Department of Economics
About the Department of Economics The Department of Economics is the Heart of Arts, Crown of Commerce and Mother of Management. It is known as the “Queen of Social Sciences”. It impacts our lives in many ways and no one can escape from its influence. The Department was started way back in the year of 1969. Initially, Pre-University Courses along with B.A., was started and with B.Com. in the year 1979. It also shoulders the responsibility of Post Graduate Course in Commerce being added in the year 2014.
Many great teachers served in this department like Dr.B.Seshadri, who
joined as founder staff of the department and presently he is a member of high
power committee of the Government of Karnataka for the implementation of
Dr.D.M.Nanjundappa Committee on Regional disparity, then Late.Dr.H.Basanna,
joined and served for several years and later he retired as Principal of Vijayanagar
College, Hospet. The department is fortunate to have the services of stalwarts like
Sri. Ramaswamy, Sri.P.Gurubasappa, who became the Principal of Smt.ASM
College for Women and Smt.Suman Naik, who too became the Principal of this
College. Sri.Yeranna, Dr.S.S.Patil, Dr.Ajjaiaha, and Late.Dr.S.A.Mannan were
some of the jewels who have rendered their invaluable services in the department.
Presently, the department is headed by Dr.G.Shashikiran and supported by two
guest faculty members viz., Smt.Poornima.Y. and Smt.Triveni.K.M. The
department conducts special lectures, seminars, group discussions, presentations,
social surveys and elocution competitions in association with the Forum of Free
Enterprise, Mumbai, a Forum managed by Sri.A.D.Shroff and Sri.Nani Phalkiwala
trusts.

“Love the learning and learn with commitment” – Moulding the students economically viable throughout the world not only as successful managers- both at household as well as professional level but also as best human beings with core values.
Mission:
To strike off the myth of Economics that wants are unlimited and resources are limited. One can become rich not only by earning or producing more wealth than what he demands. It
can also be achieved by reducing our demand so that nature has enough to satisfy all our needs.
Objectives:
To identify the entrepreneurial competencies and motivate the students to opt entrepreneurship as their career rather than being employees under someone.
To train the students to apply principles of economics in their practical way of life. To develop the ability of students to understand economic concepts and skills to apply in
making intelligent decisions in business, life and public policy. To imbibe the quality of social responsibility of finding solutions by correlating
economic theory with current economic issues in the nation.

Events conducted by Department of Economics during the period 2011-2016
A.D.Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition:
An elite elocution competition of the Department of Economics-Sponsored by ‘The
Forum of Free Enterprise, Mumbai, and conducted by very few Colleges in Karnataka. It
is aimed at developing oratory and analytical skills as well as making the students aware
of the burning problems of the country and the world. Topics, certificates and Prize
money of Rs 3000/- are given by the forum and Planning Forum/ Department of
Economics of the College use to conduct the competition annually among their degree
College students only. Our College is conducting it since 1972 without fail.
52nd AD Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition held recently. Department Staff and
judges- late Dr SA Mannan, Sri Murali Shankar Goud.
Radio Mirchi Talent Hunt Program 1915, conducted by the famous FM radio channel of
India. It conducts different competitions in the campus and selects students with
outstanding skills for next level.
Inter-disciplinary co-operation- a special lecture from the Economics faculty to Hindi students on
Globalization and Demonetization.
Special Lecture by Department of Economics, English and Computer Science at NSS Camp at
Shridharagadde Village near Ballari.
The Department conducts regular seminars, group discussions and field visits. The students are
encouraged to use ICT facilities available at the College.
The Department is always in the forefront in organizing protests against injustice and carrying
the voice and aspirations of the people to the Government through the DC.
One day entrepreneurship development program for degree students organized by Department of
Economics and Deparment of Commerce and Management in collaboration with DIC,
Department of Commerce and Industry, Bengaluru.
Pink Day-the Breast Cancer awareness day organized by the Planning Forum.
GO Green day-Students were asked to come in Green Dress as a symbol of environmental
Protection awareness program organized jointly by the Department of Economics and
Management
Intercollegiate Effective Public Speech Contest organized by Department of Commerce and
Management & Department of Economics in collaboration with Jaycees Club, Ballari.
