Speakers’ biographies

Tony Seba

Tony Seba is a world-renowned thought leader, author, speaker, educator and Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Seba is the author of the #1 Amazon best-selling book “Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation” and co-author of “Rethinking Transportation 2020-2030". He is the award-winning creator of the Seba Technology Disruption Framework™. His work focuses on technology disruption, the convergence of technologies, business model innovation, and product innovation that is leading to the disruption of the world’s major industries.

Seba has been a keynote speaker at hundreds of global events and organizations including Google, the European Commission, Davos, COP21, CLSA, J.P. Morgan, Nomura and Global Leaders Forum. He has taught thousands of entrepreneurs and corporate leaders at Stanford Continuing Studies. Seba has a Stanford MBA and an MIT degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

Pierpaolo Cazzola

Pierpaolo Cazzola is a Senior Energy and Transport Analyst at the International Energy Agency (IEA). He coordinates the work of the transport unit of the IEA Energy Technology Policy Division in the Directorate of Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks, including the development of the IEA Mobility Model.

Previously, Cazzola worked at the United Nations (as Secretary of the Working Group on Pollution and Energy of the World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations), the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, and the Environment Directorate of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Energy Statistics Division of the IEA.

Cazzola received master degrees in aerospace engineering, aeronautics and energy economics from the Polytechnic of Turin, the University of Glasgow and the Institut Français du Pétrole.

Tomio Harada

Tomio Harada is the Director for Natural Resources and Energy Research at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and the Chair of the APEC Low-Carbon Model Town (LCMT) taskforce. The LCMT project aims to combine energy-efficient buildings, transport and power systems to create communities that affordably reduce energy use and carbon emissions while creating pleasant living conditions.

Between 2008 and 2012, Harada was the General Manager of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation’s (JOGMEC) office in Sydney, Australia.

Chris White

For 12 years, Chris White has led communications, outreach and marketing for the California Fuel Cell Partnership. She and her team have created some of the most-used outreach materials for fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen stations, including an award-winning social media campaign and a software system or hydrogen stations.

White also works with plug-in vehicles and charging, and with autonomous vehicles and connected infrastructure. She is well versed in the regulatory, social, and economic issues that need to be addressed to introduce disruptive technologies.

For most of her career, she has created communications strategies for new technology products and for five years was a spokesperson for IBM. She has a master’s degree in communications and is an active volunteer for economic development in the city of West Sacramento, California where she lives and works.

Behyad Jafari

As the CEO of the Electric Vehicle Council, Behyad works with industry, government and the media to accelerate the electrification of road transport, for a more sustainable and prosperous Australia.

With experience advising politicians, businesses and non-profits, Behyad has a strong understanding of Australia’s political, corporate and media landscape.

Liz Yeaman

Liz Yeaman is the Transport, Development Manager at the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (EECA), New Zealand. Yeaman first joined EECA in 1996 and has worked in a wide variety of roles covering transport, local government and renewables.

Yeaman holds a Masters’ degree in Natural Resource Engineering and prior to joining EECA worked in engineering and fuels consultancy, mainly on transport energy projects in developing countries. She is a member of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (NZ).

Dr Shu-Yii Wu

Dr Shu-Yii Wu is the CEO of the APEC Research Center for Advanced Biohydrogen Technology. His other current positions include:

Dean of the College of Engineering, Feng Chia University, Chinese Taipei

President, Chimica Verde Bionet Asia Pacific Association Chair holder, UKM-YSD, Malaysia.

He has a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Katholieke University Leuven, Belgium, and his research interests include ethanol, bioreactors, biogas, biomass, bioprocess engineering and fermentation technology, and environmental biotechnology.

Dr Chen-Yeon Chu

Dr Chen-Yeon Chu is the Executive Secretary of APEC Research Center for Advanced Biohydrogen Technology. He is also the Acting Director for Master’s Program of Green Energy Science and Technology and Chief of International Cooperation Division, Green Energy Development Center (GEDC), Feng Chia University, Chinese Taipei. He serves as the secretaries of Asia Bio-HyLinks and the Chinese Taipei’s chapter of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

He has a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Tsing Hua University, Chinese Taipei. His research interests cover fermentative biohydrogen energy technology, green hydrogen energy technology and economy, green energy demonstration system of biological technology, talent training in biomass energy technology, hydrodynamic and kinetics in a fermenter system, and bioreactor design.

Catherine Clennett

Cathy Clennett is passionate about developing new growth businesses. She has held senior engineering, project, and construction management roles in the resources and telecommunications industries, and has worked internationally with start-ups and universities commercialising new technologies.

She has a wide range of commercial and finance experience, and was a senior member of Todd Corporation’s investment team prior to founding Hiringa Energy. Hiringa Energy’s vision is to create a zero emission, hydrogen energy future for New Zealand by supplying hydrogen to meet business and community energy needs. Hiringa Energy will develop hydrogen projects that create and aggregate market demand, and will build, own and operate hydrogen infrastructure.

Victoria Coad

Victoria Coad is a skilled electricity industry executive who has worked in the NZ sector for over 25 years. She has extensive experience across a broad variety of areas including electricity industry reform, market design and regulatory arrangements. She holds a BSc Hons (First Class) in Management Science from the University of Canterbury.

David Rohan

David Rohan has 19 years of experience in the energy sector in a wide range of roles in both the public and private sectors. Rohan has a broad background in electricity generation project development, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas abatement analysis, and the commercial assessment of emerging energy technologies. He has a Bachelor of Engineering degree (mechanical) from the University of Canterbury.

Dr Jonathan Leaver

Associate Professor Jonathan Leaver has worked in the Department of Civil Engineering at Unitec, Auckland, New Zealand, since 1998. Before joining Unitec, he worked from 1981 to 1988 as a geothermal reservoir engineer for the Ministry of Works and Development while from 1990 to 1997 he was the Chief Petroleum and Geothermal Inspector for the Ministry of Commerce.

Leaver is a Vice-Chair of the IEA Hydrogen Technology Collaboration Programme, a Fellow of Engineers New Zealand and in 2010 was a plenary speaker at the U.S. National Hydrogen Association Conference in Long Beach. He is an author of more than 50 publications and has served on nine national and international committees in the energy sector. His recent research is focused on energy-economic modelling and signal processing.

Leaver holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons)(Civil) and a postgraduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology from the University Auckland; a Master of Science in petroleum engineering from Stanford University, and a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Auckland.

Dr Linda Wright

Linda Wright has a PhD in Sustainable Waste Management and a BSc (1st Class Hons) in Environmental Risk Management from the Engineering Department of the University of Wales, Cardiff.

During her 22-year career as a sustainability consultant, Wright has provided hands-on expertise and strategic advice to a wide range of private sector organisations, central government departments, local authorities and community groups.

Wright is the Founding Director of the New Zealand FCEV Consortium, which focuses on reducing New Zealand’s emissions using renewable hydrogen for heavy vehicle and maritime transportation and industrial process heat. The Consortium, which comprises some of New Zealand’s largest companies, is

collaborating with global leaders in renewable hydrogen capability to deliver a regional hydrogen model that can be replicated throughout New Zealand to meet domestic and possible export demand. Initial demonstration projects are to be based in the Southland region and Auckland.

Dr Robert Holt

Dr Robert Holt is the Greentech Team Leader at Callaghan Innovation, a government agency supporting hi-tech businesses in New Zealand. His team is researching into and developing the HyLinkTM technology for the production and storage of renewable hydrogen.

Mark Booth

Mark is Deputy General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation’s New Zealand subsidiary Mitsubishi New Zealand Ltd. He manages both new and legacy power systems business, and energy-related trading and investment studies including those involving transportation and infrastructure. Since joining the company in 1989 he has managed the company’s involvement in several large capital projects involving geothermal and natural gas combined-cycle electric power, the electric passenger trains for Auckland and various coal, naphtha and diesel fuel import and export transactions.

He is a graduate from Auckland University and has completed an in-house Business Management Program run by the Harvard Business School.

Facilitator: John HancockJohn Hancock is a well-known energy utilities consultant and commentator. He chaired the New Zealand Electricity Authority’s Wholesale Advisory Group until it was disbanded earlier this year and convenes the New Zealand Smart Grid Forum.

Much of his work draws on his combination of deep experience in both technology and deregulation - key dimensions of the strategic environment in the sector.

John has a 25-year career in the utilities industry around the world including 14 years with Ernst & Young Consulting, Capgemini and Hewlett Packard in the Asia Pacific.
