Young Voicesfrom Targets (2020), p. 196

The American pastor and writer Edward Everett Hale stated, “I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.” Growing up is about identifying personal strengths, but also about discovering the power of the collective: we are stronger together.

Young Brits are continuously standing up for themselves and for what they believe in. By finding their way in society and digging into things they find important, they have an impact on others.

Adwoa AboahFashion model and mental health campaignerAboah has appeared on the cover of both British and American Vouge and won the Model of the Year Award in 2017. She describes herself as an activist first and a model second. She founded a mental health charity, Gurls Talk, which started out as an Instagram account. On her online platform, girls can discuss mental health, sexuality and education. Her podcast has a clear structure: Gurls Talk, where guests share their story; Gurls Share, where listeners send in their experiences; Gurls Listen, where guests share their coping mechanisms; Gurls Take Control, where Aboah and her interviewees talk about what they have learned; and Gurls Take Action, where they work out what, practically, they can do next.

Aboah also invites young people and politicians to offline discussions about mental health. This is not always easy. In the Guardian she states, “There are times when I do feel quite fearful about talking about politics. You have to be knowledgeable and articulate,” she says. “That always scares me, as someone who has struggled academically and is highly dyslexic.”

These YouTube celebrities are famous entertainers who have discovered new ways of making money in a new era of communication. Billions of people all over the world watch their videos and follow their gaming careers.

Stormzy and SlowthaiRappers Rappers often comment on various aspects of society. The London-based rapper Stormzy, of Ghanaian heritage, is one of the most successful British rap artists. With songs like “Vossi Bop” and “Shut up”, he has received much critical acclaim. He has launched #Merky Books together with Heineman publishing house to draw attention to the best writers of a new generation and promote stories that are not being heard. Slowthai, whose real name is Tyron Kaymone Frampton, is an up-and-coming grime artist from Northampton. He expresses his concerns about being young and working class in his album Nothing Great About Britain.

Stormzy’s Union Jack stab vest is designed by Banksy. It was seen as a message on the rise of knife crime in London.

Lara SpiritStudent and activist “So far the voices of the youth on Brexit – the worst inheritance deal in peacetime history – have been disparate and easy to ignore.” Lara Spirit is the co-founder of the organization Our Future, Our Choice, which was set up in 2018. Various surveys

suggest that just over 70 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 voted to remain in the EU in the Brexit referendum in 2016. In December 2018, Spirit and her campaign group went to Downing Street with a petition signed by 1.5 million people to push for a second referendum.

Influencersfrom “Who Do You Listen To?”, Targets (2020) p. 119–121.

Would you buy a pair of shoes because someone on Instagram said they were great? Or choose a new phone based on the recommendation of a top YouTuber? The answer: If so, you are proof of the effectiveness of influencer marketing. Celebrities posting images of themselves with an “awesome” product, without mentioning that the "fabulous" company behind it has paid them a tidy sum to be quite so enthusiastic are being heavily criticized, and they are “encouraged to use hashtags such as #ad, #sponsored or #freebie to give their fans a clearer picture of what's going on”. Dr Mariann Hardey, associate professor in marketing at Durham University, says she is sceptic about influencer marketing and that it is really just another form of that age-old advertising technique, the celebrity endorsement: “I don't think this is the holy grail. Influencers simply amplify traditional marketing methods and strategies,” she says.

Werner Geyser, founder of the Influencer Marketing Hub, which helps connect influencers with brands, admits that we should not underestimate the power of influencers or the bond between them and their followers: “These audiences are following them for a reason. They share common interests so they almost act as a media outlet themselves. They have massive, massive reach.”

The question is how they use that influence.(BBC News, 25 January 2019)

Audience, Purpose and Text Typefrom Targets (2020) p. 82.

The three fundamental concepts of any type of communication are as follows:

Audience: to whom something is written or said (young people, experts, general public, etc.)

Purpose: why something is written or said (to persuade, to argue, to express opinion or feelings, etc.)

Text type: form and content of a text adjusted to audience and purpose (genre)

When you text a friend, you automatically adjust your writing according to your audience (friend), your purpose (you want to meet up with your friend) and the text type (you quickly write a very short informal text on your phone).

The purpose of a text could be to entertain, inform, warn, persuade, advise, explain, instruct, support or discuss an issue. Identifying purpose is not always straightforward, and sometimes a text can have more than one purpose.

Global Heating: Act Now!Did you know?

Slowing down global heating can make a crucial difference! If we reach a level where the average global temperature has increased 1.5°C from pre-industrial levels, we say that we have reached 1.5C. The illustration below shows some of the major differences between 1.5C and 2C global heating, in terms of the impacts on the world.
