SC Standards Standard 7.L.3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how the levels of

organization within organisms support the essential functions of life. 7.L.3B Conceptual Understanding: Multicellular organisms (including humans) are complex

systems with specialized cells that perform specific functions. Organs and organ systems are composed of cells that function to serve the needs of cells which in turn serve the needs of the organism.

7.L.3B.2: Construct explanations for how systems in the human body (including circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems) work together to support the essential life functions of the body.

o S.1A.6: Construct explanations of phenomena using (1) primary or secondary scientific evidence and models, (2) conclusions from scientific investigations, (3) predictions based on observations and measurements, or (4) data communicated in graphs, tables, or diagrams

Essential Learning Experiences: 1. It is essential that students construct explanations for how systems in the human body

(including circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems) work together to support the essential life functions of the body.

1

Page 2: €¦  · Web viewConstruct explanations for how systems in the human body (including circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems) work together

2. It is essential for the student to be able to understand the basic form and function of each of the following body systems as well as the interrelationships that occur between systems to ensure the survival of the organism.

Week 1 Lab Reaction Times:

Name(s): _______________________________________________________

Part 1: Read the following narrative and answer the questions

Narrator: Fouad and his brother Abdul were playing a game of “hand slap”. Fouad seems to win more games than Abdul.

Fouad and Abdul sit opposite each other playing and slaps

Fouad: I have such a good jump on you, Abdul!!! I know when you are going to move your hands before you do yourself. I have excellent reaction time.”

Abdul: Well, maybe you do win more than I do, but I think I have really good reaction time too.

Fouad: Well, you sure don’t show it in the game. If you can’t win at hand slaps, why do you think you have good reaction time?

Abdul: Because I am quick at other games. You only beat me at this one!

Fouad: I saw something in a magazine that will help us to decide who is faster. Do you wanna give it a try?

Abdul: Sure as long as it’s fair. What is the test?

Fouad: You have to get a meter stick first. One person holds it at the top and the other person opens his first finger and thumb apart at the bottom of the stick. The person who is holding the stick lets it go and the other person pinches his fingers together as soon as he notices the stick falling to try to stop it. How far down the stick travels measurers how fast the other person reacted? The less the stick falls, the quicker you grab it and the better your reaction time.

Abdul: That sounds cool!!! I think I can think of all kinds of reaction times we can measure with the test. Let’s get a meterstick and do it!!! But remember we have to make sure it’s a fair.

Fouad: Okay, we’ll make sure it’s fair but what do you mean by different kinds of reaction time?

Abdul: You’ll see. Maybe you won’t be the best at all of the different kinds.

1) What do you think will happen when you drop the ruler? Which partner do you think will have the fastest reaction time?__________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

2) Do you think that there would be a test that would better test reflexes? What would the test look like?__________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

Part 2: The Science behind the test. Read the following passage and answer the questions.

The experiment tests how long it takes the brain to translate visual information (falling ruler) into your voluntary (or conscious) motor commands and actions (grasping finger movements) that lead to the ruler being caught.

15

Page 16: €¦  · Web viewConstruct explanations for how systems in the human body (including circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems) work together

The shorter the time, the faster your reactions.…. that’s if you were paying attention in the first place! Indeed, practice specifically affects the ‘associative centres’ in the brain, so that you can respond faster to what’s happening in your visual world. The flow of information along the ‘visual’ and ‘motor’ nerve pathways is relatively constant even with lots of practice. It all comes down to ‘attention’ or ‘…being on the ball!’

Part 3: Doing the test.

INSTRUCTIONS

i) Get a 30cm ruler…

ii) One person holds the ruler near the 30cm mark and lets it hang vertically…

iii) The other person places their thumb and index finger either side of the 0cm mark ready to catch it when it falls - their fingers shouldn’t touch the ruler.

iv) Without warning the person holding the ruler lets go and the subject tries to catch the ruler as soon as possible.[Hint: To prevent guessing, vary the time before letting go of the ruler].

v) The level (in cm) just above the subject’s first finger where the ruler was caught is recorded.

vi) The same person is tested 5 times and then calculate the mean average of their results (add all five numbers together and then divide by five).

viii) Now swap over and test your partner.

Part 6: Time to Experiment

After you’ve tested yourself, why not experiment further. Here’s a few suggestions, do reaction times vary:

for people of different ages (children versus adults)? if you use your dominant hand versus non-dominant hand? if you are tired or alert? for men or women? depending on your mood? after an alcoholic drink?

Part 7: Answers generally, the older you are the longer your reaction time (that ruler keeps hitting my foot!) as you might expect, the dominant hand has a faster reaction time. in ‘Catch the ruler’, it helps to pay attention – so being alert is a great asset. who is faster ‘men or women’? …you tell me? mood affects attention and therefore reaction times. alcohol greatly increases reaction times.

4. Look at the attachment points for the tendons of the bicep. Use the simple diagram to draw in the bicep. Label the origin (immovable) and insertion point (movable) for the bicep. When the bicep contracts, which way will the bone move? Indicate this on the diagram.

5. By pulling on the bicep muscle you are simulating a muscle contraction. Describe how the shape of a muscle changes when it contracts and when it is relaxed. ___________________________________________________________________________

6. Muscles are always found in pairs, one on each side of the bone. Imagine the triceps was cut. How would that change the ability to move the wing? Use your observations from looking at the triceps and biceps to explain what would happen. Why is it important to have both pairs of muscles working? ___________________________________________________________________________

Chicken Wing DissectionInstructions

FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY, DO NOT SKIP STEPS!

FIRST DISSECTOR: ____________________

1. Use your fingers to peel the skin away from the muscle near the upper wing.

2. Now, using the tweezers and razor, carefully remove all of the skin except the skin on the wing tip. Be careful not to cut the tendons or ligament.

3. Carefully examine the muscles and make observations in the space provided. (Write response to Lab Question #1 and 2)

4. Gently try to pull a muscle from the bone. Does it come off? Try to find out why. (Write response to Lab Question #3 and 4)STOP AND SWITCH ROLES. NEW DISSECTOR: ____________________

5. Find the biceps and use your fingers to gently pull the bicep. Look at how the wing moves. Now, find the triceps and use your fingers to gently pull on the triceps. Take turns pulling back and forth on the bicep and tricep muscles and observe the movement that happens when a specific muscle is pulled. (Write response to Lab Question #5 and 6)STOP AND ALL GROUP MEMBERS MAKE AN OBSERVRATION DRAWING.

6. Make an observational drawing of your chicken wing in the space provided. Check rubric to be sure it is complete. (Write response to Lab Question #7)SWITCH ROLES. NEW DISSECTOR: ____________________

7. Remove the tricep by cutting the tendons connecting it to the bones. Pull on the bicep and see how removing the tricep affects your ability to move the wing.

8. Locate the joint between the upper and lower wing. Observe the cartilage that covers the ends of each bone at the joint. (Write response to Lab Question #8)SWITCH ROLES. NEW DISSECTOR: ____________________

9. Break one of the two lower wing bones. Examine the broken bone and observe the inside of the bone. (Write response to Lab Question #9)

10. When everyone is done observing, follow instructions on how to safely dispose of razor blades and dissection materials.
