Characters

Annabeth Fredrickson- 16, has long white hair, her mom recently died and has to

live with her father Calvin Laurence whom she has never met, likes to be called

Anna.

Becky- 17, Anna’s best friend, only person who calls Anna, Annie.

Mr Jovinski-53, Calvin’s gardener, he has a bushy mustache, creepy.

Miss Gareth-57, Calvin’s “maid”, chubby, wears hair up all the time.

Calvin Laurence-36, Anna’s Father, owns a creepy estate and is creepy for unknown

reasons, going bald, has a maid and a gardener, wears little round glasses.

Stranger #1- sits next to Anna on the bus to her father’s house.

Bus Driver- they drive the bus

Act I , Scene 1

Setting: A bus, going to Calvin’s house every now and then the bus shakes from

hitting rocks.

STRANGER #1

OOOOh! I love your hair, it’s so pretty, did you dye it?

ANNA

Oh uhh thanks, and no I didn’t dye it i was born with it.

STRANGER #1

How did that happen? Did your parents have white hair too?


ANNA

I honestly don’t know, my mom didn't have white hair she had red.

STRANGER #1

What about your dad?

ANNA

I have never met him before, I am actually going there now to live with him.

STANGER #1

What happened to your mom? And why haven't you met him before.

ANNA

(long pause)

I don’t know why I never met my father.

STRANGER #1

What’s your dads name?

(the bus stops)

ANNA

Calvin Laurence.

STRANGER #1

Thats that guy with the creepy mansion and garden. Anyway i have to go!

(she gets up and leaves the bus)

ANNA

I wonder what their problem was?

( emphasize their.)


BUS DRIVER

Now pulling in to Greenbriar Village.

ANNA

Looks like my stop.

(gathers stuff)

(the light fades out)

Act I, Scene 2

Setting: Calvin’s front door and his parlour

(Anna is about to knock on the dont door when she is greeted by Miss Gareth)

MISS GARETH

Oh hi Annabeth so nice to finally meet you.

( she makes room for Anna to walk in and then closes the door with Anna

inside the parlour)

ANNA

Ummm do I know you.

MISS GARETH

I used to see you when you were a child.

(she smiles)

ANNA

I lived with my mom when I was a kid.

MISS GARETH

We used to love seeing you out and about.


ANNA

Who is we?

MISS GARETH

(tilts her head)

Why, me, Mr Jovinski, and of course Calvin Ican’t believe you don’t remember..

ANNA

Who is Mr. Jovinski?

MISS GARETH

He is the gardener for Clavin’s house

ANNA

What do you do around here then?

MISS GARETH

Well I clean, cook, and pretty much everything else that doesn’t have to do with the

garden

ANNA

Soooo, you’re like the maid?

MISS GARETH

( uncomfortable silence )

I do not like that word.

ANNA

Oh sorry… anywho where is everyone else?

MISS GARETH


Mr. Jovinski is of course in the garden and Calvin is in the dining room.I go get him

now.

( Miss Gareth hurrys off stage right and Anna looks around and picks a few

thing up inspecting them. Calvin enters from the stage right)

CALVIN

Why hello there… daughter

ANNA

Uhh you know can call me by my name you know.

CALVIN

Yes I uhh know that Alllllllllexxx.

ANNA

My names not Alex (crossing her arms) do you even know my name?

(Miss Gareth comes over and whispers something in Calvins ear)

CALVIN

I know your name Annnnnna an-

ANNA

(cuts him off)

You only know my name because Miss Gareth just told you! That’s not very fatherly!

CALVIN

What do you mean fatherly?

ANNA

You are my FATHER. It’s in your job description to be fatherly.


CALVIN

You think I’m your Father?!?

ANNA

Who else would you be?

CALVIN

Ha Ha HA HAA. Definitely not YOUR father. Listen I was asked to take care of you if

anything bad happened to your parents.

ANNA

Who is my real father then?

MISS GARETH

Paul Anderson was your father

CALVIN

She wasn’t supposed to know!

MISS GARETH

(Shrinking down)

sorry...

ANNA

Why? Why would my mom choose you out of all people?

CALVIN

I never said it was your mom.

ANNA

My dad?!?

CALVIN


Wrong again. No more guesses, Now you must go to your room.

ANNA

Wait! I’m not done you can’t ju-

(She gets cut off by Miss Gareth coming over and dragging her off stage. The

lights fade out)

Act I, Scene 3

Setting: A day later. Anna’s new bedroom, almost everything in the room is pink. There

is a desk with a large laptop sitting open. Her best friend Becky walks in.

Becky

Hello?

ANNA

BECKY!!

BECKY

ANNIE!! What’s up girl?

ANNA

(Talking really fast)

So I met my father okay and i find out that he isn’t my father! His maid said that My

real father’s name is Paul Anderson!

BECKY


Hold on, so what you’re saying is that you have a maid??

ANNA

THAT'S WHAT YOU GOT OUT OF THIS CONVERSATION!

BECKY

Honey, you know I love me a good maid.

ANNA

Not a good time, Rebeca.

BECKY

Oooh you know I don't like that name.

ANNA

I just need you to be serious for a minute

BECKY

(goes over and hugs Anna)

I’m sorry girl I just thought you might need a laugh.

ANNA

(hugs back)

It’s okay I just don't know what to do anymore.

BECKY

Well, you found out what his name is right?

ANNA


Yeah, It’s Paul Anderson.

BECKY

You could look his name up on google, it might have something.

ANNA

That's a really good idea Bec.

(They both rush over to the computer on the desk)

BECKY

That is one dinosaur of a computer.

ANNA

I just hope it boots up fast.

(the computer makes a couple noises)

BECKY

Oh here it goes!

ANNA

Alright, let's do this.

Where’s google?

Oh here it is.

Alright. P A U L A N D E R S O N (say each letter like you are spelling it out.)

BECKY

(leans over and points to something on the computer) Could this be him?

ANNA

That guy is almost 50, I highly doubt that my father is older than my mom was. She

was only 32.


BECKY

...sorry…

ANNA

It’s okay, Now, let's get back to the task at hand

BECKY

Okay, sounds good.

ANNA

Maybe this is him?

BECKY

Oh my god, that guy totally looks like you! He even has white hair!

ANNA

Yeah, look there is a link to a newspaper.

Becky

CLICK ON IT!

` (very excitedly)

ANNA

Okay, hold your horses.

BECKY

NEVER!

(she moves Anna’s chair and starts clicking things on the computer)

WHAT!!

...oh Annie, I’m so sorry

ANNA

What are you talking about!?!

(Anna gets up and goes over to the computer)

WHAT NO!... it can’t…. He can’t be dead too.

(starts to sob)

BECKY

(gets up and hugs ANNA)

I’m so sorry, Ann, I’m here for you.

ANNA

(wipes some tears away from her face with her sleeve)

I… I just don’t understand… the same way as my mom… head injuries… who would do

this to them?

BECKY

(lets go of Anna and walks towards the computer again)

It says here that it happened in 2004.

ANNA

I was only 3 then.

(there is a knock on the door and Mr Jovinski enters)

MR JOVINSKI

Why are there tears?


BECKY

Uhh, who are you?

MR JOVINSKI

I am Mr Jovinski, the gardener.

BECKY

(turning to Anna)

You have a gardener too!?!? Anyone else I should know about?

ANNA

(sniffing and laughing)

No not any that I know of.

BECKY

Anyway, why are you here Mr Jovinski?

MR JOVINSKI

I was going to tell you two dinner is almost done.

BECKY

You knew I was here?

MR JOVINSKI

Every time someone enters this house I know about it…

BECKY

(under her breath)

Because that's not creepy

MR JOVINSKI


What did you just say?

BECKY

I sai-

ANNA

She said she’s hungry! We will be down in a minute, See you there!

MR JOVINSKI

But wai-

(Anna interrupts him and pushes him out the door)

BECKY

I’m glad he left he was creeping me out.

ANNA

Yeah, I don't know about him. I wish I could just live with you instead so I wouldn't

have to deal with all of these people.

BECKY

Hey what's that on the floor?

(she goes over to the door and picks up a old picture) It’s a picture!

ANNA

(walking over to Becky)

What’s the picture of?

Becky

It's a man with extremely white hair and a woman and they're holding a baby, wait!

That’s your mom!


ANNA

That must be me!

(pointing at the baby)

And I think that is the garden too! Is there anything written on the back?

BECKY

It says ‘Paul, Emily, And beautiful Annabeth’ It looks like they tried to scratch out

Paul.

That is really weird.

ANNA

I’ve never had a picture of my father, Where could it have come from?

BECKY

Maybe Mr Jovinski had it and dropped it?

ANNA

He must have, when I was pushing him out the door he probably dropped it.. I

wonder why he had it in the first place. Let me see the picture again.

(Becky hands her the picture and Anna turns it to the back)

Look at the handwriting, that's not my mom's and i doubt it's my dads, it is too fancy.

BECKY

Could it be Mr Jovinski’s handwriting?

ANNA


Maybe, I have never seen his handwriting. Also, why would someone cross out my

dad’s name?

BECKY

(leaning over Anna’s shoulder and pointing)

Look, The writing is in a black pen, The marks over Paul’s name are in blue pen, So,

they must have been done at different times.

ANNA

Why would someone do that? Unless…

BECKY

Unless what?

ANNA

Unless he scratched them out when he died, but what about my moms name…

BECKY

We need to find out what's up with this guy and why he would have this.

ANNA

He will be there at dinner.

BECKY

Then we will confront him there.

(lights fade out)

Act I Scene4


Setting: the dining room, there is a long table with 5 chairs at the very end. Calvin and

Mr Jovinski are seated and seem to be arguing, Miss Gareth brings in food. Anna and

Becky enter.

CALVIN

Why hello Annabeth and who might you be (gestures towards Becky)

BECKY

Uhh Im Becky, Are you Annie’s fake father?

CALVIN

I am neither fake or her father

ANNA

Then why was I told you were?

CALVIN

I don't know that was your mother's poor judgment

ANNA

Don’t talk about my mom like that!!

CALVIN

Hey I-

MR JOVINSKI

(He sees the picture gripped in Beckys hand, stands up, points, and interrupts

Calvin)

w-what's that?!?

BECKY


It's a picture we found in Anna’s bedroom.

MR JOVINSKI

(takes a step closer to her and opens his hand)

g-give that to me, THAT’S MINE!

BECKY

What the heck dude! I am NOT giving this to you, plus why do you have a picture of

Annie and her family

MR JOVINSKI

I-I don't have to tell you that. Just give it to me!!

(He starts walking toward Becky and Anna steps in front of her)

ANNA

Whoa what are you doing Mr Jovinski?!?

MR JOVINSKI

I need that picture! Just move out of the way, please Anna

ANNA

NO!

(she pushes him a stp back)

Tell me why you have a picture of my family and why you crossed my father’s name

out!!

MR JOVINSKI

I-I didn’t want to do it!

BECKY


Do what?

(she takes out her phone and starts to secretly record)

MR JOVINSKI

Kill them…

(Everyone is in shock, Anna and Becky take a few steps back)

ANNA

Wha-what are you talking about?!?

MR JOVINSKI

I-I told him he didn’t listen and he told me i was wrong.. I just go so mad.

ANNA

What did you tell him?

MR JOVINSKI

Your Emm was so nice, we were in love. He told me i was crazy

(starting to shout)

He said that she didnt love me back and he was going to show me. I don’t

know what came over me, I just lost it… we were in the garden next to the shed and i

saw the shovel.

BECKY

You killed him!?!

MR JOVINSKI


I didn’t want to!! I told him to go away so we could be together but he didn’t listen!

After that I ran away and stayed away for a long time. But then i saw Emm again and

all the feelings flooded back. I told her we could finally be together again but…

ANNA

But what! What did you do!?

MR JOVINSKI

She said

(mimicking a woman's voice)

I’m flattered but I’m not sure that would be a good idea, that we are too good of

friends and she still misses Paul. I got so angry i couldn’t see.

ANNA

YOU KILLED MY PARENTS!! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU

(she starts to back up more)

MR JOVINSKI

She was so pretty… you look just like her…

(he takes a step towards her)

ANNA

Don’t come any closer!


MR JOVINSKI

Maybe you and I…

(he starts to walk toward her and Miss Gareth comes on stage carrying a

taser and before he gets to Anna she shoots him and stops and falls to the ground

and passes out)

MISS GARETH

I can’t believe I was friends with him.

BECKY

( does something on her phone and brings it up to her ear)

Hello 911…

(lights fade out)

Act I Scene5

Setting: A few weeks later, At Becky's house! Anna is on the other side of their front

door holding some bags and a pillow. She knocks on the door.

BECKY

(Runs from the other side of the stage to the door and opens it) OH MY GOD I

missed you so much Annie!

(hugs her. Then lets her in and she sets her stuff down)

ANNA

I missed you too, I'm so glad your parents managed to get custody of me!

BECKY


My dad is such a good lawyer and i'm so glad we got you away from all those

creeps!

ANNA

Miss Gareth wasn’t so bad, she pretty much saved my life. I don't know what would

have happened if he got to me!

BECKY

Yeah I feel the same way, I hope she gets out of there too.

ANNA

At least Mr Jovinski is in jail now, I am so glad he is gone and will stay gone.

BECKY

SAAAAME girl. Now do you want so celebratory pizza from Tony’s down the street

ANNA

Of course let's go now!

(curtains close)
