Thank You…Thank you for choosing to serve with us in Haiti. Through God’s grace, starting back in 2010, when the devastating 7.0 earthquake struck, ReachGlobal Crisis Response, in partnership with the ReachGlobal Latin American/Caribbean Division, developed a number of partnerships in the country. We believe that local ministries are paramount in supporting local disciplemakers who, in turn, are building God’s kingdom in Haiti. We felt God’s call to help in the aftermath of the earthquake and continue to feel called to stay for long-term ministry. We are grateful that you have chosen to partner with us! Our Vision…

Transformation through intentional disciplemaking and holistic ministry partnerships

Hands and Feet…Please plan to serve as God leads and be open to ministering to the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of those you interact with in Haiti. If you keep Jesus at the center of all of the details and plans, you will have a much more enjoyable time. Visiting neighbors of our ReachGlobal Missionary Team or helping the communities of our local ministry partners becomes a chance to share Jesus. Living every moment as a conduit for Christ can be life changing in this fertile environment!  All the People of the World…We serve all God’s people...rich, poor, all colors, shapes, and sizes. Through your service in Haiti, you are in a position to be Christ-like servants; a chance to be Jesus in the flesh to someone who perhaps has never met Him…someone who never gave thought to the need for a Savior. While some organizations might focus on the work to be done, our priority is focused on people and building relationships that allow us to show God’s love to those whose paths we cross.  Be prepared to be fluid…If there were one word that is crucial for all short-term missions it would be fluid. No one knows what God will bring your way or ask your team to do. Be ready for the unexpected by eliminating any preconceived expectations. In this ministry, when things don’t go according to schedule or in the way that we think things should go, our adopted slogan is, “Be fluid!” It reminds us that God is in control and our plan is truly subpar to His. Your success in this ministry is measured by your obedience to God, and your willingness to let HIM set the agenda. Having a willing spirit and open mind will enable wonderful engagements between team members.  Join the Revival…Our hope and prayer is that after you leave Haiti, you will keep this experience in the forefront of your mind, remembering that serving God’s people can happen right in your own back yard! While in Haiti, we hope that God will ignite new ideas and passions in the heart of you and members of your team and that you return home with a desire to serve the Lord in new and meaningful ways!

Serving Him in constant awe,ReachGlobal Haiti Team

PREPARING FOR YOUR MISSION TRIP

What Will We Be Doing?Possible ministry activities include: Medical/DentalLabor/ConstructionVBS/Youth ProgramsPrayer Community GardeningOther needs as determined   The ReachGlobal Missionary Team uses the skills and interests of your team along with the needs of our ministry partners to determine your team’s ministry activities for the week. The sooner you submit the Team Member Skill Assessment (page Error: Reference source not found), the sooner we can begin working on this.

How Much Does the Trip Cost? The total cost for the trip is $840 plus airfare and personal expenses. The $840 fee is paid in two payments. A $75 per person non-refundable, non-transferable deposit is required when your team submits the Haiti Team Application. One month prior to your flight to Haiti, your team must mail in the balance check for the entire team.  The team fee covers lodging and dinners for 6 nights, security, interpreters, drivers, in-country transportation, ministry/construction materials, and ongoing ReachGlobal ministry needs.

How Much Money Should I Bring? Each member of the team will need to bring $10 cash to pay a tourist tax upon entering the country. Exact change is recommended.  You will also need $2-3 per person to tip Wilbur who will meet you as you exit the airport and help bring you and your bags safely to our driver.  There are opportunities to buy Haitian Perle coffee (http://www.perlefoundation.org/about) , souvenirs, and perhaps lunch at the beach. US dollars are acceptable, but please bring in small bills in good condition (not torn, written on, or too worn). $1’s, $5’s, and $10’s are best. $150-$200 should be adequate.  You will not have an opportunity to go to the bank, use an ATM, or use credit cards once you are in Haiti. If you plan to carry a credit card with you to use during your travel within the US or at the airport in Haiti, it can be stored in our safe during your stay.

What About Health and Medical Care? Please let your team leader know of any preexisting medical conditions or physical limitations that might hinder team member participation in ministry activities in Haiti.

- Are you diabetic?- Are you taking vital prescription medicines?- Are you prone to kidney stones?- Do you have trouble tolerating heat?- Are you prone to motion sickness?- Do you have any conditions that might make it difficult to walk on rocky terrain?- Others…

Immunizations/Prescriptions : The best place to start inquiring about immunizations is with your personal physician or a travel clinic. There are no specific immunization requirements for entry into Haiti. If you would like to see the recommendations given by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you can visit their website: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/haiti In addition to immunizations, your doctor may recommend a prescription for anti-malarial medication and perhaps a broad-spectrum antibiotic.  Medical Facilities in Haiti:Should the need arise, there is a trusted, American-run clinic a few blocks from where the team will be staying.

ARRIVING IN HAITI

Passport and Visa You must bring your valid passport to enter Haiti. If your passport is set to expire within 6 months of your trip, you must renew it before coming.

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay of 90 days or less, but you will need to pay a $10 tourist tax upon arrival.  As a safety precaution, safeguard yourself by making several copies of the information pages of your passport BEFORE leaving the United States.

Leave one copy at home with a reliable contact Pack one copy safely in your luggage, separate from the passport that you carry Give one copy to your team leader (he/she will scan and send it to

ReachGlobal’s U.S. based coordinator and bring the extra hard copy on the trip)

Airport Procedures: When you check in for your flight, you should be given luggage claim stickers. Please keep them because you will be asked to show them when you claim your bags in Port-au-Prince. On the plane you will be asked to fill out two forms: a customs form and an immigration form. Please fill your forms out before you leave the airplane. Here is some of the information you will need for those forms:

Reason for being in the country: pleasureAddress in country: Rue TiBoucan, Gressier, Ouest, HaitiPhone number in country (you can use any of the following):

Sharron Mathis - +509-4808-6705Dave Mathis - +509-3783-8742Jennifer Blevins - +509-4809-0895Stephanie Fry - +509-3705-3245

If you are not given these forms on the plane, look for someone who is handing them out in the immigration hall, before you go to pay your tourist tax.

Airport Arrival Procedure1. If you need to use the bathroom, there is one to the right as you enter the immigration hall.2. Go to the left in the immigration hall to pay your $10 tourist tax. (It is easier if you have exact change and have it ready ahead of time to avoid pulling out a wallet filled with cash in front of everyone).3. Get in line to pass an immigration officer. Show him/her your passport and hand in your green form. The officer will return the bottom of the green form back to you. DO NOT LOSE IT! You need this portion of the form to exit the country. 4. Proceed downstairs to baggage claim to pick up your luggage. (If you want a luggage cart, you can rent one for $2 off to the left. If you need a bathroom, there is one to the right of the baggage carousels. This may be your last chance to use a bathroom for more than 2 hours.) 5. Once you have your luggage, proceed to the exit. It is standard to have someone check your baggage claim ticket as you head to the customs line. 6. There will be a customs agent before you exit the building. Turn in your white customs form to the agent. You may also be asked to show your passport at this point.

8

Page 9:   · Web viewMULTIPLYING TRANSFORMATIONAL CHURCHES AMONG ALL PEOPLE Team member Packet. Haiti (Revised March 2019) ReachGlobal Missionary Team:

As You Exit the Airport: We will have someone waiting for you as you exit the airport. Typically, it is a man named Wilbur and he is usually holding a sign that says “ReachGlobal.” He will help you with your bags and take you out to our vehicles. Please tip him $2-3 per person, up to $30—it is better to give all the tip money to the team leader ahead of time to avoid over/under tipping.

Do not be surprised by the crowd of people. Others (often in uniforms) will want to help you with your bags or offer you a taxi. Just say “no thank you” and keep moving. If someone does insist that he is there to help you, ask him what his name is. (Do not ask him if his name is Wilbur.)

If you are at all concerned, go back inside the airport and call one of the ReachGlobal Missionary Team members.

Drive from the AirportDriving through Port-au-Prince is quite an experience. You will be tempted to take photos, but we strongly advise against that. Taking photos could be offensive or draw unnecessary attention to the group.

WHILE IN HAITI

Where You Will ServeYou will be staying in the town of Gressier. It is about 20 miles outside of Port-au-Prince and in a more rural setting.

Housing and Sleeping Arrangements: The house where you will stay is called the Haitian Queen. There is no AC, but we do have 24-hour electricity. Because it takes a combination of solar, generator, and city power to provide that 24-hour electricity, we do ask you to be conservation-minded. You don’t need any special adaptors for your electronics, but we do highly recommend that you leave most of those items at home and keep them unplugged when not in use. (Usage of hair dryers and curling irons is discouraged). We can sleep 18 people inside our house in three rooms. For larger teams, we also have a bunkhouse on the property. Each room has bunkbeds with mosquito nets and foam or air mattresses. You will be provided with sheets, towels, and pillows. The rooms inside have a ceiling fan. All sleeping quarters have floor fans, and small personal fans are available for your use (bring your own batteries — 4AA or 2D).  There is a safe for valuables; however, due to size limitation, the only items that the Haiti staff can place in the safe are passports/ I.D.s and credit cards. It is recommended that you do not bring valuables to Haiti.

Showers/Toilets: There are two bathrooms inside with showers for individuals to use. We also have two outside shower stalls and two outside toilets. The house is supplied with unheated water for bathing via a well system. Please keep showers short to save water.  Toilet paper must not get flushed down the toilet due to the fragile septic system; instead it is placed into a wastebasket beside the toilet.  We have both potable and unpotable water in the house. The team will show you which faucets are safe to drink from when you arrive. It is suggested that you use potable water to brush your teeth. Most places outside of our home will not have potable water, so please bring a water bottle to carry with you.

Meals: Our cooks will prepare a hot, filling meal every night except Sundays. Sunday dinner, along with all breakfasts and lunches will need to be prepared by your team (see packing list). There is a stove, oven, toaster, coffee maker, pans, and kitchen utensils at your disposal.  If you have any significant dietary needs, please let your team leader know ahead of time so that we can make arrangements together.

Chores: 10

Page 11:   · Web viewMULTIPLYING TRANSFORMATIONAL CHURCHES AMONG ALL PEOPLE Team member Packet. Haiti (Revised March 2019) ReachGlobal Missionary Team:

Team members will be expected to wash their own dishes and generally clean up after themselves. Any food can attract ants, so please be sure to close all food tightly and wipe down all eating/cooking surfaces when you are done using them. We also ask you to help by turning off lights, fans, and faucets when you leave the room.

Laundry: Laundry facilities are not available to team members. We will have a clothesline and bucket for hand washing. If you plan to do hand laundry, please bring your own laundry soap.

EmployeesWe do employ several Haitians to cook, clean, drive, and provide security for us. Some speak English, and some don’t, but we encourage you to engage them and show them your appreciation.

Local Currency: The currency of Haiti is Gourdes, or Goud (Creole spelling). Prices are often referred to in Haitian dollars, which is equivalent to 5 gourdes. You can go to http://www.travelinghaiti.com/haitian-currency.asp to see what the currency looks like and for current exchange rates. However, you won’t have any need for exchanging money during your time. You will be able to use US dollars to buy souvenirs (paintings, wooden sculptures and small jewelry).

Time Difference: Haiti is in the Eastern Time Zone.

Weather: The average temperature in Port-au-Prince is 90°F (27°C). Spring is the rainy season. Hurricane season is from June to November, which means it could be rainy or dry. December through February tend to be dry and a little “cooler.”

Appropriate Behavior:We live in a safe area, but safety is always a bigger concern when you are in an unfamiliar country and an unfamiliar culture. Please stay with the group and make sure we know where you are at all times.  Should you get injured or feel ill during your stay, please let a ReachGlobal Missionary Team member know sooner rather than later.  Keep track of your belongings. We don’t want to create opportunities where people would be tempted to steal.  Please talk to the ReachGlobal Missionary Team members before inviting anyone onto our property.  Do not exchange any of your contact information (including social media) with or give gifts to any of our Haitian employees, interpreters, or neighbors. This is for your protection as well as theirs, and it will help us to maintain healthier long-term relationships. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to a ReachGlobal Missionary Team member.

11

Page 12:   · Web viewMULTIPLYING TRANSFORMATIONAL CHURCHES AMONG ALL PEOPLE Team member Packet. Haiti (Revised March 2019) ReachGlobal Missionary Team:

You are welcome to take pictures while you are here, but please do not take pictures of any people without their permission.  We are here to be learners and we are guests in this culture. Please help us show our respect for the people by trying to adapt to their cultural norms, dressing appropriately (see packing list), and not doing anything to draw too much attention to ourselves. We encourage you to ask questions but ask you to think about the words that you are using, being careful not to offend. Keep in mind that there may be someone within earshot who can understand what you are saying. Many can understand more English than they can speak.

RELEASE OF RIGHTS We live in a world that is full of rights. Our particular culture is one where we take pride in our rights. As a matter of fact, the rights of individuals are constitutional, but as we see the demanding of individual rights increase, we see much of the moral fiber of our society decrease. Our Lord Jesus Christ laid down his rights and all His glory, to the heavens, to become a man and to serve, not to be served. (Phil 2:5-11 and Mark 10:45)

We ask you to consider laying down your rights on this mission trip. Not to lay them down for better or for worse, but to entrust them to the Lord or transfer the responsibility of them to a place of safe keeping. These rights may seem reasonable but on a short-term mission trip they could cause dissension. Would you take time to search your heart and willingness to surrender your rights to the Lord?
