Comparing Local Doctors with Expatriate Doctors

As a developing country, Indonesia owns hundreds of competent local doctors whograduated from local universities. On the other sides, we have seen lots of expatriate doctorscoming to Indonesia to either open their own hospital or work at the local hospital. Those twotypes of doctors have their own characteristics to differentiate them from one another. The majordifferences that are visible to be observed are the differences on their motivation, professionalism, and ethical sides.

The motivation of local doctors and expatriate doctors are different. Their motivation tocure a person might be the same but other than that it is completely different. Local doctors havetheir main motivation from their families who live in the same country. They also tend tounderstand more about the diseases and the epidemiology of the diseases in Indonesia. This canbe a motivation to work and finish their job better because they already understood and studiedon field about it. Local doctors also have been trying to exceed expatriate doctors ability. A hugemotivation is also needed in order to do that. On the other hand, expatriate doctors also havesignificant amount of motivations that strengthen their will to work in other countries. Eventhough they are thousands of miles away from their family, the thought of making their families

proud is one of the motivations to keep on going. They also have motivation to study a lot moreabout the diseases in that country where they are staying in. Despite the fact that they are not intheir home countries, those motivations can push them to move forward and survive.

The second aspect that differentiates them from each other is their professionalism.Wecannot make a biased conclusion to see which doctors are more professional. Both areprofessional in their own way. Local doctors, as what have been said before, understand moreabout the disease and epidemiology. That can be a reason why they are asked or even expected tobe professional on field. They also have their own set of guidelines in order to be professional. Those guidelines are written in the KODEKI (Ethical Codes of Indonesian Doctors). Comparing

to the local doctors, expatriate doctors are also professional because they know that they are inother countries and they need to show that doctors from their countries can also be professionalin other countries. Furthermore, they can also study the KODEKI and understand howIndonesians perceive professional as. The last but not least, expatriate doctors probably havebetter equipment in their own countries. Because of that, most of the times they are veryprofessional in diagnosin g patients diseases.

The last distinction and probably the most visible of all is on their ethical sides. As wehave known local doctors lived, grew up, and studied in their own countries almost in their entirelife. Without any doubt, they at least must have understood the ethical sides in their owncountries. Besides that, they also have the KODEKI to be obeyed and applied on field. Incontrast, expatriate doctors might have understood only a bit of the ethical sides. After all theyare from different countries with different cultures that taught them different ethical sides.Despite that, there must be the same basic ethics that are the same. This will make it a bit easierfor expatriate doctors. For further understanding of the ethical sides, they can study the KODEKIand learn it on field.

In conclusion, both local and expatriate doctors are competent and have their ownabilities. Local doctors might need to learn from the expatriate doctors and vice versa. Despitetheir differences, they are doctors whose job is to provide the best health care to the patients. Nomatter how much they need to learn, how long they need to adapt, they are required to do thesein order to do their job in the best way they can be.
