Introductory

Dear parents and students,

As we enter into this new and exciting frontier of LONG DISTANCE LEARNING, I am thrilled to share with you my new music learning initiative, YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAT! This phrase, borrowed from the hit musical, HAIRSPRAY, describes our resoluteness, our unwavering faith, and our dedication to providing our students with a continued, rich, and engaging experience in Catholic Education. For my part, I am given the responsibility of inspiring my students to learn and create in the field of music, and for that, I am extremely grateful. So, let’s start this new educational journey together, with God, and continue to explore the vastness of our musical orbit.

Instructions

Each week you will receive an updated version of this booklet. It will contain the lesson plans, materials, procedures and objectives for your child’s music lesson for the following week. Generally, these will be “stand alone” lessons that teach our students about music theory (notes, rests), music history, music appreciation, music performance and instrumental performance (3rd Grade Recorder). On occasion, a class might receive a lesson segment, which would be a lesson taught over multiple weeks. (That will be indicated)

NOTES:

You will need to print materials. You will need use of a computer with internet access. You will need your Spring Concert Lyric sheets. 3rd Grade will need their Recorders.

Please keep a music folder at home with all of your completed work as I will need to check this work in the near future. (Each of you will build a Music Class Portfolio) Upload all completed work to GOOGLE CLASSROOM.

Parents, if you or your child has any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. (Only parents may email me) I am available Mon-Fri 9:00am-11:30am, 12:30pm-2:30pm

Please prioritize this music instruction as you would any other academic subject. All of our students are unique learners. Music, for many, plays a critical role in their early educational experience.

All students should put their grade, full names and date on all of their work.

(All classes must read the EXIT TICKET – Last page!)

Making Connections

Boys and girls, Leonard Bernstein was the person who wrote the music for the famous musical, WEST SIDE STORY. He was an

extraordinary individual who possessed many musical talents – Composing, Conducting, Piano Playing, Teaching, and leading orchestras

around the world. Dude was awesome!

George Gershwin, whom we learned about last year, was an American Composer and Pianist who was able to take three musical genres

(styles) Classical Music, Jazz and Pop, and mold them to create a whole new sound in the concert hall as well as in the pop music field. He was the equivalent of Lin-Manuel Miranda who created In The Heights and

Hamilton in regards to taking different genres in music, cross-pollinating them, and creating something original, rich, and supper cool!

Lyrics Below

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

Hello, darkness, my old friendI've come to talk with you againBecause a vision softly creepingLeft its seeds while I was sleepingAnd the vision that was planted in my brainStill remainsWithin the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked aloneNarrow streets of cobblestone'Neath the halo of a streetlampI turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were hurtBy the flash of a neon lightThat split the nightAnd touched the sound of silence

And in the blinding light I sawTen thousand people, maybe moreAnd every one of them was desperate to singTo the Lord and Savior Jesus our KingBut instead the people bowed and prayedTo the cross shining in the light, all through the nightAnd whispered, in the sound, of silence
