This secondary source details the building of St. Petersburg from the British perspective and how it increased cooperation and created ties between the Russian and British Empires. The article describes how numerous buildings, like the Russian Academy of Sciences and the St. Petersburg Church of England, were built in St. Petersburg to strengthen the relationship between Russia and the British Empire.

The rule of Peter the Great is associated with the transition of Russian Diplomacy from Muscovite traditions to westernized diplomatic theory. Peter the Great transformed Russian Diplomacy and broke Muscovite tradition by sending envoys and making private visits to many European states. This article describes the new Russian diplomatic strategy, and it also

Peter the Great transformed a feudalistic, medieval state into a westernized European power through his cultural reforms. Peter the Great grappled with the Russian aristocracy for power and united Russia firmly under the tsar. This book explains what methods Peter the Great used to overcome the powerful Russian Aristocracy. The book also describes how the rule of Peter the Great prepared Russia for the influence of new cultural ideas, like Communism.

Trans. John Alexander. Armonk: M. E. Sharpe, 1993. Questia Online Library. Web. 29 Oct. 2010 < http://www.questia.com>

This secondary source, written in Russia during the Soviet Union, details the life of Peter the Great and how his reforms made Russia a European Power. The book focuses on describing what Russia was like before Peter’s reign, why Peter the Great implemented his reforms, and how the reforms affected Russia. This book offers a detailed insight into the mindset of Peter the Great and why he implemented his reforms. This book also connects Peter’s reforms with the future development of Russia into a communist state and compares Peter the Great to Josef Stalin.

Power Point Guidelines

You have the option to create a powerpoint presentation to accompany your 5-8 minute presentation. Save your powerpoint in at least 3 different places including a USB. A successful powerpoint should be concise, avoid distractions and text dense slides. It must includes images (photographs, tables, graphs depending on the topic)

Page 7: classwithwells.weebly.comclasswithwells.weebly.com/.../2/22423416/2015_research_globaliz…  · Web viewPresentation format is up to you, but you are required to have visuals in

You Should Have in Power Point:1) Cover Slide:

a. Questionb. Your Namec. Relevant Image, Quote or Dates

2) 10 Content Slides: a. Thesis is presented (using bullet form, just like in the outline) b. Aligns with outline c. Use bullet points instead of full sentencesd. Use images/charts / maps

3) Written Sources Bibliography Slide: a. Cite all the sources you used to create your Research Cards and

Notecards

See examples of good slides below:

[TEMPLATE]RESEARCH CARDS

RESEARCH QUESTION: In what ways has economic globalization impacted {insert your chosen country} since WWI?

CITATION OF SOURCE:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

QUOTE/STATISTIC/EVIDENCE:

This section is a direct excerpt from a source that you use as the evidence to support your idea. Use ellipsis (…) to combine two or more parts of an article; use brackets ([ ]) to clarify noun references when the excerpt you’ve chosen uses pronouns and their reference is unclear. Each quote for each Evidence Inventory sheet should be somewhat distinct from the other. Avoid redundant quotes that say the same thing. Finally, please put the page number at the end of the quote but just the number; you do not need to write “p” or “page”! (Author Page#).

PARAPHRASE:

This section is the *summary* of the idea or argument that is being made in the quote/statistic you have found; it should be brief (1 or 2 sentences) and concise. It is just a summary of your quote in *your own words* It should not include any arguments/opinions from you—these belong in the Analysis section. Paraphrase the quote just by summarizing it and/or translating into your own words.

ANALYSIS:(Link/Impact)

This section is where you explain how the evidence in the top box links back to your research question. This should be a short paragraph (3 sentences minimum). DO NOT simply summarize, reword, or re-quote the quote. Avoid speculative words such as: probably, maybe, potentially, might, could. These words diminish the strength of your argument. Explain how the quote answers your question, how it proves your thesis, undermines your thesis, changes your thesis, or how this one piece of evidence links to another piece of evidence you have.

Use “hanging indent” feature

Page 9: classwithwells.weebly.comclasswithwells.weebly.com/.../2/22423416/2015_research_globaliz…  · Web viewPresentation format is up to you, but you are required to have visuals in

Hint: Best strategy to begin writing this section is to use the wording of your side. In other words, begin this section with “Economic globalization impacted X country in this way because….”

RESEARCH QUESTION: In what ways has economic globalization impacted {insert your chosen country} since WWI?

CITATION:

Smith, Joe. “Legacies of Genocide.” Newsweek. July 6 2004.

QUOTE:

According to the Swedish Prime Minister, "During mass killings in Rwanda and in the former Yugoslavia, the world stood paralyzed.…lack of information was not the main problem since eyewitness accounts of atrocities spread around the world quickly, thanks to modern technology. We do not lack the information, but we need to improve our ability to believe it, to believe the unbelievable” (Smith 24).

PARAPHRASE:

The increased communication possible under globalization is not improving the protection of fundamental human rights as seen with the Rwandan genocide.

Page 10: classwithwells.weebly.comclasswithwells.weebly.com/.../2/22423416/2015_research_globaliz…  · Web viewPresentation format is up to you, but you are required to have visuals in

ANALYSIS:(Link/Impact)

Globalization does not improve human rights in Rwanda because it does not compel the people with power to act to stop human atrocities. Globalization has made more rapid communication possible all over the world. However, even though this clearly led to people hearing and seeing the beginnings of genocide happening, they still chose not to act. Although globalization convinces nations that they are more inter-connected than ever before, the Swedes reaction to the Rwandan genocide illustrates how humans resist intervention when their own welfare is not in jeopardy.

Research Interview with LibrariansMr. Ring or Ms. Jacquet

Schedule an appointment with one of the librarians to discuss your plans for the research project. Bring the country you have chosen and any materials (for example, an article, a book, etc.) that you have found so far. Do your best to be somewhat familiar with either your country or the relevancy of your preliminary sources. At the very least, you should have read the profile of your country on CIA FactBook website. During your conference you will complete the following questions together and submit to me when completed.

1. Explain why you chose the resources you brought to this interview.

2. Demonstrate that you know how to use the Pomfret Library website, including Questia.

3. Discuss the keywords and synonyms you are using to research.

Page 11: classwithwells.weebly.comclasswithwells.weebly.com/.../2/22423416/2015_research_globaliz…  · Web viewPresentation format is up to you, but you are required to have visuals in

4. Discuss the problems/challenges you have encountered so far.

5. Map out the next steps you will take.

6. What are the top two most useful sources you have found thus far?
