Restoration Home: Big House

Sunday, 11 December 2011 FinalOnce a building of grandeur and influence, Big House is now a carcass. But digging deep into the archives, the property's historical and architectural roots give an insight into the wealth and power of an empire built on one of the country's most precious commodities - coal.

It also provides an intriguing tale about the dirty tricks of political corruption. Why did this house fall into rack and ruin? Can it ever be returned to its former glory and who can tell what it looked like in its heyday? Owner, Alun, has lived in this part of the world all his life and dreamed of owning Big House ever since he was a small boy, and almost 10 years ago he bought it.

He's got a big job on his hands, progress has been painfully slow but his aim is to turn Big House into a home.

Restoration Home is presented by Caroline Quentin, with social historian Dr Kate Williams and architectural expert Kieran Long.

Who's Been Sleeping In My House?: Invercloy

Monday, 12 December 2011

Invercloy is a grand Federation-style home in Redcliffe, Western Australia where it stands out as a majestic mansion in a sea of suburbia.

But beyond the house's visual charm, George and Pauline Christidis reckon Invercloy spins a special magic, which they can't explain. Prior to moving in two years ago, life with their four young boys was rowdy to say the least. But when they arrived at Invercloy, something short of a miracle occurred - the bickering and fighting stopped and peace descended for the first time. There's no doubt the big, rambling house afforded some breathing room for the boisterous brothers, but Pauline is convinced that the house exudes something more. Her question: what could be behind Invercloy's spell that has worked such wonders on her family?

That's not the only question that hangs in the air for Adam Ford. The family is also convinced they share Invercloy's corridors with a ghostly presence, and it doesn't take long for Adam to corroborate many other tales of supposed sightings.

Finally, wine lover George has a question that's more down to earth. He's heard stories that Invercloy was legendary for its hunting parties in the early twentieth century, and the thirsty guests were well serviced by the house's extensive wine cellars. But the cellars haven't been seen for 60 years, and George is keen to know if they ever existed, and if so, where they could be.

The Grumpy Guide to the Eighties

Tuesday, 13 December 2011 FinalThe Eighties, a decade defined by vacuity, is perhaps best summed up by the dross that passed for pop back then. Geoffrey Palmer narrates a show that puts the monkey boot into Roland Rat, the Rubik's Cube, mullets, Cabbage Patch Kids and Agadoo.

A very-cross-section of Grumps (old and young… ish) wax irritably about the decade that style, taste and decency forgot. The 10 years that saw the rise of rampant consumerism, the Wicked Witch of Westminster, shoulder pads and rubbish hair were a difficult time for those of a disgruntled disposition, so expect their Filofaxes of fury to be positively bulging with caustic memos.

Starring: Penny Smith, Al Murray, Neil Morrissey, Alistair Mcgowan, Ronni Ancona, John Thomson, Shappi Khorsandi, Ed Byrne, Huey Morgan, Fiona Allen, Russell Kane, Mark Radcliffe, Bobby Davro, Donna Mcphail, Mark Steel, Andi Oliver, Matthew Le Tissier and Terry Christian. Narrator: Geoffrey Palmer.

Country House Rescue Revisits

Wednesday, 14 December 2011 New SeriesA while back business woman Ruth Watson came to the rescue of six country houses that were in desperate need of some straight-talking, business advice to save them from crumbling away. For Ruth and the home owners it was a turbulent journey full of family history, ancestral duty and, in many cases, raw emotion. In this series we revisit the six magnificent properties one year on to see if the owners have managed to turn around the fortunes of their stately homes by following Ruth's advice.

Elmore Court is a 25 million pound estate in Gloucestershire that has been in the Guise family for 750 years. It has recently been inherited by 37-year-old Anselm, who has no money and needs a way of making some fast as the house falls into a state of disrepair. There are cracks in the walls, a leaking roof and decaying outbuildings and it's up to Anselm as the latest owner to save this important family seat. Anselm lead a party lifestyle before inheriting Elmore, but now he has been forced to get serious and he needs to put the ideas he has for the house into action, with some help from Ruth Watson.

Anselm has made progress in all areas since Ruth's visit and, most importantly, has met a bride who now lives with him at Elmore. A leak from the water tank has forced them to put the cookery school on hold and start work on the interior of the property and the renovation of an entire wing. In the future however there are plans to develop the cookery school idea into a School of Good Living. It seems Anselm is now more than comfortable in his role of 'Lord of the Manor'.

Outnumbered

Wednesday, 14 December 2011

Outnumbered follows the daily chaos of family life with two parents and three young children locked in an unequal contest (hence the title). Containing elements of improvisation, this comedy is an honest portrayal of the well meaning parental incompetence that happens in most homes, as Mum (Claire Skinner) and Dad (Hugh Dennis) attempt to raise their kids with the minimum of emotional damage for all concerned.

Experience the daily rollercoaster of family life as Mum and Dad try to keep up with the inquisitive and imaginative minds of their three hilarious offspring: The eldest is Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey), a thoughtful eleven year old whose parents are a perpetual embarrassment to him. Then there's Ben (Daniel Roche), a terrifyingly exuberant eight year old who, when his sister locks herself in the bathroom, advises his exasperated Dad to lob beavers in through the window so that they can eat the door. Finally, there's Karen (Ramona Marquez), a five-year-old girl with the looks of an angel and the mind of a barrister, who can demoralise adults at will with her relentless interrogations.

In this episode, Dad is suffering from a terrible hangover, and it seems worse as he struggles against a rising tide of superstition, astrology and conspiracy theories that seem to be taking over the family. Ben takes time off from re-enacting the crusades to show a couple of prospective buyers around the house.

River Cottage: Everyday: Meat

Thursday, 15 December 2011 New SeriesAuthor and presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, takes river cottage back to the nation, demonstrating that the RC philosophy has relevance and a use for everyone on a daily basis. Hugh examines the British relationship with eight categories; meat, fish, veg, fruit, bread, lunch, breakfast and finally treats, and then shows how these relationships can be significantly improved by injecting a bit of river cottage attitude.

The series is a practical manifesto - not just a guide of how to make the most of cheap cuts of meat, or what to look for when buying fish. It will also arm the viewer with an approach to buying and cooking.

Episode One – Meat

Hugh sets out his belief that the way to make organic free-range meat fit your budget, is to eat and enjoy cheap cuts rather than cheap meat.

He's off to a butcher to champion these passionate meat practitioners and sell the cheapest cut in the shop - ox liver. Devilled in a hot and spicy sauce, it proves to be a real winner.

Hugh takes his passion for cheap, cheerful and hearty stews to a local five-a-side team, where he suffers footballing failure but success in setting up a communal stew club.

Back at Park Farm, there are also stocks, dumplings and the perfect spag bol. And, because it's about meat, the episode ends with a BBQ.

Going Postal

Saturday, 17 December 2011 New SeriesGoing Postal is the story of arch-swindler Moist Von Lipwig (Richard Coyle) and the beautiful, vengeful Adora Belle Dearheart (Claire Foy).

A life-long travelling con-artist, Lipwig's crimes finally catch up with him in the town of Ankh-Morpork. Faced with death by hanging, Lipwig is spared by Lord Vetinari (Charles Dance), who sees him as the perfect man for the role of Postmaster in the decrepit Ankh-Morpork post office.

Faced with an almost impossible task, and making an immediate enemy of bloodthirsty tyrant Reacher Gilt (David Suchet), owner of the rival money-hungry Grand Trunk Clacks communication monopoly, Lipwig's first instinct is to run. That is until he meets the spellbinding Adora. Captivated by her beauty and her brains, Lipwig will try anything to win her affections… little knowing the part he has played in her family's downfall.
