Volunteers don’t get paid, so we don’t like to confront them.

However, it is unfair to have other board members “pick up the slack.”

Accountability Indicators for CONCERN

• Does not attend meetings• Fails to follow through on projects• Cannot meet deadlines• Stops returning phone calls and e-mails • Negative or not involved at meetings

NOW is the time to act!

Accountability The Power Lunch

• Ask about how work and life are for the volunteer • If the volunteer is overwhelmed, this is an opening to

gently ask the volunteer about stepping down• Volunteer will probably be glad to have a way out; it may

be hard to admit he/she can no longer fulfill obligations

Accountability Second Chance Options

• Explain the organization really needs results from this board function– Tie back to the defined goals

• Suggest a co-chair to help with board duties– Be sure you choose a co-chair who understands the situation

• Ask for a definite date that he/she can deliver a presentation to the board with an update

Accountability Removal of Director and Officer

• Any director or officer may be removed from office, with cause, upon an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the entire Board of Directors at a duly constituted Board of Directors meeting

• SHRM recommends that all chapter and state council bylaws have this provision
