Introduction to Studio: Research

Brief: The class is creating a resource folder/workbook, which will contain six researched studio based images. These images will include three portraits and three still life studio based images. Each of these images descriptions must include aspects of lighting, composition, techniques used in images, content, style, content and visual quality of each choose image. Also each image much link to Assessment two, which will include planning of each of shoots you will take for photographs in Still Life.

Studio Photograph Research – Image 1:

Winston Churchill This photograph of Winston Churchill was taken by the famous Turkish photographer ‘Yusuf Karsh’. Yusuf Karsh was well known for his photograph work of ‘The Queen’, ‘Albert Einstein’, ‘John F. Kennedy’, ‘Andy Warhol’, ‘Grace Kelly’, ‘Winston Churchill’ and many more famous celebrities and well known people.Yusuf Karsh was born in Mardin, Ottoman Turkey on December 23rd 1908 and died in Boston, Massachusetts USA on July 13th 2002. His remains are in Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa, Canada.

This photograph of Winston Churchill was taken by Yusuf Karsh, when Churchill was Prime Minister of United Kingdom during World War II in 1941. It was taken in Ottawa Parliament Buildings in Canada in 1941. Churchill

was annoyed by Yusuf Karsh during this photograph shoot, as Churchill wasn’t allowed to smoke his cigars. Today this photograph widely is considered to be one of most famous photographs to ever be taken.

The photograph could of been taken during the day or at night, but don’t know exactly what time it was taken at, but if it was night, then their wouldn’t be any window light as windows would of been boarded up during The World War II to stop German bombers knowing there were people there so could be easy for them to bomb that area of city or town ect. There is a lot of deep depth of field on Winston Churchill but background of photograph is shallow depth of field. In the background yon can see a wooden boarded background but kind of is a bit blurred. The lighting is coming from right hand side of the photo ‘Left hand side if you were Churchill’ as there is shadows going down left hand side of Churchill’s face ‘Right side if you were Churchill’ and background is darker down same side. I think they’re high key tones in this photograph as you can see Winston Churchill’s face clearly, but I think the lighting has been place certain direction on side to give shadows down one side of his face and to give the background a good feel. As coloured cameras weren’t around back then and modern technology with Photoshop I think this photograph was taken with a vintage camera and photograph was taken with a bright bulb and then produced in a dark room.

Overall for photograph of Prime Minster of United Kingdom taken in Ottawa Parliament in Canada during World War II has came out in really good quality considering half of the world was being bombed during this time by Nazi Germans under Adolf Hitler’s commands at this time. It’s great to see Winston Churchill was defending his country and got United Kingdom through this war, I think this why this photograph has became one most famous photographs in the world ever as Churchill became a icon in history for what he did for United Kingdom during the war. Overall I think this many photographs by Yusuf Karsh are pretty awesome.

Studio Photograph Research – Image 2:

Glenn Close

This photograph of Glenn Close was taken by well known photographer ‘Mary Ellen Mark’. Mary Ellen Mark is well known for photography work of ‘Tim Burton’, ‘Johnny Depp’, ‘Robert Downey Jr.’, ‘Glenn Close’ and many more well known people. She also famous for her New York City prints around the Big Apple.

Mary Ellen Mark was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on March 20th 1940, she is still living at aged 74 along with husband, ‘Martin Bell’ who is a film director and is famous for directing ‘Streetwise’ and ‘American Heart’. Marry Ellen Mark has one various awards, but most famous she has won was ‘Robert F. Kennedy

Journalism Award, “Mother Theresa”, life in 1980’ this was her first award and she has won more awards in ‘Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award’.

This photograph of Glenn Close was taken by Mary Ellen King in Manhattan, New York City in 1997. This photo shoot of Glenn Close was a promotion to promote her being in 101 Dalmatians film, as her character ‘Cruella de Vil’ in film wore a lot of fur, mainly colours of a Dalmatian dog.. Black and white ect.

This photograph was taken during the day in a Studio in Manhattan, New York City in 1997. There is a lot of deep depth of field on Glenn Close around her, with background of photograph which is shallow depth of field as background is white background but photograph has been taken in black and white. The lighting is coming from the right hand side of the photo ‘left hand side if you were Glenn Close’ as theirs small amount of shadows going down one side of cheek of Glenn Close’s face on left hand side ‘right hand if you were Glenn Close’, there’s also small amount of shadows on her hands to. I think Mary Ellen Mark has used more one key light as well as soft box or a umbrella to give overall effect in the photograph of Glenn Close. I think photograph was taken with new technology camera in late 19th Century, either a Bridge Camera or DSLR of some sort, don’t exactly know myself to be honest. Overall for a photograph of Glenn Close taken in Manhattan, New York City has

came out in really good quality, considering in 19th Century new modern technology was just coming out. Also with this type of photograph of Glenn Close, it’s promoting ‘Walt Disney’s 101 Dalmatians’ as Glenn is wearing fur in the photograph and her character ‘Cruella de VII’ wears fur in the movie. Overall Mary Ellen Mark produces some amazing photographs.

Nicolas Ghesquiere

This photograph of Nicolas Ghesquiere was taken by famous Italian fashion photographer ‘Paolo Roversi’. Paolo Roversi is a well known fashion photographer for famous magazines such as ‘Vogue’, ‘Elle’ and other magazines.

Paolo Roversi was born in Ravenna, Italy in 1947. He now works and lives in Paris, France. Roversi became interested in photography, when him and his family went for a family vacation in Spain in 1964.

This photograph of Nicolas Ghesquiere was taken by Paolo Roversi, the location of the photograph is unknown. All I know is the photograph was taken some time in months of January to September in 2014. The photography shoot was for a

upcoming magazine shoot for Vogue for October 2014 edition. It was taken in black and white as Paolo Roversi uses black and white photographs mostly for magazines.

I think this photograph was taken during the day in a studio somewhere, most likely Paris I’m guessing as that where Paolo Roversi lives and works. This photograph has interesting theme to it, I don’t know what to say about depth of field in this photograph as it hard to make out with it being in black and white, the shadows and background at model is standing in front of. The lighting in this photograph is from one high key light from above, shining on model in centre front nearer the right of model in the photograph (if you were model would be left side of you), the lighting is also high because if it was low you would see more shadows. They’re a lot of shadows in this photography, going down arms, his t-shirt, you can hardly see his trousers and shadows of himself on background, and the background also majority black white makes him stand out with one bright white light. I don’t know what type of camera the photographer has used, but probably be a DSLR with certain length of lenses.

Overall for a photograph for Vogue Magazine, the photograph in my eyes has come out very well and I like how model and background stands out well and catches your eye. After looking at some of Paolo Roverski photograph work, some of photographs are pretty awesome.

Still-Life Photograph Research – Image 1:

French Fries with Cigarettes

This still life photograph of French fries and a lilt cigarette was taken by a still life commercial New York based photographer called ‘Sam Kaplan’.Sam Kaplan isn’t really a well-known photographer but he has produced a lot of awesome still life photographs. I think he was born in New York, USA but I don’t know which year or how old he is, all I know is he lives and works in New York City right now.

Sam Kaplan was probably born in New York, USA and lives and works in city right now, he is a commercial still

life photographer and isn’t really well known but produces some cracking photographs. Looking on his website he as has won some awards. He has won DN’s 30 new and Emerging Photographers to Watch2012, American Photograph 28-Chosen, PDN Photo Annual 2012 and American Photography 29-Chosen.

I think this still photograph was taken in day light in a studio somewhere in New York City, USA. I don’t know when but looking at some of awards at Sam Kaplan has won, the photograph been taken between 2012 and now in 2014. This photograph is really interesting due to interesting effects which have been used. The smoke coming from the cigarette in the chips is really cool and been captured really well. There is a lot of deep depth of field in the photography, especially on the fries to make them stand out and catch the viewer’s eyes, also with the cigarette. Smoke coming from the cigarette also suggests something either about French fries or is suggesting something to cigarette smokers. I like the blue background which has been used, as makes the French fries and cigarette come out to viewer’s eyes. Also the vignette effect on the corners of the photograph makes the photograph really cool to. The theme in the photograph is food and this good example of food.

The lighting in the photograph is from one high key light above, shining on the cup of French fries and lilt cigarette. I think there been few reflectors used to make the 3D shape and shadows of French fries and cup holding them in. I think might be shining little bit to right on the photograph (left if you were the French fries).They’re some shadows in the photograph, mainly around the French fries, and smoke coming off the cigarette. The background also has shadows where the light isn’t shining. I think the photographer has used DSLR camera to take this photograph and took it close up.

Overall for a photograph for still life, the photograph in my eyes has come out very well and I like how all effects been used have made the photograph catch your eye and after looking at some of Sam Kaplan’s work on his website, he produces some wicked photography in still life.

Vegetables

This is a still life photograph of what looks like to be is big thick carrots or parsnips was taken by the famous English vegetable and fruit still life and gardener photographer ‘Charles Jones’. Charles Jones is known vegetable, fruit still life photographer in England for taking his black and white photographs between late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Charles Jones was from England and he was born in 1866 in Wolverhampton and died on 15th November 1959 in Lincolnshire, England at aged 92.From what I read about Charles Jones, he only worked at several private estates and lived in England all his life.

photographer in Vegetables, Fruit and Garden area of photography. He didn’t win any awards, but his photography nowadays are recognised

I don’t know when this photograph was taken, but looks like been taken in a mini studio somewhere in England. The photograph really stands out well with black carrots or parsnips on a white background, but speaking of that they only had black and white photography back in that time. I think the photograph could have been captured better, but I am not going to complain about a photograph taken back in late 1800’s or early 1900’s. With the background behind the carrots or parsnips, it does capture the viewer’s eyes and also a good example of food, i.e. ‘vegetables’.

The lighting in the photograph is poorly but can’t complain about era at photograph was taken in and what type of materials the photographer had back then. Can’t really say much about the lighting apart from it was very basic. Think the photographer has used DSLR camera to take this photograph and took it close up. They’re some shadows going around sides of carrots or parsnips as well as tone colours on them themselves.

Overall for a photograph for still life back then, the photograph is okay but could be better, but still captures the viewer’s ideas. Looking at some other work by Charles Jones, all his work looks similar but some good examples of still life in vegetables.

Still-Life Photograph Research – Image 3Living Room Area

This still life photograph is a living room set, there isn’t a photographer for this photograph, apart from it was published on page 91 in October 2014 edition of Home & Antiques Magazine.This magazine is full of great Still Life photographs inside a house or office ect. Also have some really good home products, still life objects and antiques. This is a still life photograph of living room set, which has some bright colours and dark colour wallpaper for a background.

I don’t know who produced this photograph apart from it was published in a Homes & Antiques magazine, October 2014 edition.

This image doesn’t look like it was used in a studio, but looks like a mini studio was set up in a living room in someone’s house, might even be the photographer’s house. When I was looking through the magazine, the photographer captured my eye. The still life arrangement really stands out well and has so much bright colour and detail in it, as well as the dark background it really stands out well with bright colours of the arm chair, lamp and carpet on the floor.

The lighting in the photograph could be two ways, it either lighting come through a window or a studio light which is shining down in middle from above. I think theirs reflectors being used, one of them being curtains, which is given the shadows on right hand side (left if you were chair/lamp) behind the arm chair and on the wall. I think the photographer has used a DSLR camera for this photo shoot.

Overall for a still life photographer, I think the photograph is good example of still life photograph of a home living room. As well as good example it catches your eye but personally I wouldn’t have that in my own living room.
