Introduction:Stereotypes and prejudices </p> <ul><li>Stereotypes are beliefs about people based on their membership in a particular group.</li></ul> <ul><li>They can be positive, negative, or neutral.</li></ul> <ul><li>Stereotypes are based on gender, ethnicity, or occupation are common in many societies. Prejudices: </p> <ul><li>Aprejudiceis a negative belief or feeling about a particular group or individuals.</li></ul> <ul><li>They are often passed on from one generation to the next. </li></ul> <p> 4. Urban tribes: </p> <ul><li>In a search of identity, many teenagers tend to join into different urban tribes.</li></ul> <ul><li>According to Michel Maffesoli (1988), urban tribes are microgroups of people who share common interests in metropolitan areas.</li></ul> <ul><li>The members of these groups tend to have similar worldviews, dress styles and behavioral patterns.</li></ul> <ul><li>These sub-cultures suffer from stereotypes and prejudices constructed by the outsiders of these groups.</li></ul> <p> 5. 1. Task: </p> <ul><li>You are part of a non-discrimination campaign.</li></ul> <ul><li>You are in charge of designing a non-discrimination commercial to raise awareness about the negative effects stereotypes in society.</li></ul> <ul><li>In groups, looki for information in the net about stereotypes and prejudices commonly present in your society.</li></ul> <ul><li>Think about characteristics, functions, dangers, examples, etc. </li></ul> <p> 6. 2. Process: </p> <ul><li>Go to the different web sites, and look for the information you need.</li></ul> <ul><li>Once you have read it, decide on the stereotypes you want to show, and a creative means to depict them. </li></ul> <ul><li>Use images, texts, videos (if you want you can record your own videos), statistics, etc.</li></ul> <ul><li>Try to find the best way to raise consciousness in society. </li></ul> <p> 7. Conclusion: </p> <ul><li>Decide with your partners whether the ads were useful or not to raise awareness. </li></ul> <ul><li>If possible, try to upload the ad on youtube or a blog, to share it with a wider audience. </li></ul> <ul><li>Think of other ways of raising awareness about this controversial but common problem in society (leaflets, posters, radio comercial, workshops, etc.). </li></ul>
