A Note From President Janie

My blessings are countless. However, among my greatest blessings is my freedom. This is a blessing to which I owe a great debt of gratitude to our heroes – the men and women of our armed forces.

Yes, we owe an incredible debt of gratitude to the men and women of our armed forces. I just took a moment to say thank you, via the USO’s website. I hope you will do the same. You can send a thank you email to our protectors of freedom at the link (http://action.uso.org).

May is a patriotic month; therefore, the KARW Americanism Committee did something special to thank our veterans. We organized a golf tournament at Walden Country Club. The lady golfers asked a veteran to join them on the golf course. We played games on the Par 3s to raise money for our female pregnant veterans. The proceeds went to the Littlest Patriot Program which was founded by a KARW member Connie Kindle. Please bring baby items to the General Meeting. Additionally, we are planning and organizing the following Americanism activities for our heroes: cooking hamburgers, placing flags at the cemetery, a baby shower for our pregnant veterans, a golf tournament to benefit USO, arts and crafts at VA hospital, registering voters, and entering a float at the 4th of July parade.

Please take a moment to say thank you to our military men and women.

Together we will turn Harris County RED!

KARW Float in the 4th of July ParadeAll Veterans and Republican Elected Officials are Welcomed

Last year’s 4th of July parade was so much fun. Pictured above are some KARW members, elected officials, veterans, and policemen. We pray that you will be able to join us this year.

KARW will continue the tradition of participating in the Kingwood Civic Club July 4th parade and at the same time get ready for the 2018 elections by registering new voters. We cordially invite veterans and their families to join us in this fun filled event. The elected officials will be participating as well. The theme’s float will be “Republican Women Love Our Troops” – “Republicans Care About YOU”. All interested veterans, contact Janie Branham at [email protected].

The gift cards donated by the KARW membership will be issued to each veteran that participates in the parade line-up. The gift card symbolizes that we will always remember that freedom isn’t free and that those who are willing to pay the price by taking time away from their families, and bravely confronting the endless dangers of the battleground, are KARW’s truest heroes. We will also hand out hard candy that has been donated by the members.

We want to thank the KARW Parade Committee for planning and organizing this event: Janet Huberty, Tom Huberty, Casey Christman, Janie & David Branham, Pat and Rick Morlen, Halene Crossman, Luz Robellar, Connie Kindle, Daniela Sumbera, Lanelle Johnston, M’liss and Charles Painter, Pamela McEver, Donna LaVoie, Nancy Foisner, and Rudy Fonseca.

KARW works very closely with the Kingwood High School teacher sponsor Spencer Conley. Mr. Conley sponsors the Kingwood HS Teen Aged Republican Club.

Spencer was born in England and moved to New York as an infant. Spencer graduated from SUNY Brockport NY with a BS in Mathematics. He earned his Master of Education from Texas Southern. He has taught High School math for the past 27 years with 20 of them being in the Humble ISD. Spencer is another reason that we are blessed to live in the Humble Independent School District.

Superintendent Elizabeth FagenHumble ISD Mission, Vision, District Goals

Dr. Fagen was the April keynote speaker at the KARW General Meeting. She shared the district’s mission, vision, and district goals. Often she surveys the parents and meets with companies to gather input regarding the direction the district needs to take.

As stated in the Humble ISD website,

MISSION STATEMENT: Our purpose, in partnership with families and community, is to develop each child intellectually, artistically, emotionally, physically, and socially so that all students are life-long learners, complex thinkers, responsible global citizens and effective communicators.

VISION STATEMENT:We envision schools where students and staff are enthusiastically engaged in learning within local and virtual environments. We see schools that encourage collaboration and cultivate a sense of belonging. We see learning standards that are rigorous and relevant. We see learning standards that inspire creativity and problem solving. Ultimately, we see schools that prepare students for many paths and that empower them with skills to successfully live in a rapidly changing world.

DISTRICT GOALS:The Humble ISD Board of Trustees adopted four district goals to achieve the mission and vision.

District Goal 1: Prepare students to be college and career ready

District Goal 2: Provide quality service to internal and external customers

District Goal 3: Provide a quality work environment so every employee can perform at the highest levels

District Goal 4: Create efficiencies at all levels of the organization

For the past few years, KARW has sponsored several golf holes to support the Kingwood Fallen Heroes Memorial Golf Tournament. The event was held on April 29, 2017, at the Clubs of Kingwood. This event honored three Kingwood Fallen Heroes, SGT. Brandon C. Bury, LANCE CPL. Luke C. Yepsen, and SGT. William Meeuwsen. These three men were taken from us while serving in combat. This event also benefited Hope for the Warriors, Blue Star Mothers, and Operation Military Embrace. These three charities support our military and their families. To help ensure fallen heroes are not forgotten, the Kingwood Fallen Heroes, in conjunction with the Rolling Thunder, jointly fund scholarships each year at Kingwood High School in each of the fallen soldiers' names. This year's recipients were Daisy Johnston, who will attend the University of Texas at Austin; Joshua Graves, who will attend Texas A&M; and Markus Schweiger, who will attend the University of Tulsa this fall.

Kingwood Area Republican Women Foster Literacy

The Kingwood Area Republican Women maintain their constant fight for literacy by donating eight books to the Kingwood Library. Above from left to right are Terice Richards, Bette Newton, President Dr. Janie Branham, Ryan Fennell, Nancy Fulton, and M’Liss Painter.

“In a continuing effort to promote literacy in the community the Kingwood Area Republican Women purchased eight Barbara Bush Literacy Library Project (BBLLP) books to donate to the Kingwood Library in May.

These books, donated in the names of eight KARW members, foster good values and the importance of personal responsibility to the community, said Nancy Fulton KARW Literacy Chairman.

“Possessing the ability to read and write is fundamental.  It makes learning possible, inevitable, and infinite.  For this reason, fostering literacy has long been a priority of KARW.  In fact, the Barbara Bush Literacy Library Project has been developed to achieve this goal." said KARW Literacy Chair Nancy Fulton.

Once this collection of books is processed by the library, they will be available to check out. KARW donated the books with the hope that children of all ages will enjoy the books, learn from them, and notice the dedications on the Barbara Bush bookplates in the front of each book.

Listed below are the titles of the books and the individuals that were honored for their outstanding contributions to the community:

1 - First Families:  The Impact of the White House on Their Lives by Bonnie Angelo was donated in honor of KARW President Dr. Janie Branham.2- What Are the Three Branches of the Government? by Benjamin Richmond was donated in honor of KARW Vice- President Patricia Morlen. 3 - How Elections Work by Jeanne Marie Ford was donated in honor of KARW Corresponding Secretary Daniela Sumbera.4 - How the Executive Branch Works by Maddie Spaldingwas donated in honor of KARW Treasurer Regina Thompson.5 - How the Government Works by Jeanne Marie Ford was donated in honor of KARW Secretary Tracy Hobson.6 - How the Judicial Branch Works by Naomi Kruegerwas donated in honor of KARW Special Events Chair Colleen Rose.7 - Presidential Elections and Other Cool Facts by Syl Sobelwas donated in honor of KARW Second Vice-President Pamela McEver.8 - We the People:  The Constitution of the United States by Peter Spier was donated in honor of KARW Americanism Chair Luz Rebollar.

“KARW has always focused on improving the community and making lives better for everyone in the Kingwood area. While a big part of our mission is political in nature we believe that taking care of those in need is just as important. This book donation is part of our continuous effort to do that.” said KARW President Dr. Janie Branham.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy was founded by our former first lady on March 6, 1989. Since that time the foundation has awarded nearly $20 million to build or expand over six hundred family literacy programs in forty-seven states.

Local clubs are encouraged to donate at least ten (10) books to a local library, school, or shelter in support of the BBLLP. The TFRW Literacy Chair will provide BBLLP bookplates to the local clubs.

The National Federation of Republican Women established the Maime Eisenhower Library Project (MELP) in 1961 to honor the former First Lady. The purpose is to foster Republican philosophy and ideas through the donation of subject related books and videos to libraries, schools, or other institutions. Local clubs are encouraged to donate at least one book from the official MELP list. TFRW Literacy Chair will provide MELP bookplates to the local clubs in order that the bookplates may be placed in the books before they are donated.

The TFRW Dictionary Project was started with the goal of providing third grade students with their own personal dictionary. This is a popular project nationwide. If the schools in your area are already being provided for, consider adopting a school in a low income or minority neighborhood nearby. The history and information on how to implement the project and secure book ordering is located at www.dictionaryproject.org.

Local clubs are encouraged to make a commitment to provide dictionaries to at least one school for two or more years. Local clubs provide their own bookplates. TFRW provides examples of an introductory letter to school administration, bookplate, presentation guidelines, press release and tips from successful clubs. A donation reporting form is also provided.

KARW and the Walden on Lake Houston Ladies Golf Association teamed up on May 7 to support the Little Patriots program in a Sadie Hawkins Golf Tournament at

Walden Country Club. The Little Patriots program supports pregnant veterans by providing a diaper bag filled with new items for their baby. The items included onesies, baby blankets, baby bottles, pacifiers, lotion, baby powder, burp clothes and bibs. A card of thanks was included with every bag. KARW member Connie Kindle started the Little Patriots program for the Veterans Administration Hospital.

KARW President Janie Branham, a member of the Walden Ladies Golf Association, planned and organized the tournament which required the women participants to invite a veteran to be their golfing partner. This event also honored the men and women who died for our freedom, and thanked the military veterans and their families for the many sacrifices they made to keep America free and for save guarding our precious liberties that are so sacred.

KARW donates baby items for pregnant veterans on a monthly basis. The KARW members involved with the golf tournament were: Luz Robellar, Connie Kindle, Daniela Sumbera, Linda Dixon, Patricia Morlen, Dr. Rick Morlen, Dr. David Branham, and Dr. Janie Branham. Daniela Sumbera, a Keller Williams Realtor, secured a sponsor (Spectrum Graphics) to pay for the VA’s Little Patriot’s Program banner as part of the fundraising efforts.
