MORE SIGNIFICANT THINGS THAT WERE HAPPENING AT THIS TIME ACROSS THE WORLD?A half-century ago, the war in Vietnam continued its escalation, National Service conscripts fly out from Richmond RAAF base in Sydney bound for Vietnam. NASA’s Project Gemini was completed after ten manned launches, and the USSR successfully landed a vehicle on the Moon. The first Automated Teller Machine (ATM) was introduced, along with miniaturized televisions, while race riots and anti-war protests swept the World. Charles Whitman shot and killed 14 people from his perch atop a tower at the University of Texas at Austin, and doctors at the Veterans Administration hospital in New Jersey conducted medical tests on 10 beagles, attaching them to machines designed to let them smoke cigarettes for years. Robert Menzies, Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister, retired and is succeeded by Harold Holt. The Beaumont children are abducted during a visit to Glenelg beach in Adelaide and are never seen again. Decimalisation of the Australian currency; the Australian dollar replaces the Australian pound at the rate of ten shillings to the dollar. Clubs can sell alcohol on Sundays, driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.05% becomes a criminal offence. In troubled times I want to remove myself from the troubles, ignore them, run away from the world. When I look at the world today, like many people it would be easy to do just that. But God is not dead and he is even more powerful than whatever is happening in the world at this moment. God made flesh in the birth of Jesus shows me that even death has no hold over Him.

One of the things that I decided to do each day during Lent was to spend more time in contemplating God’s creation.

Each day I have committed myself to spend at least 15 minutes in the stillness of the early morning, the late evening or during the day at Emmanuel Centre, just watching all of God’s creations. Spending time in what God has created gives me God’s resilience and grace as I witness the power of God in the diversity. I have met willy wagtails, groups of ibis pecking at unseen things in the lawn, the tiny ants walking in line across the cement slabs, the sparkle in the pools of rain, the different feelings of wind in my hair and on my face, the beauty of the Moreton bay fig trees in the church grounds and the different calls of the birds, including the sound of the crows, depending what bird and time of the day it is. This is just a few I can remember. All creation is made in the image and likeness of God. Every dust speck, every human being no matter what faults or failings, we are all made in love and we do not have to earn God’s love. He/she freely gives us unconditional love.More and more as we continue our Lenten journey I know I will be given many many opportunities to love others. All are God’s creations. Those people who challenge me by their behaviours, by their attitude to others, by their goals about what life is about. But they too are loved by God unconditionally and I will be asked to be nonjudgmental, forgiving, welcoming. Once I accept this God will meet me in every encounter, but he/she still allows me the freedom to choose grace to meet others in love.

WE READ IN THE BIBLE THAT JESUS CELEBRATED THE PASSOVER WITH HIS DISCIPLES

The Catholic Catechism (1096) under the heading “ Jewish liturgy and Christian liturgy says, “ A better knowledge of the Jewish people's faith and religious life even now can help our better understanding of certain aspects of Christian liturgy. For both Jews and Christians Sacred Scripture, is an essential part of their respective liturgies…… Christians and Jews both celebrate the Passover.

For Jews, it is the Passover of history, tending toward the future; For Christians, it is the Passover fulfilled in the death and Resurrection of Christ” and why we have

the Eucharist today.

EMMANUEL’S ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTSFor 25 years Emmanuel has been involved in RECYCLE NEWSPAPERS, CARDBOARD, BOOKS, PAMPHLETS AND OFFICE PAPER. Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,000 kilowatts of energy-enough to power the average Australian home for six months-and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one metric ton of carbon equivalent (MTCE). Last year Emmanuel’s efforts saved nearly 800 trees. “I will leave you to do the maths to demonstrate what other effects this had”. We want to thank all those people who dropped off newspapers etc at Emmanuel Centre and we thank the parishes that provide bins for collecting and then bringing the papers to Emmanuel

ABORIGINAL AND CHRISTIAN LITURGICAL ART COMPETITION ENTRIES WELCOMED (from the e-record)

Schools and parish communities are being encouraged to take part in the 2019 Catholic Liturgical Art Competition, inspired by Aboriginal knowledge and the Catholic faith, set to take place in conjunction with the NAIDOC week celebrations in July. The theme of the competition “Our Sacred Song Lines Upon This Earth”, aims to represent the Catholic faith and Aboriginal culture’s commitment to the stewardship of all creation. The collaborative effort by Aboriginal Catholic Ministry (ACM), the Archdiocesan Centre for Liturgy and Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) will work to design and create artworks that can be used in the liturgical and prayer life of the parishes and schools in the Archdiocese of Perth.Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton said the art competition is a unique opportunity for schools and parishes to connect and embark on a spiritual journey through the eyes of young artists, as they unlock for us through art, the breadth of God in the wonder of His creation. ACM Director Vicky Burrows said the competition

was officially launched on Monday 3 December 2018 together, with a workshop and information day conducted by a local Aboriginal artist.Ms Burrows added that the competition will be judged in four categories, namely: Primary, Secondary, Group Entry, and Open Group.Winners will be announced during NAIDOC week (artwork may be made into an item for use by the Archdiocese) and the works will be exhibited at the Angelico Exhibition for Primary and Secondary Schools and Colleges in August 2019.If you’re interested, contact us and we could give you a copy of the competition guidelines. For other queries, contact ACM Director Vicky Burrows via email on [email protected] or CEWA Curriculum Coordinator Genevie Baker [email protected]
