Examples of limericks to read or learn:

The fabulous Wizard of Oz

Retired from the business becoz,

What with up-to-date science,

To most of his clients

He wasn’t the wiz that he woz.

There was a Young Lady of Norway,

Who causally sat in a doorway;

When the door squeezed her flat,

She exclaimed, “What of that?”

This courageous Young Lady of Norway.

Edward Lear

There was an old man from Vancouver,

Whose wife got stuck in the Hoover.

He said, “There’s some doubt

If she’s more in than out

But whichever it is, I can’t move her.”

How to write a limerick:

A canner, exceedingly canny,

One morning remarked to his granny,

“A canner can can

Anything that he can;

But a canner can’t can a can, can he?”

There was a young fellow named Weir,

Who hadn’t an atom of fear.

He indulged a desire

To touch a live wire.

(Almost any last line will do here).

An incompetent sailor named Scott

Tried crossing the Channel by yacht.

A storm blew him off course,

So he tapped out in Morse:

…_ _ _ …

1. Mind map char a cter s o r animals . Character Animal

Examples: A boy named JackThe Queen of HeartsA young woman named Sue

Examples: A lazy house catClumsy old monkeyBig, Grumpy Bulldog

2. Next, to w ri te the fir s t line , decide where they are from or end with their name/animal type. This will form the rhyme for 3 lines! Your first line needs to be between 8-10 syllables.

Places that rhyme well Names that rhyme wellWalesPeruSpain

JackSuecatdog

Examples:

There was a young lady of Spain (8 syllables)

Said a foolish householder from Wales (10 syllables)

3. Find words that rhyme with your first line. This will help you to write lines 2 and 5.

Kate mate, fate, late, hate, rate, great, debate, state, collaborate, separate,

4. Write your second line. Use the words you have collected in step 3 to help form your sentence. You might want to use a relative pronoun within your second line. E.g. who, where, when…Try to keep the number of syllables the same as your first line (between 8 and 10). Examples

Who went to a fancy dress ball (8 syllables)

Who was so exceedingly neat (8 syllables)

Whose body was lighter than cork (8 syllables)

With a pain in his stomach did moan (9 syllables)

5. Wr i te lines 3 and 4. These lines are shorter (approx 6 syllables) and have their own rhyme. Examples:

When he finished his work

He remarked with a smirk

Half-way round the course,

“That’s enough!” said the horse

“I’m Thor!” he cried,

And the mouse replied,

There once was a gnu in the zoo (9 syllables)

A bow-legged policeman from Kew (8 syllables)

6. Finish yo u r last line. It needs to rhyme with lines 1 and 2 and have 8-10 syllables depending on what you have written before. They are often surprising and sometimes silly.Examples

And when he awoke, he was dead.

Was collected in seventeen pails.

She slipped through the straw and fell in.

And now she is silent- rejoice!

Quick recap:

A limerick’s cleverly versed-

The second line rhymes with the first:

The third one is short,

The fourth’s the same sort,

And the last line is often the worst.
