Arc GIS ePortfolio assignment 1. I selected the Imagery base map because I like to look at things how they actually are on the earth. It is like looking at images from google earth, and looking at the earth and maps that way is what I like and find the most interesting and engaging. There are many theme layers that could work well with this type of base map. Of course World Imagery is one as it is an Imagery base map. The ones that I am interested in that would work well with this type of map include but are not limited to theme layers such as the different natural disaster layers, world transportation, and world boundaries and places. 2. The highest income block group is more than $82,000 a year and it is the dark green areas of the map. The lowest income block group is $24,000 or less and it is the lightest brown areas of the map. 3. The spatial relationship between the 2 layers is that for the most part the areas close to the trolley line are lower income block groups and as you move farther away from the trolley lines you start to move into the higher income block groups. 4. The blue line and the green line both run parallel to the fault lines. The blue line runs parallel to the fault for a longer distance but is further away from the fault, the green line also runs parallel to it for a short distance very close to the actual fault. 5. From the sections that would show me a name when I clicked on them it said the name was the Newport-Inglewood - Rose Canyon fault zone, and there were a few different sections that ran parallel to the trolley lines. 6. The Maps are used to show statistical data about specific subject areas, they are meant to give you detailed information about different geographical data, and have been created and put together by others. The Web Apps are tools that are available to use to come up with different statistical data. You can use the different web apps to help with research and the creation of your own maps that you can save and share with others. My example for Maps was the earthquake web map. Arc GIS ePortfolio assignment

I really liked this map and the data that it provided because I am very interested in earthquakes and other natural disasters and it is a continuously updated map of earthquake data for the last 90 days. I also like that the source of the data is from the USGS so you know the data is coming from a trusted and reliable source. The only thing I didn’t like about the map is that it only shows you data for the last 90 days and I think it would be good to have more historical data as well. My example for Web Apps was Landscape Analyst I think that the app could be very useful to different professionals that need easy and quick access to analytical data about landscape locations that are specific to what they are searching for, that’s what I like about it. The main thing I don’t like about the Web Apps is that they cannot be used with just a public account. You have to have a subscription to use them so I think it would be better if everyone had access to them and the ability to use them.

7. The main differences between the maps version and web apps version of the trolley map is that the web app version cannot really be manipulated or changed anymore. With the map version you can add or removal layers and change the content or data that is seen or shown in the map. Also in the web apps version the legend is on the right hand side and is always shown and tells you the details about what each layer and data on the map actually is. I would prefer the maps version if you are working on something that would be changing a lot or you need to update it on a really regular basis I think that what you can do with this system is really cool. But the web

apps one is much cleaner and nicer looking and would make a much better choice for publication and display.

8. http://bit.ly/1kmHNHp This is the URL to the map I created. I used a light gray canvas as my base map. I chose to do a map of Indiana as I may be moving there in the near future for work. I put one two layers one was an affordability index overlay that shows the percentage of a family’s income that is put towards housing costs and expenses. The other layer is a tornado tracks index and with that you can look at the track of tornados in the area, so I could see how often they hit that area. There is a slider at the bottom of the map that lets you change the date ranges you want to look at for the tornado tracks. I had mine set from 1998 to 2010. There were more tornadoes in that area than I was aware of.

9. http://www.arcgis.com/apps/OnePane/basicviewer/index.html?appid=edb26746acec4ffb8fb9a9b1c3c4a94c This is the URL for the web app. I selected the basic viewer template for my web app. The differences between the map and the web app are that the map you can still add more layers or make any other changes that you would like or are needed. Also the webs app as a cleaner and more professional look to it and it is a good way to present and view data and it is very easy to read and understand what you are looking at.
