March 2015
Dear Friends,My pups and I have not been getting out for our daily walks as we do in the warmer weather. Last year, I slipped on the ice at the park, and had a badly sprained hand and a sore leg for a number of days. I counted my blessings that I didn’t break the wrist or hand, so this year I’m being very careful as to when we walk and where. One recent afternoon, the sun popped through the clouds, and I decided it was time to get out for a walk and we headed off to Rockwell Park. The snow was deep and large ice patches covered many parts of the parking lot so our walking options were slim, but we got out anyway. Needless to say, we were the only ones at the park. It was so quiet!
The snow-covered and ice-packed park was beautiful. As I walked the pups along a patch of packed snow, the silence was suddenly broken by the movement of the river that continues to flow through the iced banks of the park. As much as it seemed that the park was frozen over, closed for the season, there it was before us: life flowing through the park just as it had before the snow fell and the ice covered our paths.
Maybe you’re feeling frozen over now, closed for the season too! Because of God’s blessed presence in our lives, we are never dead, always filled with life. I pray that in this season of Lent you sense the Spirit of God working, creating in you. No matter what you face today, wherever you travel, be free to let the Spirit of God flow through your life and bring you to a new and blessed place at Easter. Let’s all have a blessed Lent!

In Our Thoughts and Prayers…
We received word that Marilyn McCabe passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 in Oak Hill, Florida. Her parents were Jack and Mae McCabe. No other information was available.
COULD YOU USE A STEPHEN MINISTER
IN YOUR LIFE?Stephen Ministers offer one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister provides care to one person at a time,
meeting with that person once a week for about an hour.
Congregation members, friends and family can receive care from a Stephen Minister when struggling through a difficult time in life while experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or some other life crisis.
It’s important to know that: The relationship between a care receiver and a Stephen Minister is confidential.
Men are matched with men; women with women.
When a care receiver’s needs exceed what a Stephen Minister can provide, the Stephen Ministry team can help you find professional help or other community resources.
If you, (or someone you know) are going through a difficult time and think you could use a Stephen
Julie Constantine, Jonah Cutter, The Taylor and Amadio Family, Bonnie Maskery, Shirley Nelson, Desiree Szydlo, Dee Brouseau, Carl Aspland, Barbara Emanuelson, Elsie Lyons, Edward Coloske, and others who have needs of which we may not be aware.
If you wish to be listed in the bulletin and newsletter for prayers, please call the church office at 860-584-0529 or e-mail us at: [email protected].
If you wish to relate prayer needs to the prayer chain, please call Phyllis Petit at 860-589-6059 or Mernie Whitcomb at 860-583-5373, or e-mail Pastor Laura at [email protected]. Please keep your call brief, and be aware of the privacy rights of the person(s) for whom you are requesting prayers.

Thank you LettersDear Asbury Family, Your Christmas Gift Bag was very much appreciated. The gloves, puzzles, crossword book and other items were such a wonderful surprise. Also, the poinsettia plant from the church was lovely…and is STILL red and beautiful! The kindness of Asbury will always be remembered. Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.
Laura and Fred Towle
Dear Asbury UMC, Thank you for taking part in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF campaign. Your gift ensures that UNICEF can make a better world for the world’s most vulnerable children. We wish you all the best and look forward to your ongoing partnership in the coming years.
Caryl M. SternPresident & CEO
Dear Friends, On behalf of all of us at St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Bristol, I would like to thank you for your donation of laundry detergent, toilet paper and baby food.
Sincerely,Phillip J. Lysiak
Executive Director
A BIG thank you to the Senior Fellowship Group who recently purchased new hymn boards for the Sanctuary. The old ones had sustained water damage over the years, and the numbers were badly frayed. They have been placed in the Sanctuary (thanks to Wayne Bacon), and will be used by many generations to come. Again, thank you to the Senior Fellowship for all the things you do for Asbury.
The deadline for the April Circuit Rider is Sunday, March 15th.
Please leave all articles in the mailbox in the church office

Offering Report
For the first six Sundays of 2015, our Envelope Offering total is $18,884. That's a weekly average of $3,147.
For the first six Sundays of last year, the total was $22,177. That was a weekly average of $3,696.
The 2015 total represents a decrease of $3,293. The weather may be partly the cause, but it is not good.
We have many bills to pay. Please bring your 2015 offering up to date as soon as possible. Also, please remember to use your special Lenten envelopes. These extra offerings can help offset shortages elsewhere.
The 3rd Annual Asbury Women’s Retreat will be held on
Saturday, May 2nd
At the Wisdom House in Litchfield, CT(car-pooling will be available
leaving Asbury parking lot at 8 a.m.)Cost: $40.00 includes lunch
From 9:00 am – 3:00 pmThe topic of the day is an invitation to mindfulness. The quality of care you give to others is related to the quality of care you give yourself. Topics to be explored will include: mindful meditation, stress management, handling strong emotions, mindful eating, gratitude practice, and prayer of loving kindness. The speaker will be Sharon Gutterman, Ph.D.
After the retreat Asbury participants will also have the option to take a short walk through Lourdes in Litchfield as well as a light dinner in Litchfield Center.
You are encouraged to register early as these day retreats fill up quickly. Please speak to Stacey Rich, Karna Baumberger, Karen Cranford, Melissa Gray or Donna Frank for more information.
As of 2/15/15 here's what has come in through the offering plate in just three Sundays: $1,870 and when matching funds are added that makes a total of $3,740. The current Parsonage Mortgage balance is $9,755.15. This $3,740 and another $110.74 from Wendy's would bring the mortgage balance down to $5,904.41. How cool is this!!!
To get in on the band wagon and be a part of this effort to pay off the mortgage, just make your check payable to Asbury and note on the memo part of your check and on your envelope that the money is to be applied against the Parsonage Mortgage Principal Reduction. Cash is readily accepted as well. And your donation will be doubled with matching funds! What a neat and simple way to pay off this mortgage--and quickly.
ASBURY CLEAN UP FOR EASTER
On Saturday March 28th, Palm Saturday, we on the Board of Trustees will gather to get the grounds, and maybe even the indoors spruced up for Easter. We encourage everyone to come and help! We will gather at 8 am and if last fall is any indication, the assistance from the Boy and Girl Scouts will make the work a lot easier! Bring rakes, brooms, and look forward to having fellowship too
SPPR is looking to hire a Nursery Care Coordinator for both the 8:30 and 10:00 am services each week starting as soon as possible.

A society has been organized in the place christened “Young Peoples Sociable” (so called, I suppose, because its members are learning to be sociable as well as industrious) for the laudable object of raising funds for the church – and as an entering wedge to set the thing in motion, they propose to employ Prof. Hibbard to give one of his popular readings some time next week. At the regular session of the Sabbath School on Sunday last, officers were elected as follows: C.A. Reynolds, Superintendent, Levi Stone, Assistant Superintendent, C.A. Bingham, Secretary, and L. Atwater, Librarian
March 29, 1930The Parent-Teacher night held by Asbury M. E. Church School was largely attended by parents and friends. A fine program, in charge of Mrs. Harry Law, was enjoyed. After the entertainment, children’s games were indulged in – chiefly by adults. The winners of some of the games were: Name contest, Mr. Harry Law; marbles, Mr. Lewis Hart; hop scotch, Mrs., Harry Law; Going to Jerusalem, Rev. Mr. Davis. Miss Mamre Bunnell was in charge of refreshments which were served later in the evening.
March 3, 1930
The Asbury Boys’ Club will be reorganized with an election of officers Saturday evening, March 8 at 7 o’clock. Any boy of nine years or over, up to 12 or 13 is invited to attend this meeting and register as a member. The club will hold meetings until summer every week.
March 18, 1875
The donation rendered to Rev. N.L. Porter last Thursday evening amounted to about seventy-five dollars. Had the gathering of his numerous friends taken place in the basement of the church instead of the parsonage, the amount would probably have been quadrupled.
We regret to announce that Rev. N.L. Porter was suddenly brought low Tuesday evening with a dangerous disease affecting the brain and spine. At this hour of writing his physician deems his condition critical. (Ed. Note – An item on April 1st reports his recovery, though subsequent reports indicate that the illness still continued and he was unable to occupy the pulpit.)
March 24, 1873
The annual election of the officers of the M.E.S.S. took place last Sabbath and resulted in the re-election of the old board…..Our Sunday School is in a prosperous condition, numbers about 150 scholars, 18 teachers, 6 large Bible Classes, and are using the “International Series of Lessons.”
This information was compiled by Muriel Gardner and was in the February 1980 Circuit Rider. The information is courtesy of the Bristol Press and the Public Library. It is reproduced as it was originally presented.
If you have…any pictures or documents from Asbury’s past, please contact Karren Grayson.
Don’t forget…To check out the display cases and boards in the Narthex. Karren changes them frequently, and are a wonderful way to connect with the past.
Yesterdays at Asbury
Karren Grayson, Asbury’s Historian will be publishing each month in the newsletter a series entitled, “Yesterdays at Asbury”. It is a recollection of our history from the Bristol Press and the Bristol Library. The information was first collected as part of the 125th Anniversary celebration.
March 21, 1955Miss Clara Beach of Garden Street, who spent 34 years in the missionary field in India, will be guest speaker at the Women’s Society of Christian Service Auxiliary meeting at Asbury Methodist Church this evening at 7:45 o’clock. Her subject will be “India” and members are to bring package mixtures of food to be sent to India.
Additional entertainment will be the showing of slides of the West Haven Home for the Aged. Mrs. Ernest Fiske will be the devotional leader and Mrs. Clarence Peterson and Mrs. Norman Webster will be hostesses.
CAN YOU HELP?
Year end giving statements are complete and
available for you to pick up in the Narthex.
Just a reminder to all committee treasurers to bring your 2014 records and checking and savings passbooks to the church office for auditing.
