Office of Municipal Council Machhiwara Sahib

· Location

The town is located 35 km away from Ludhiana, 9 km from Samrala, 27 km from Chamkaur Sahib, 19 km from Rahon. The river Satluj is towards its north and Sirhind Canal is towards its South. Nearest railway station is Khanna which is 25 km far from here. Samrala is the sub district head quarter and Ludhiana is the District head quarter. Chandigarh is the state head quarter of the city and is 72 km far from here. The town has an area of 8.5 sq km. Total geographical area of MC Machhiwara is 8.5 sq. km. Population density of the city is 2931 persons per km. Yearly average rainfall of the city is 850 mm. Maximum temperature here reaches up to 42°C and minimum temperature goes down to 5.5°C.

Approach Roads :- The town is approachable by roads from Samrala, Ludhiana, Ropar, Chamkaur Sahib, Nawan Shahr After the completion of Satluj Bridge on the river the Satluj, access to the inhabitants of Doaba & Malwa regions have become easy. Earlier people from both sides moved by boat. After construction of this bridge the distance between Machhiwara Sahib & Rahon has reduced by almost 50 KM.

Khalsa Chowk, Machhiwara Sahib

· Historic Town

The town is historic as 10th Guru of Sikhs Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji came to this town after battle of Chamkaur Sahib. Guruji made a Plea to Almighty by reciting a holy hymn “Mittar Pyare Nu Haal Muridan Da Kehna”

The town has an old Shiva temple on the Ropar Road. It is believed that Pandvas spent a part of their agyatvas here. Due to historical importance of the town, Machhiwara was renamed as Machhiwara Sahib in 2014.

Demographics

As per 2011 Census the city is home to about 25 thousand people among them about 13 thousand (53%) are male and about 12 thousand (47%) are female. 75% of the whole population are from general caste, 25% are from schedule caste. Child (aged under 6 years) population of MC Machhiwara is 13%, among them 53% are boys and 47% are girls. There are 4937 households in the city and an average 5 persons live in every family. Hindus contribute 57% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the city followed by Sikhs which contribute 40% of the total population and Muslims are the third largest religious community here with 2% population. Female Sex ratio per 1000 male in Hindus are 884 in Sikhs are 935 and in Muslims are 716. Population of the city has increased by 35.7% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 18 thousand. Female population growth rate of the city is 36.3% which is 1.2% higher than male population growth rate of 35.1%. General caste population has increased by 43.1%; Schedule caste population has increased by 17.4% and child population has increased by 24.4% in the city since last census. As of 2011 census there are 902 females per 1000 male in the city. Sex ratio in general caste is 895, in schedule caste is 922. There are 873 girls under 6 years of age per 1000 boys of the same age in the city. Overall sex ratio in the city has increased by 9 females per 1000 male during the years from 2001 to 2011. Child sex ratio here has increased by 21 girls per 1000 boys during the same time. Total about 16 thousand people in the city are literate, among them 8775 are male and 7106 are female. Literacy rate (children under 6 are excluded) of MC Machhiwara is 74%. 78% of male and 69% of female population are literate here. Overall literacy rate in the city has increased by 4%. Male literacy has gone up by 3% and female literacy rate has gone up by 4%. MC Machhiwara has 35% (8615) population engaged in either main or marginal works. 54% male and 13% female population are working population. 51% of total male population are main (full time) workers and 3% are marginal (part time) workers. For women 11% of total female population are main and 2% are marginal workers.

Municipal Council & Other Offices

Nagar Panchayat was formed in Nov. 1977 in place of Gram Panchayat through a notification by Punjab Government. It was classified as class III Municipal Council through Govt. notification in 2008. Presently it is working under the Presidentship of Sh. Surinder Kundra. Sh. Vijay Kumar is its Senior Vice President & Smt. Paramjit Kaur is its Junior vice President It has 12 other members viz Kapil Anand, Satinder Kaur, Surinder Kumar, Paramjit Singh, Bimla Devi, Gurnam Singh, Suraj Kumar, Manjit Kumari, Punit Kaur, Harjit Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, Amarjit Singh.

The income of the Municipal Council for the financial year 2018-19 is Rs. 346.49 lakhs. It spent on Rs. 194.35 lakhs on Establishment and Rs. 160.97 Lakhs on Development. Besides development works of 200.00 Lakhs are near Completion with grant received from PMIDC.

The town is a Sub-Tehsil, it has the offices of Naib-Tehsildar, Block Development and Panchayat officer, Child development Project Officer, Post. Office, Market Committee, Police Station, FCI, Punsup, Food & Civil Supplies, Punjab State power corporation Limited, Telephone Exchange, Markfed, Agriculture Development office etc.

Water Supply :-About 90% of the population is served by the three tube wells. Sewerage has been laid in the city and sewerage treatment plant (STP) has become functional. Since 01.08.2015, Water Supply & Sewerage charge is with Punjab Water Supply & Sewerage Board.

· Other Amenities

Health Services

The population of the area is served by a team of doctors and Para Medical Staff of the Community Health Centre. Also a homeopathy dispensary exists in the Community Health Centre that attracts a large crowd of patients. Besides, the town has many private Clinics and nursing homes. A Government Veterinary Hospital is also there to serve the ailing animals of the area.

Machhiwara Sahib town has a good record of education. It enjoys facility of a degree college for girls since 1985. It has two Government Sr. Sec. Schools- One for the girls & the other for boys. Five government Primary Schools also serve the area. Education is also provided by many private institutions.

· Business

The town caters to the business needs of inhabitants of a large no. of villages. It has a good whole sale/ retail market, four pertrol pumps & two LPG gas agencies. Also the grain Market has approximately 250 commission agents. The town has more than 10 rice-shellers, a cold storage, Ice Factory. The town is surrounded by a number of factories owned by reputed business houses. The volume of business has attracted nearly 15 banks.

· Freedom Fighters

Seven persons of the town battled for the freedom of the country from British rules. They are :
