WHY EXTRAORDINARY MISSIONARY MONTH?

During the Angelus Prayer on World Mission Sunday, October 22, 2017, Pope Francis publicly announced to the whole Church his intention to designate an Extraordinary Missionary Month for October 2019 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Pope Benedict XV’s Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud. On the same day, the Holy Father sent a letter to Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (CEP) and President of the Supreme Council of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). He entrusted him with “the work of preparing for this event, especially by raising awareness among the particular Churches, the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and among associations, movements, communities, and other ecclesial bodies.” In order to reignite the baptismal awareness of the People of God in relation to the mission of the Church, Pope Francis provided the following theme for the Extraordinary Missionary Month: “Baptized and sent: the Church of Christ on mission in the world.” In fact, reawakening an awareness of the missio ad gentes, and reinvigorating the responsibility of proclaiming the Gospel with new enthusiasm, are themes that combine the pastoral concern of Pope Benedict XV in Maximum Illud with the missionary vitality expressed by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium: “missionary outreach is paradigmatic for all the Church’s activity” (EG 15). It is about placing “the mission of Jesus at the heart of the Church, making it the criterion for measuring the effectiveness of her structures, the results of her labours, the fruitfulness of her ministers, and the joy they awaken. For without joy, we attract no one.” (Meeting with CELAM Executive Committee, Bogotá, September 7, 2017). The commitment to personal and communal conversion to Jesus Christ crucified, risen, and alive in his Church, will renew the ardour and passion for witnessing to the world the Gospel of life and Paschal joy (cf. Lk 24:46-49) through proclamation and Christian living.

THE LOGO AND ITS MEANING

“The primary colors of the Cross refer to the five continents: red for America, green for Africa, white for Europe, yellow for Asia and blue for Oceania. Red recalls the blood of American martyrs, seeds of a new life in the Christian faith. Green is the color of life and symbolizes growth, fertility, youth and vitality. It is also the color of hope, one of the three theological virtues. White is the symbol of joy, the beginning of a new life in Christ: this is the challenge facing old Europe, so that it can recover the evangelizing force that was generated thanks to so many churches and saints. Yellow is the color of light, which is nourished by light invoking the true Light. Blue is the color that symbolizes the water of life that quenches our thirst and restores us along the path to God. It is the color of the sky, a sign of God dwells with us."

¿POR QUÉ MES MISIONERO EXTRAORDINARIO?

Durante la Oración del Ángelus en el Domingo de Misión Mundial, 22 de octubre de 2017, el Papa Francisco anunciópúblicamente a toda la Iglesia su intención de designar el Mes Misionero Extraordinario para octubre del 2019 celebrando el centenario de la Carta Apostólica Maximum Illud del Papa Benedicto XV. El mismo día, el Santo Padre envió una carta al cardenal Fernando Filoni, prefecto de la Congregación para la Evangelización de los Pueblos (CEP) y presidente del Consejo Supremo de las Obras Misionales Pontificias (PMS). Le confió "el trabajo de preparación para este evento, especialmente creando conciencia entre las Iglesias particulares, los Institutos de Vida Consagrada y las Sociedades de Vida Apostólica, y entre asociaciones, movimientos, comunidades y otros cuerpos eclesiales." Para reavivar la conciencia bautismal del Pueblo de Dios en relación con la misión de la Iglesia, el Papa Francisco proporcionó el siguiente tema para el Mes Misionero Extraordinario: "Bautizados y enviados: la Iglesia de Cristo en misión en el mundo." EL LOGOTIPO Y SU SIGNIFICADO“Los colores primarios de la Cruz se refieren a los cinco continentes: rojo para América, verde para África, blanco para Europa, amarillo para Asia y azul para Oceanía. El rojo recuerda la sangre de los mártires de las Americas, semillas de una nueva vida en la fe cristiana. El verde es el color de la vida y simboliza crecimiento, fecundidad, juventud y vitalidad. También es el color de la esperanza, una de las tres virtudes teologales. El blanco es el símbolo de la alegría, el comienzo de una nueva vida en Cristo: este es el desafío que enfrenta la vieja Europa, para que pueda recuperar la fuerza evangelizadora de la que se generó gracias a tantas iglesias y santos . El amarillo es el color de la luz, que se nutre de luz invocando la verdadera Luz. El azul es el color que simboliza el agua de la vida que sacia nuestra sed y nos restaura a lo largo del camino hacia Dios. Es el color del cielo, un signo de que Dios mora entre nosotros."

A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS CHRISTWe encounter Jesus Christ living in His Church through the Eucharist, Word of God, and in personal and communal prayer. As Pope St. Paul VI said in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, “The Church is an evangelizer, but she begins by being evangelized herself… In brief, this means that she has a constant need of being evangelized, if she wishes to retain freshness, vigor and strength in order to proclaim the Gospel” (15). We begin our preparation for the Extraordinary Missionary Month where we must begin all that we do in the Church – with Jesus Christ. Only through having a personal relationship with Jesus - spending time with Him in the sacraments, scripture, community and talking with Him one-on-one, can we truly know His heart and how to share His Gospel with everyone. To help with this, the Pontifical Mission Societies have prepared daily reflections for October 2019. The Daily Reflections coincide with the readings of the day and can lead to a greater understanding of the readings considering Extraordinary Missionary Month. “Holiness is the most attractive face of the Church,” Pope Francis says in his Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate (9). When the members of the Body of Christ live an authentic Christian life, they help build up the kingdom of God (CCC, 2044- 2045). We are provided with the testimonies of missionary saints, martyrs, and witnesses to the faith to draw us ever deeper in our relationship with God and strengthen our own proclamation of the Gospel.

Pope Francis has asked each country to highlight a great missionary who shared their life for the love of the Gospel. In the U.S.A., we have chosen Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN, who was martyred in Brazil in 2005 because of her defense of indigenous people and the environment. She has become a symbolic figure of caring for the poor and oppressed. Her testimony is outlined below courtesy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. SR. DOROTHY MAE STANG

Dorothy Mae Stang grew up in a large family on a farm in Ohio. It's where she was taught how to live from the land — and where she learned to have reverence for the precious natural resources given to us. From the first moment she met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at Julienne High School, she knew she was called to religious life and joined the Sisters at the age of 17. She took the religious name of Sister Mary Joachim. While still a novice, she taught in two Chicago area parish schools. Then, at the age of 22, Sister Mary Joachim and two other Sisters were sent to Arizona to start a school in Phoenix.

In 1966, she volunteered to join the Sisters in Brazil and by that time she had returned to her baptismal name. She and the other Sisters set up a mission, working with more than 100,000 parishioners, preparing them for sacraments, teaching religion in schools, and helping with spiritual growth. On weekends, Sister Dorothy and the Sisters would head into rural villages to bring the people together, giving adults religious instructions and training lay catechists. It was during these visits when the reality of oppression and poverty struck her, and she began teaching the people about their rights as human beings.

In the 70s, the Brazilian government offered property in the Amazon interior to farmers if they would move there and develop the land in a sustainable way. However, greedy ranchers grabbed the farmers’ land and they were forced o move deeper into the rainforest. Sister Dorothy went with them and taught the farmers how to work the land in sustainable ways, without depleting rich natural resources. She helped the families live in peace and with dignity and together they began opening schools in the hills and villages surrounding the farms. The

men taught others how to grow sustainable crops and the women began small businesses to help support their families. It was a life and culture based on strong Christian spirituality and values.

This did not go over well with the ruthless wealthy landowners, speculators and loggers in Brazil, who wanted the land for their own profitable use. They burned the farmers’ homes and families were routinely forced out and left to search for safe places to live further and further into the interior. Sister Dorothy worked with the authorities to try to stop the them, but the attacks on the farmers continued. One rainy morning, Sr. Dorothy began walking down a muddy road to meet with some farmers when two hired gunmen stepped into Sister Dorothy's path. As they took aim, she reached into her bag, pulled out her bible and began reading, "Blessed are the peacemakers...". They fired six shots. Sister Dorothy fell to the ground. Her body lay in the mud for the rest of the day.

The gunmen and the ranchers thought they had put an end to Sister Dorothy and her mission. But they were wrong. They didn't count on her being named a martyr by the Vatican and being posthumously awarded the United Nations Peace Prize. They didn't know schools and programs throughout the world would be named for her, and curriculum would be changed to reflect her teaching on justice, peace and human rights. They had no idea how she would continue to inspire the people in the Brazilian rainforest, and how they would carry on the fight. They didn't expect there to be 1,200 families in 85 Base Christian Communities who would all live cooperatively and self-sufficiently a decade after her murder. And they didn't think the people would continue to build schools, more than 115 throughout the rainforest, with one that just graduated its first class of 8th graders, 17 adults and children who are the first in their families to be educated.

As we celebrate her life, Sister Dorothy has become a symbol for those who believe in the Gospel message of Jesus.

What are the biblical, catechetical, spiritual, and theological foundations for the mission of the Church? Jesus says, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19-20). A few thoughts from the ecclesiastic teachings on the church’s missionary nature are outlined below. Further teachings may be found at www.missionsla.org/emm.

ST. JOHN PAUL II'S ENCYCLICAL REDEMPTORIS MISSIO, 1990“Missionary activity proper, namely the mission ad gentes, is directed to ‘peoples or groups who do not yet believe in Christ,’ ‘who are far from Christ,’ in whom the Church ‘has not yet taken root’ and whose culture has not yet been influenced by the Gospel. It is distinct from other ecclesial activities inasmuch as it is addressed to groups and settings which are non-Christian because the preaching of the Gospel and the presence of the Church are either absent or insufficient. It can thus be characterized as the work of proclaiming Christ and his Gospel, building up the local Church and promoting the values of the kingdom. The specific nature of this missio ad gentes consists in its being addressed to ‘non-Christians.’ It is therefore necessary to ensure that this specifically ‘missionary work that Jesus entrusted and still entrusts each day to his Church’ does not become an indistinguishable part of the overall mission of the whole People of God and as a result become neglected or forgotten.” (34)

POPE BENEDICT’S POST-SYNODAL APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION VERBUM DOMINI, 2010

“In calling upon all the faithful to proclaim God’s word, the Synod Fathers restated the need in our day too for a decisive commitment to the missio ad gentes. In no way can the Church restrict her pastoral work to the ‘ordinary maintenance’ of those who already know the Gospel of Christ. Missionary outreach is a clear sign of the maturity of an ecclesial community. The Fathers also insisted that the word of God is the saving truth which men and women in every age need to hear. For this reason, it must be explicitly proclaimed. The Church must go out to meet each person in the strength of the Spirit (cf. 1 Cor 2:5) and continue her prophetic defense of people’s right and freedom to hear the word of God, while constantly seeking out the most effective ways of proclaiming that word, even at the risk of persecution.[319] The Church feels duty- bound to proclaim to every man and woman the word that saves (cf. Rom 1:14).” (95)

POPE FRANCIS’ APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION EVANGELII GAUDIUM, 2013“We cannot forget that evangelization is first and foremost about preaching the Gospel to those who do not know Jesus Christ or who have always rejected him. Many of them are quietly seeking God, led by a yearning to see his face, even in countries of ancient Christian tradition. All of them have a right to receive the Gospel. Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone.” (14) “Sometimes it seems that our work is fruitless, but mission is not like a business transaction or investment, or even a humanitarian activity. It is not a show where we count how many people come as a result of our publicity; it is something much deeper, which escapes all measurement. It may be that the Lord uses our sacrifices to shower blessings in another part of the world which we will never visit. The Holy Spirit works as he wills, when he wills and where he wills; we entrust ourselves without pretending to see striking results. We know only that our commitment is necessary.” (279)

¿Cuáles son los fundamentos bíblicos, catequéticos, espirituales y teológicos para la misión de la Iglesia? Jesús dice: "Vayan, pues, y hagan que todos los pueblos sean mis discípulos. Bautícenlos en el Nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo, y enséñenles a cumplir todo lo que yo les he encomendado a ustedes." (Mt 28: 19-20). ENCÍCLICA DE SAN JUAN PABLO II REDEMPTORIS MISSIO, 1990"La actividad misionera propiamente dicha, es decir, la missio ad gentes, está dirigida a "pueblos o grupos que aún no creen en Cristo", que están lejos de Cristo, en quien la Iglesia aún no ha echado raíces y cuya cultura aún no ha sido influenciada por el Evangelio. Es distinto de otras actividades eclesiales en la medida en que se dirige a grupos y situaciones que no son cristianos porque la predicación del Evangelio y la presencia de la Iglesia están ausentes o son insuficientes. Por lo tanto, puede caracterizarse como el trabajo de proclamar Cristo y su Evangelio, edificando la Iglesia local y promoviendo los valores del reino. La naturaleza específica de esta missio ad gentes consisten en que es dirigida a los "no cristianos." Por lo tanto, es necesario asegurar que esta "obra misionera que Jesús confió y todavía confía cada día a su Iglesia" no se convierta en una parte indistinguible de la misión general de todo el pueblo de Dios y como resultado se descuidan u olvidan.” (34)

“Al llamar a todos los fieles a proclamar la palabra de Dios, los Padres sinodales animaron la necesidad en nuestros días de un compromiso decisivo con la missio ad gentes. De ninguna manera la Iglesia puede restringir su trabajo pastoral al "mantenimiento ordinario" de aquellos que ya conocen el Evangelio de Cristo. El alcance misionero es un claro signo de la madurez de una comunidad eclesial. Los Padres también insistieron en que la Palabra de Dios es la verdad que salvara la cual hombres y mujeres de todas las edades necesitan escuchar. Por esta razón, debe ser explícitamente proclamada. La Iglesia debe salir a encontrarse con cada persona con la fuerza del Espíritu (cf. 1 Cor 2:5) y continuar su defensa profética del derecho y la libertad de las personas que escuchan la palabra de Dios, mientras buscan constantemente las formas más efectivas de proclamar esta palabra, incluso a riesgo de persecución. [319] La Iglesia se siente obligada a proclamar a cada hombre y mujer la palabra que salva (cf. Rom 1:14) ". (95)

EXHORTACIÓN APOSTÓLICA DEL PAPA FRANCISCO EVANGELII GAUDIUM, 2013“No podemos olvidar que la evangelización se trata principalmente de predicar el Evangelio a aquellos que no conocen a Jesucristo o que siempre lo han rechazado. Muchos de ellos buscan a Dios en silencio, guiados por un anhelo de ver su rostro, incluso en países de antigua tradición cristiana. Todos tienen derecho a recibir el Evangelio. Los cristianos tienen el deber de proclamar el Evangelio sin excluir a nadie." (14) “A veces parece que nuestro trabajo es infructuoso, pero la misión no es como una transacción comercial o inversión, o incluso una actividad humanitaria. No es un espectáculo donde contamos cuántas personas vienen como resultado de nuestra publicidad; Es algo mucho más profundo, que escapa a toda medida. Puede ser que el Señor use nuestros sacrificios para derramar bendiciones en otra parte del mundo que nunca visitaremos. El Espíritu Santo trabaja como quiere, cuando quiere y donde quiere; nos confiamos sin pretender ver resultados sorprendentes. Solo sabemos que nuestro compromiso es necesario.
