Mentor Scotland and SCPHRP are excited to announce that applications are now open for the third year of the Young STAND Awards!

Young STAND is an innovative awards scheme aimed at rewarding projects in Scotland that help prevent children and young people from misusing alcohol and other drugs. We believe that these projects deserve recognition for their hard work and support to continue making a difference to young people’s lives across the country.

Awards will be made in two categories: projects in schools and projects in the community. We are looking for projects that have young people at the heart of their development and/or delivery, through contributing ideas, developing materials or delivering the project to peers.

Successful applicants will be invited to show a video presentation of their project at an awards ceremony at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, on 8th June. The two winners will receive a cash prize of £1000 to develop their project, as well as mentoring and evaluation support.

Want to learn more?

You can read all about the Young STAND Awards, the application process, and find out about prizes here: http://www.mentoruk.org.uk/current-projects/young-stand-awards-2015/.

You can also sign up to the STAND mailing list to receive updates - including being the first to know when audience tickets become available here: http://www.scphrp.ac.uk/get-updates/.

Fake heroin MORE dangerous than illegal drug Drug dealers are cooking up fake heroin which is more dangerous than its illegal counterpart.Crooks are creating new - cheaper - substances which mimic the effects of heroin and selling them to city junkies. Addicts who buy a £10 bag think they're getting heroin, with a purity of around 4%.But in fact, they are using a potentially-lethal mixture of drugs they have never heard of. Bags from the same batch of synthetic opioids can contain hugely different, and totally unpredictable, chemical combinations. One drugs worker, who supports addicts in Glasgow, said: "Drug dealing is about making money. Dealers sell the cheapest product so they can to make the maximum profit. If they can add something cheap to the gear, they are going to do it. They don't know what's in the stuff they're selling and they don't care."

Limit bar licenses to cut alcohol related violence, says Britain's most senior police officerAlcohol related violence could be cut by limiting the number of licenses issued to bars and pubs, according to Britain’s most senior police officer.Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said 80 per cent of arrests in the evening were drink-related, and more had to be done to control the supply of alcohol.“We need to make sure there is good control of the supply of alcohol,” the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police said in a speech to the Royal Society of Arts in London on the future of policing.

Cocaine report finds use has spread throughout UK societyACMD says two-tier market has emerged, with trade in cheaper, low-purity drug running parallel with a smaller one in more expensive version of higher purity.Cocaine use, once the preserve of celebrities and the wealthy, has spread throughout British society into its suburbs, high rises and inner city council estates, drug advisers say.A report by the government’s advisory council on the misuse of drugs (ACMD) found that although consumption of the drug had fallen slightly from a peak in 2008/09, its use has permeated through a wide social demographic that includes the middle classes and those on lower incomes. This has been driven by the emergence of a two tier market; very low-purity, cheaper cocaine, in parallel with a smaller trade in a more expensive version of higher purity.

No let-up in drive to combat 'legal highs'Two groups of dangerous ‘legal highs’ were today (11th March) banned by the Coalition Government. The stimulant compound drug 4,4’-DMAR, which is linked to the deaths of more than 20 people in the UK, mainly Northern Ireland, and the synthetic opioid MT-45, have both been outlawed as Class A substances. It is part of a concerted range of action taken by the government to respond to the challenges caused by new psychoactive substances (NPS) – known as ‘legal highs’.This action includes developing proposals for a general ban on NPS following a recommendation by an expert panel commissioned by the Home Office.

New mind-altering drugs being detected at a rate of two PER WEEKNew Psychoactive Drugs are being detected in Europe at a rate of two per week, new data from the EU drugs agency has revealed.According to the EMCDDA, a total of 101 new mind-altering substances – known as ‘designer drugs’ were reported last year – up from 81 in 2013.A total of 450 such substances are now being monitored by the agency – with more than half of that figure being identified in the last three years.Fake cannabis-like drugs and synthetic speed or ecstasy-type pills (of the type formerly sold in Irish ‘head shops’) accounted for almost two thirds of the new drugs uncovered.BLOGS, COMMENT & OPINION

Recovery stories reduce ‘addict’ stigma and ease social reintegration More media stories of addiction being successfully treated would reduce stigma and ease social reintegration and recovery, suggests this innovative study. Reading just one such story made a national US sample more willing to work with former dependent users of illicit heroin or prescription painkillers and accept them into their families.

Measuring recovery: moving to agreement‘You’re all going to hate the word ‘recovery’ by the end of this’’: Service users’ views of measuring addiction recovery is a research paper by myself and colleagues published in Drugs Education Prevention Policy (2015; 22(1): 26-34 ). The quote was given by ‘Sean’ half way through an ex-user focus group.

What is recovery? Five classes of recovering individualsRecovery, as defined by the Betty Ford Institute Consensus Panel, refers to “a voluntarily maintained lifestyle characterized by sobriety, personal health, and citizenship.” However, there are many paths to recovery and ways in which it is conceptualized. Some may define it as a reduction in drug and alcohol use so as to not disrupt daily functioning while others may not identify as being in recovery at all despite long-term abstinence following a past issue with substance misuse. Understanding these different recovery dimensions from the perspectives of those with first-hand experience can inform national and international recovery agendas and policies.Recovery - Five TypologiesHow to Dig for the Deeper Meaning in Substance UseThere's more than one way to practice addiction psychotherapy. As our understanding of the biopsychosocial complexity of addiction evolves, the best clinicians continuously strive to incorporate new developments in theory and technique into their practices. While it is assumed that a practicing clinician will have mastered the use of relapse prevention and motivational interviewing techniques, the ability to combine these basic addiction therapy approaches with more nuanced psychotherapeutic advances that have developed independently of addiction practice gives clinicians an ability to dig deeper and go further with patients. Dr Judy Levitz provides a master class on the incorporation of psychoanalytic principles and techniques in working with addictive disorders.

How I Empower myself by Admitting I’m Powerless over Addiction“I choose to identify as an alcoholic and addict, to keep me in touch with the reality of where using these substances took me. Being reminded of this reality has special purpose for me because I drank, used, and engaged in other dangerous activities to escape reality. One of the primary objectives of my recovery and wellness today—just as it was day one sober—is to learn how to more effectively live in reality”.
