Wedding Music Form & Guidelines (Revised May 2016) Wedding Music Guidelines Because the Marriage Rite is a liturgical celebration, it calls for liturgical music. The requirements for music at the wedding liturgy are the same as for Sunday Mass or any other liturgical celebration. Each piece of music for the liturgy needs to be evaluated according to liturgical, pastoral, and musical criteria: Is it connected to the liturgical action and does it use a text suitable for that particular part of the rite? Does it draw the gathered assembly more deeply into the holy things being celebrated? Is the music of good quality, capable of expressing the profound mystery of God’s love? These criteria are drawn from the U.S. bishops’ music guidelines, Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, which states...when selecting music for your wedding, there are three basic criteria: 1) Music must be able to be sung by the assembly. 2) Music must fit the spirit and structure of the liturgy. 3) Music must be of high quality and appropriate content. The music selected for use within the wedding liturgy (whether or not that includes the Liturgy of the Eucharist) must speak of Christian marriage as a covenant involving not only a man and a woman, but also God. Wedding music should therefore, be a prayerful expression of the commitment the couple makes in the presence of other Christians. It should also be music that can involve all who are present in the praise and worship of God. There are many songs to choose from within both the contemporary and traditional music styles that fit the above criterion; the assigned Parish Musician will be happy to meet and assist you in planning the music for your wedding. The following pages contain suggestions of music commonly used during Wedding Celebrations. These suggestions can be used as a starting point to help you plan music for your Wedding day. Please feel free to consult with the assigned Parish Musician to discuss other options, which may not be contained on this list. We are usually more than willing to accommodate any special musical requests you might have. We are blessed to have a number of talented musicians at St. Patrick Parish. We strongly encourage that you select musicians from our provided list (the final page of this document), as they are most familiar with the liturgical rites, music, PA set-up, and acoustical environment of St. Patrick Parish. Any guest musicians must be approved ahead of time, and are required to adhere to the guidelines set forth for a Catholic Wedding. *Please do not make any arrangements with guest musicians before consulting with the Pastor. *Please use the following pages to assist you in planning music for your Wedding. Generally, the musician(s) will arrange a time to meet with you prior to your Wedding to address any questions you might have. The accompanist and cantor usually do not attend the rehearsal, as this time is meant for you to learn what will happen when. If a special request is made for the musician to attend the rehearsal, please note that they will not perform any music. This is to allow for the special sacredness of the ceremony to be observed on the actual Wedding day.

Wedding Music Form & Guidelines

(Revised May 2016)

Wedding Music Guidelines Because the Marriage Rite is a liturgical celebration, it calls for liturgical music.

Wedding Music Suggestions (Although commonly used, the following songs are only suggestions. Many couples have requested a special secular piece be played during the processional/recessional in recent years. This is one of few places in the Catholic Wedding ceremony where some flexibility is allowed, so long as it is played instrumentally and not sung. Though most special requests will be considered, they are dependent upon your assigned musician. Be sure to check with them if you have a special song in mind that is not listed here. Please note, an additional fee may be required for the purchase of sheet music for special song requests not in our library.)

Presentation to the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Though not officially part of the Catholic Rite of Marriage, many brides wish to present flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary after communion. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the ultimate role model for the Catholic bride, as she will strive to mirror Mary's perfect love for God and devotion to her family. Brides often wish to seek the guidance and blessings of the Lord through a ceremony that requests the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Appropriate hymns to be played or sung during this time of reflective prayer include: Ave Maria (J.S. Bach/Charles Gounod)

Musician Fees & Payment Information

(Each musician's fee may vary slightly from this depending upon experience, but most will follow the

rates posted below, as suggested by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.)

Accompanist/Director: $200 Cantor: $100

Total Musician Fees: $300

All musician fees should be paid before the date of your Wedding. Your assigned musician will inform you of their policy for payment. In most cases, we ask that you please drop off or mail a check in a clearly marked envelope to the attention of your musician at the Parish office for which your Wedding is to occur. Ideally, we ask that this be taken care of at least two weeks in advance of your Wedding date. If special arrangements need to be made, please inform the musician with plenty of advance notice. This is to ensure that our musicians are paid for their time and service to you. An additional fee may be required to purchase sheet music of special song requests not in our library. This cost can range anywhere from $5 to $20 depending on how much additional music needs to be purchased. The assigned musician will be sure to mention if this fee is needed, and obtain your permission before agreeing to purchase sheet music for special song requests you might have. If there is a guest soloist or other guest musicians (i.e. family member or friend), there is an additional charge of $25 for each rehearsal needed with the guest musician(s). We are blessed to have many talented musicians at both St. Andrew and St. Patrick Parish. For each Wedding scheduled, there will usually be two individuals present: a cantor and a pianist/organist. If a request is made for additional instrumentalists (brass, flute, strings, etc.), they will require additional fees and must be given plenty of advance notice (these musicians should be paid directly.)

*Please do not make any arrangements with guest musicians before consulting with the Director of Music Ministry. It is the policy of St. Patrick Parish that our own trained music ministers provide music for all Weddings, as they are most familiar with the liturgical rites, music, PA set-up, and acoustical environment of St. Patrick Parish. Any guest musicians must be approved ahead of time, and are required to adhere to our Wedding Music Guidelines.
