NARRATIVE REPORT ON 2015 SUMMER JOURNALISM WORKSHOP
In the Philippines (Alkuino, 2013), the advancement of journalism starts in the campus, from
elementary to college. It is strengthened by the implementation of the Republic Act No. 7079,
known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991which declares that “the State shall uphold and
protect the freedom of the press even at the campus level and to promote the development and
growth of campus journalism as a means of strengthening ethical value encouraging critical and
creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal discipline of the Filipino youth.
In furtherance of RA 7079, the State shall undertake various programs and projects aimed to
promote responsible and free journalism.
The aforementioned legal basis is just one of the reasons that campus journalism should be a
part of the high school curriculum.
Just recently, Journalism (as an elective of Technology and Livelihood Education subject)
has been excluded in the Enhanced Basic Education program otherwise known as Kto12
curriculum. For this reason, the Grade 7 to Grade 9 students were no longer required to take the
Journalism subject, thus school paper advisers found it difficult to scout potential students in
campus journalism.
The following school year will be the implementation of Grade 10 of the new curriculum and
it will be a new burden for the SPA's to choose prospect student-writers considering the
aforementioned reasons. Thus, the proponents of this project is finding a way to pre-select
student journalists for the next school year.
Undeniably, Journalism Class is a laboratory of/for future professionals. Students holistic
development is honed up through the various activities conducted during division, district,
regional and national press conferences, contests, seminars, trainings by the different organizing
bodies/associations such as the Mandaluyong Association of Secondary School Paper Advisers
(MASSPA), Regional Association of Secondary School Paper Advisers (RASSPA), National
Association of School Paper Advisers (NASPA), Young Journalists Association of Mandaluyong
(YJAM), Palanca Editors' Guild, Regional Editors' Guild, National Editors' Guild, PUP Journ
Legacy, among others.
Just lately, Eulogio Rodriguez Integrated School has been included in the top five performing
schools in terms of journalism - placing 2nd runner up in Radio Broadcasting (English category)
and over-all 4th runner up in the Division Secondary Schools Press Conference and Contests
2014. That success could be a continuing legacy in terms of producing division, regional and
national winners. Thus, this project has been proposed to address the inspiring objectives of the
journalism society as a whole.
The activity aimed to discover and develop potential student-journalists. Specifically, it also
targets to impart students the basics of campus journalism, to enhance students' journalistic
writing, to develop camaraderie among student-journalists, and to encourage students to join the
campus editorial board
The activity was designed to discover and develop potential student-journalists who would be
prospect writers equipped with the following skills: basic journalistic writing skills like news
writing, feature writing, editorial writing, science writing, sports writing, copyreading and
headline writing, cartooning, photojournalism; knowledge on school paper management such as
desktop publishing and collaborative publishing; and experience in script writing and radio
broadcasting.
The activity was opened to top achievers of the class (section 1) from Grade 7 to Grade
10.
Student-participants were given lectures about the different writing categories. After
every lecture, they underwent a supervised workshops to apply what they have learned. There
was also an individual critiquing to ensure that each participant are kept on the right track.
In addition, participants were taught on how to prepare a winning campus paper wherein
they have come up with a newsletter output as part of their workshop. Furthermore, they were
also taught about news script writing leading to a radio broadcast presentation.
Finally, an awarding ceremony was conducted for the top performers in the mini press
conference held.
