rutilio

walked his oldest daughter downthe aisle and gave her away.

Bridesmaids, Kathleen and Juliette,and groomsmen, Adan and Joshua,David’s brother and nephew respec-tively, watched the ceremony withring bearer, Junior.The mother of the bride, Ines, and

David’s mother, Magdalena, congratu-lated their children.

The frst dance o the night Newlyweds David and Jackie had their rst

dance to Billy Joel’s “Just the way you are” shortly after walking into the reception hall

and being greeted by applause.The parents’ dance came next with Jackiedancing with her tearful dad and David withhis mom.
