Vietnam Photo Analysis Name:
The Vietnam War was one of the most unpopular wars in U.S. History. The nation was bitterly divided between (hawks) people who thought the war was necessary to stop communism and (doves) people
who opposed the war entirely. The United States government eventually had to initiate a draft in order to
meet the demand of troops needed in Vietnam. Numerous people burned their draft cards and fled to Canada to avoid going to war against their will. The 26th amendment was passed during this time because
young people argued that they could be forced into military service but were still not allowed to vote.
26th Amendment: to the United States Constitution prohibits the states and the federal government from setting a voting age higher than eighteen. It was adopted in response to student activism against the
Vietnam War and to partially overrule the Supreme Court's decision in Oregon v. Mitchell. It was adopted on July 1, 1971. (If you can fight in a war why can’t you vote?)
Oregon v. Mitchell (1970): is a case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Congress could set voter age requirements for federal elections but not for state elections.
Questions
1. What different opinions did doves and hawks have about the war?
2. How did the 26th Amendment change the Oregon v. Mitchell ruling?
3. Would you have been a (dove) or a (hawk)? Why?
