Mike Lano
The award-winning Encinal High School cheerleaders cooked up deserts to sell at their Island Jam booth this past weekend. The girls raised money to pay for their uni-forms and supplies.
Mike LanoMagnificent sunny weather
brought the crowds to Webster Street’s annual street fair and Father’s Day Celebration dubbed The Island Jam last weekend.
Like any great county fair, there were many unusual fried goods plus funnel cakes, candied apples, sausage, barbecue, corn dogs, ice cream and sno-cones of all flavors.
Many local restaurants and busi-nesses had a great presence includ-ing the The USS Hornet Museum, Alameda Chamber of Commerce, AC Transit and The Friends of The Alameda Animal Shelter. Alameda Hospital’s booth showed off their many free programs.
Among the many performers on the event’s two stages were Encinal High School’s Jets cheerleaders per-forming their routines. The squad spent days preparing a bake sale to raise funds for next season’s uniforms and supplies according to
Webster Street Jams OutCoach Rhonda Worthy.
This year, the stage near Lincoln Avenue was dubbed the Heath Momon stage in memory of the late learner support specialist at Argosy University. Momon’s com-mitment to the Alameda communi-ty was recognized with this honor.
Several vendors offered Warriors merchandise for sale. Other vendors sold tye-dyed goods. Lots of Father’s Day gifts were on
sale as well.Nearly half the fair was devoted
to rides for kids and the young-at-heart including a rock-climbing wall, the Crazy Bus, Ferris wheel and giant slide.
The event began in 2002 as the Peanut Butter Jam Festival in honor of Skippy Peanut Butter’s origins on Webster. In recent years, the festival’s name was shortened to the Island Jam.
Performing Space Planned for Krusi Park
Ekene IkemeFamily and friends of an Alameda
mother and daughter who passed away in a car accident are organiz-ing an effort to have a performance space constructed in their honor at Krusi Park.
On June 9, the Alameda Parks Commission voted unanimously to allocate a space at Krusi Park to build a gathering circle dedicated to Alameda resident Rachel Shahinian and her daughter Annika Zinsley.
The pair were traveling east-bound on State Route 120 in Tuolumne County, east of Modesto, on Aug. 15, 2015, when their vehicle was struck by an oncoming car (“Accident Claims Two” Aug. 27, 2015). The two were killed instantly.
Alameda resident Cindy Miner Kapelke has been working with the Alameda Recreation and Park Department (ARPD) over the last two months on a plan and design for the gathering space that is inspired by the mother and daughter.
Shahinian and Zinsley were avid ballet performers. The mother-daughter duo performed in numer-ous ballets in Alameda including two productions of The Nutcracker by the Alameda Civic Ballet.
The gathering space is located adjacent to the Krusi Park play-ground in a currently underuti-lized area, according to a memo-randum from ARPD director Amy Wooldridge. This space would fea-ture a low, two-tiered wood stage, unique to Alameda parks. The lower, ground level portion of the stage provides access to youth and families of all physical abilities.
The stage could accommodate small impromptu or planned per-formances from Otis Elementary School students — Zinsley was a student at Otis Elementary at the time of her death — Krusi Park after school and summer participants or people enjoying the park. It could also serve as a platform for picnics and play-ground watching.
The memorial would be funded through fundraising and in-kind services and support. Construction on the project will not begin until all funds are raised. The Alameda Friends of the Parks Foundation has generously offered to be the reposi-tory for all financial donations for this project. The foundation said they have raised $4,500 of its goal of $20,000 as of June 9. Family and friends who are spearheading this effort hope to acquire their financial goal for the project before the one-year anniversary of the Alameda pair’s deaths on Aug. 15.
To donate to the project, visit youcaring.com/rachelandannika or alamedaparks.org/donation-form.htm. For more informa-tion, visit facebook.com/krusi gatheringspace.
