Program HighlightsAustralia Remembers

Cementing the ABC’s role as the home of Australian stories and national conversations, ABC Television will broadcast a range of programs commemorating one of the defining moments of Australia’s history – the Gallipoli landings.

In particular, a number of documentaries marking 100 years of service, and commissioned with the support of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, will air from Sunday 19 April. These are Australia’s Great War Horse, Why Anzac With Sam Neill, Lest We Forget What? and The Crater.

These films follow the success of the acclaimed drama Anzac Girls and documentary series The War That Changed Us last year, similarly supported by Veterans’ Affair.

The ABC’s full Australia Remembers Anzac coverage across TV, radio and online is available at: abc.net.au/anzac/programming. This site will be updated as projects and details are confirmed and announced.

Australia's Great War Horse

Sunday, 19 April 2015

More than 130,000 Australian horses served in the Great War of 1914-18. Nearly 30,000 were engaged in the Middle East. Popularly known as 'Walers', it was in the desert sands that their legend was born. They carried their men to victory on the long road to Damascus, but at war's end they did not come home.

Australia's Great War Horse takes us on an epic journey from the outback of Australia, across the vast Indian Ocean, to the pyramids of Egypt, the living hell that was Gallipoli, and the unforgiving desert sands of the Middle East. After the disaster of Gallipoli, and with the Ottoman Turks threatening the Suez Canal, regiments of the Australian Light Horse were to undertake a gruelling three-year campaign to drive the Turks from the Sinai and Palestine, culminating in the 'Great Ride' through the Jordan Valley and the capture of Damascus.

This epic desert war couldn't have been undertaken without the horses or the small army of horse-breakers, veterinarians, farriers, saddlers and feed suppliers who were essential to keeping thousands of horses in the field and battle-ready. Intense bonds between man and horse developed, and the loss of a horse in battle was a harrowing experience. For the first time, Australia's Great War Horse goes behind the legend of two celebrated partnerships - Michael Shanahan and 'Bill the Bastard', and Guy Haydon and 'Midnight'.

This is the story of the horses' colonial origins, their gallant service, and their shameful fate. Featuring many voices, from leading war historians to horse experts, to the descendants of those who served, Australia's Great War Horse uses dramatised sequences (including the celebrated charge at the Battle of Beersheba), rare archival stills and rolling footage, actual battleground landscapes, and computerised compositing techniques, to explore and evoke the record of Australia's horses in the desert war.

In an exclusive, Australia's Great War Horse debunks the myth perpetrated by T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) that he was the one to accept the surrender of Damascus on 1st October 1918. It was actually Major Arthur Olden of Australia's 10th Light Horse who accepted the surrender of the city.

When local mine Wheal Reath is closed, hundreds of miners, including Jim (Alexander Arnold), find themselves out of work and desperately poor. Ross (Aidan Turner), having repaired Nampara, now employs Jim as a farm hand and thinks to resurrect his family's mine, Wheal Leisure. He hopes to bring prosperity to the area again, but is advised against the venture by his banker and friend, Harris Pascoe, who does not believe he could find speculators in the current climate.

Meanwhile, Verity (Ruby Bentall) asks Ross to accompany her to a ball at the Assembly Rooms, where she meets Captain Andrew Blamey (Richard Harrington) and falls madly in love. However, Blamey is hiding a dark secret that he must tell her. Ross, with the help of Mine Captain Henshawe (John Hollingworth) and willing investor Horace Treneglos (Michael Culkin), manages to convince Pascoe that Wheal Leisure is a viable business.

Under George's (Jack Farthing) influence, a jealous Francis (Kyle Soller) decides not to go into business with Ross. Meanwhile, Ross must help Verity arrange a tryst with Captain Blamey after Charles (Warren Clarke) discover Blamey's scandalous past and forbids her from seeing him. Francis, spurred by his jealousy of Ross and angered by his fresh betrayal, challenges Blamey to an ill-fated duel. Ross is able to save Francis's life, but Charles blames Ross for the incident and will not forgive him. Elizabeth, however, is extremely grateful to Ross, revealing that she is pregnant with Francis's child.

Why Anzac With Sam Neill

Tuesday, 21 April 2015

Sam Neill examines the enduring myths of the Anzac legend, sharing his family's war stories and uncovering forgotten truths that haunt us still today.

From the Gallipoli Peninsula back to the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand, where he grew up; across the Tasman to Australia where he has lived for 35 years; and over to the killing fields of Belgium, France, Crete and Italy, Sam Neill probes why New Zealand and Australia are bound by the blood shed during a century of warfare.

On the centenary of the disastrous Gallipoli landing, the film looks for answers as to why that particular event has become symbolic and is remembered more than any other in the two nations' shared history. Personal photographs and letters are featured, as well as selected archival footage and interviews with historians.

The Weekly With Charlie Pickering

Wednesday, 22 April 2015 New SeriesAustralians demand a show that keeps its promises, and THE WEEKLY with Charlie Pickering promises to be both weekly and hosted by Charlie Pickering.

A brand new half-hour comedy show that shoves a broom handle into the spinning wheel of the news cycle, THE WEEKLY with Charlie Pickering shines a light on the bits of the week's news that you didn't notice, as well as some bits you were noticing when you didn't notice the other stuff. Backed up by heavy weight comedians Tom Gleeson & Kitty Flanagan, who both object to that description, THE WEEKLY will expose the humorous, the absurd and the downright hypocritical, 24/7, once a week.

THE WEEKLY: the news you need, a few days after you need it.

The Agony Of God

Wednesday, 22 April 2015

Three out of five scientists do not believe in God, saying that religion actively subverts science and saps the intellect. And for years, religion felt the same way about science - most famously when Galileo faced the Inquisition and was forced to retract his ‘heretic’ theory that the Earth revolved around the sun.

But lately Pope Francis has gone some way to bringing the two camps together by declaring that the theory of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not "a magician with a magic wand". Francis explained that both scientific theories were not incompatible with the existence of a creator - arguing instead that they require it. But is this enough to convince atheists, or is it just a rationalisation?

Lest We Forget What?

Wednesday, 22 April 2015

When we reflect on WWI what are we remembering? The facts, or just one small part of the Anzac story, a story that has become steeped in Anzac legend? Ask yourself this question when Anzac Day comes about - Lest we forget what?

For 27-year-old presenter Kate Aubusson, it's all about Gallipoli, the Anzac spirit. Boys from the bush, sacrifice, mateship and being born as a nation the day the Diggers landed at Anzac Cove. This is important to her. She had relatives who fought in WWI. When she was a kid she would stand for the minute’s silence and say 'Lest We Forget', but in that silence she never knew exactly what she was supposed to remember… Now she is going on a quest that follows the path of the Anzacs. What she wants to find out is… When we say, 'lest we forget' - Lest we forget what?

From Australia to Gallipoli and across the Western Front, Kate travels to Istanbul en route to Anzac Cove on Anzac day. She speaks with serving soldiers at Duntroon, and navigates the battlefields of the Western Front. She meets descendants of soldiers, travels with eminent historians, and learns from those who are training the next generation of Australian soldiers. It is a journey that will change what we all think about the Anzac legend and ourselves.

The Crater: A Vietnam Story

Thursday, 23 April 2015

Brian Cleaver, a National Serviceman conscript whose number came out of the lottery barrel, was sent to Vietnam to serve his country. But his experiences there would change the course of his entire life.

Through the vehicle of Brian's continuing quest to lay the ghosts of his past - and atone for some of the horrors of combat - this film is a remarkable portrait of war and its long term consequences.

Brian was so traumatised by his exposure to the battles of Coral and Balmoral that he has been suffering from post-traumatic stress for the past 46 years. As he acknowledges himself, part of his way of dealing with the nightmares of those two battles which he experienced firsthand, is his search for the missing 42 bodies of the enemy soldiers of the North Vietnamese Army who threw themselves at the Australian lines during the battles. Those 42 were bulldozed into a mass grave in a large B52 bomb crater in front of the Australian digger's position.

This film tells the story of the battles that changed Brian's life, and sees him return to Vietnam - to meet old enemies and dig for the bodies of the men he helped to kill.

The Crater uses a mixture of contemporary interviews with both Australian and Vietnamese war veterans, verite material, archival footage and dramatisation to connect modern viewers with the reality of battle and the historical narrative of the men behind it. It exposes the psychological effects the Vietnam war had on veterans right up until the present day.

Agatha Raisin: The Quiche Of Death

Saturday, 25 April 2015

Having spent years clawing her way to the top of the cutthroat world of public relations, Agatha Raisin (Ashley Jensen) is tiring of the high life. Pining for a more peaceful existence in friendlier locales, she sells her business and leaves London opting for early retirement in the picturesque idyll of the Cotswolds.

Agatha settles in Carsely, an outwardly sleepy village in scenic surroundings, and attempts to curry favour with the locals, cheating her way into a quiche-making competition with an entry purchased from an upmarket urban deli. But the gambit spectacularly backfires when the philandering judge, Major Andy Cummings-Browne (Robert Bathurst), is found poisoned from a killer quiche - the one 'cooked' by Agatha!

Finding herself ostracised and shunned in the village, Agatha begins an amateur investigation into the death, applying the skills she would usually reserve for a thorny PR campaign, to get at the truth of the matter. Outspoken, opinionated and never afraid to speak her mind, regardless of the consequences, Agatha shakes up the tranquil world of Carsely, unearthing hidden secrets as she goes.

With her cleaner Gemma (Katy Wix), the lovelorn local policeman DC Bill Wong (Matt McCooey) and faithful former assistant Roy (Mathew Horne) in tow, Agatha's determined to wring out the truth, hoping to salvage her reputation and dreams of a perfect life.

Also stars Hermione Norris, Timothy Renouf, Kay Burley, Tim Stern, Maddie Monti, June Watson, Sandy McDade, Caroline Langrishe.
