Holiday Travelers

Many of our church family will be traveling to visit friends or relatives over the next few weeks. We may be expecting friends and relatives to visit us.

We pray they will have safe travels.

This season will be difficult for bereaved families and those of us who have family members in very serious

health. Please keep all of these in your prayers.

Digging a Great Hole

I am sure that many if not all of us traveling in and out of the DC area have probably had the chance to watch a skyscraper under construction. For the first few months or so of the project, all the workers do is make a great hole in the ground. To build a tall building by starting far below the surface level seems absurd, even crazy. But, as you would suspect, there is a good reason for the great hole. To build a mammoth building, it is first necessary to dig down until a strong foundation can be built, one that is capable of supporting the skyscraper.

A doghouse needs no foundation, and an ordinary house can be built on little more than a concrete slab. But a skyscraper, that’s different. It requires a deep and solid foundation. So it is in our Christian life. Our upward potential is totally dependent on the foundation underneath it.

Jesus said these words about the wise man “He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock” (Luke 6:48). So we can see it was that foundation (rock) that allowed the house to stand. Of course Paul told exactly who the foundation is “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1Cor. 3:11).
