    III. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

"he !ro%ect was undertaken to em!ower community for clean, green lifestyle. Me2green 10- u! with /ranti 1go to create awareness a out cleanliness among the residents of 'nand 1agar $ociety, akola. 'nother as!ect of the !ro%ect was our research on the re!air industry. +e interviewed severalre!air vendors in the Chem ur, Mum ai area to understand the sco!e of their usiness andtheir views on s!reading awareness a out the enefits of re!airing instead of dis!osing off items right away.

    IV. PROJECT METHODOLOGY

Me20reen is a voluntary organisation currently focussed on !reventing excessive usage ofnatural resources. -ur !ro%ect, (Em!owering the community for a clean, green lifestyle) wasaimed at engraving these same values within local communities and generating awareness. "odo so, we first decided to educate the young minds at /ranti, an 10- that works to em!owergirls from red light areas. +e found it ideal to educate them and make them the social agentsto change the local mind set. 3ence, the first !art of our !ro%ect involved conducting a cleanu! drive of a vacant !lot of land %ust in front of the /ranti house at akola. +e started ysurveying the !lot with our mentor, and understanding the source of gar age. 'fter this, we

!roceeded to conduct a survey of all the houses in that co o!erative society. +e did this to gettheir views on the clean u! drive, reasons for incessant dum!ing and their willingness to %ointhe drive. #ost this, we met u! with 4MC officials at akola, to seek their hel! and

!ermission. "hough the 4MC officials were very enthusiastic and more than willing to

!rovide hel!, we were una le to match timings and hence conducted the drive inde!endently."he 4MC officials also came over to akola to have a look at the !lot and suggest measuresto sto! the dum!ing. +e !re!ared an em!owerment kit for the girls, which outlined thevarious elements of a clean u! drive, along with im!ortant information on recycla lematerials and their uses. +e successfully conducted a clean u! drive and held a worksho! forthe /ranti 0irls on the 56 th of 7e ruary, 2859. :uring the worksho!, we ex!lained to themthe im!ortance of cleanliness and the various ways of ;u!cycling’ old

    VI. CHALLENGES FACED

-ver the course of this !ro%ect, we faced a few hurdles that can e ex!lained as follows.

"he first challenge we faced was with the residents of the housing society at 'nand 1agar,

akola. 'lthough they were unha!!y a out the incessant dum!ing, they were not very willingand forthcoming to change the situation. 3ence, gaining their acce!tance and confidence wasa task. 's !er the original !lan, a new 4MC dust in was to e installed near the ground to

!revent dum!ing. ?!on talking to the 4MC officials, we realised that dust ins could einstalled only on main roads. 3ence we had to find a way to work around this situation andurge residents to walk that extra distance to dis!ose off gar age in the 4MC !rovided in.

1ext, the girls at /ranti were initially reluctant to !artici!ate in the drive and clean u!gar age. +e coaxed them to do it, and once into it, they shed all inhi itions and com!letedthe clean u! enthusiastically.

    VII. AGENDA FOR THE FUTURE

"he crux of our !ro%ect was to ring a out a long term lifestyle change in the community toado!t green measures in everyday life. "hus our agenda for the future will e to make surethat the cleanliness initiative undertaken at 'nand 1agar is sustained in the long run and isalso communicated to other !arts of the society. It is im!ortant to understand that our !lanetis highly overused and there is an urgent need to cur the usage of resources and find etterways to reuse them for sustaina ility in the long run. "o achieve this, it is essential that every

!erson in the community is well informed a out the various ways in which waste materialscan e reused and u!cycled. 7or exam!le, old glass ottles can e !ainted and fitted withlights to make for a decorative ta le lam!. #lastic 4ottles can e cut and used as holders fortiny sa!lings. 4y reusing everyday things in such sim!le ways, we can make a mammothcontri ution to the environment and do our it in making the !lanet a etter !lace to live in.

    VIII. INTERNSHIP LEARNINGS

+e learned a out different ways to dis!ose waste like !a!er, !lastic, glass and which waste !roducts can e recycled and reused. Making a new !roduct re@uires a lot of materials andenergy raw materials must e extracted from the earth, and the !roduct must e fa ricatedthen trans!orted to wherever it will e sold. 's a result, recycling and reuse are the mosteffective ways you can save natural resources, !rotect the environment and save money. Italso allows !roducts to e used to their fullest extent and thus reduces the amount of wastethat will need to e recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators.

-ther im!ortant learning form the internshi! was a out the im!ortance of "he 7ourth A>A in

    >educe, >euse B >ecycle which is >e!air. 's crucial as it is to reduce, reuse, and recycle, it se@ually vital to honor the fourth, often forgotten A>&A re!air. >estoring this missing A> sArightful !lace alongside the other three at the center of our collective environmental mantrawould save mountains of valua le resources, money, a lot of landfill s!ace, and !revent toxic

    !ollution, too.
