On Saturday, January 14th, our leadership task force had our second meeting with our consultant, Rev. Dr. Sharon Barley. During this meeting, she shared a great deal of information with us. A personal invitation is extended to everyone ages 60 and older in our church family to a new year of XYZ (Xtra Years of Zest) Fellowship activities!!! XYZ Fellowship is the adult ministry group at Cornwall United Methodist Church open to everyone ages 60 and older. Throughout the year we enjoy social gatherings and celebrations and also want to be involved in community service. The community service outreach can be arranged for individuals as well as a group. I hope you will consider how you can be a part of this adult ministry. We have an opportunity to begin planning for a new year of XYZ Fellowship events. •1st Planning Committee meeting is Wednesday, February 15th, 1:30 P.M.

The location will be given closer to the date. Please contact me, Margaret Sowers, at 717-272-9703 or via email [email protected]. I will look forward to hearing from you before February 8th should you have questions, suggestions and would like to become a part of the Planning Committee. We welcome you to this exciting fellowship.

(continued from page 1) All the benchmarks point to this reality that we must all face together. To move to a highly-engaged, highly- energetic congregation we must change as God calls us. Knowing where we are makes it easier to get where we want to go. We start by seeking God’s direction in prayer with a desire to fulfill our call as disciples of Jesus Christ. As we accept where we are now, and seek to understand what is changing in the environment that has and will impact us in the future, we will gain a clear and courageous vision for what the church looks like when we are growing in grace and in the love of Christ, and growing in numbers. Together we can all decide with intention: “from where we are now” how do we get to “the vision of where we want to be”, and what do we all need to do to get there? That’s the change process. It involves all of us. God calls us to be willing to hear this call. It has your name on it. We are planning a church retreat to reveal our results but more to gather the collective voices, prayers, and creativity to form consensus for the core strategies and champion teams (to head these strategies) and to seek the blessing of God on our church and our witness to draw people into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Sunday School Class Seminar

Subject Matter: Islam and Christianity

Main Question: “Do We Worship the Same God?”

Date: MARCH 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, 2017

Speaker: Dr. Douglas Buckwalter

Location: Cornwall United Methodist Church 50 Freeman Drive, Lebanon, PA 17042 Contact Info: Lucas B. Ndaro, Director of Adult Ministries Phone: (717) 272-0148 [email protected]

The Department of Adult Ministries at Cornwall United Methodist Church will be hosting a Sunday School seminar on Islam and Christianity in March, 2017. Dr. Douglas Buckwalter, professor of New Testament at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown will be our guest speaker. Among other questions Dr. Buckwalter will seek to answer the question of whether Muslims and Christians worship the same God.

This critical question deserves much attention not only for the respect Muslims and Christians need to give to each other but also to understand some of the fundamental theological differences that exist among the two religions. Both religions originated in the Middle East and, therefore, one must expect some similarities and differences between them. Sometimes the similarities are so close that they are easily confused as the same thing or the differences are so obvious that they are condemned altogether. This Sunday School seminar hopes to highlight and clarify some of these issues.

We hope you will mark your calendar and take advantage of learning from one of the profoundly and humbly knowledgeable New Testament scholars whom God has gifted to the Christian church. This class will meet in the chapel from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Sunday School classes for children from K-5th grades are concurrently available.

Groceries Give Back Our grocery and gas card sales have started off with a bang! The Groceries Give Back program has sold over $363,480 in grocery and gas cards, with a profit of $32,085 in 2016. You are helping this program grow and we have used $13,800 to date in funding mission projects! If you haven’t tried using a grocery card from Musser’s, Giant or Weis or a gas card from Sheetz, give it a try this year. Stop by the table on Sunday or the church office Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. to purchase your cards. Thank you for supporting this program. We are also looking for a few people who would be interested in selling cards after the early and late services. Please contact Tanya Voris at 277-0192 or [email protected]. Thank you!

Kids Worship… Congratulations to all the children who were able to take their first communion. Each

year we do this in January/February for anyone in 2nd grade or above. Teaching them the

meaning of communion is always a blessing.

The children are learning new stories in each of the classes. We will continue to collect

offerings in all three classes.

Club 54 has a new policy: the children should remain in the services until after the chil-

dren's sermon. Then they may come down with the rest of the kids and go to their classroom.

This is so no one misses any information and they can enjoy the class equally.

February 17th we will be hosting “kids’ night in/parents’ night out”. This will take place

from 5:30- 8:30 P.M. Drop off and pick up will be in fellowship hall. Look for information in

the bulletin. If you are available to help please see Sarah Derr or Amanda Hollich.

(continued from page 5) In addition to our regular mission giving this year, we also supported the following: Heifer Project $140 Evangelical Seminary $500 CWS—Crop Walk $500 Lebanon Rescue Mission $1,000 HUB $590 Cedar Crest High School $50 Students for Christ

Profits from the Holiday Bazaar ($4,666.19) were divided between the Lebanon Rescue Mission, UMCOR U.S. Disaster Relief, the Family Life Counseling Centers in Tanzania as well as to our church for continued mission support. The Groceries Give Back program sold over $363,480 in grocery and gas cards. In 2016 alone, we saw $1,511.15 in profit that will be used to help fund mission projects. We hosted the Temporary Homeless Shelter twice for two weeks each time. This required many volunteers to keep it running smoothly. Thank you to everyone who helped make all of this possible.

Homeless Shelter

The homeless shelter will be hosted by our church starting February 27 through March 13. We would love to see families sign up to help check in and serve snacks to our guests on Friday and Saturday nights. By hosting the shelter we provide an environment where our guests can encounter God's love and grace. If you are willing to volunteer for this mission please fill out the insert in the bulletin and return it by February 5th. If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Snyder [email protected] 717 383-3387.

Homeless Shelter Snack Donation Request We have been able to stretch our money for the snacks for the homeless shelter because we were able to carry remaining money from one year to another, but now our funds have been depleted and we have to ask the congregation for additional funds. Since we will not know how many guests to plan for on any given day, rather than requesting specific items from our volunteers, we felt that it would be best to shop as necessary to provide these items. For that reason, we are requesting donations towards the purchase of the food items. Cash or check donations should be put in the envelope found in each service, marked “Homeless Shelter Donation” be sure to include your envelope number and/or your name. (This helps the counters on Sunday morning). If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Text or call 717-507-6023 cell (please include your name) or 717-272-8263 home. Thank you in advance for your generous help and kindness. Jean Bonneville

MISSION OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY

Agape Family Shelter

Kathy Snavely, Mission Committee

As a part of the Lebanon Rescue Mission, Agape Family Shelter is an outreach ministry

providing housing for women and their children who want to make positive changes in their lives.

Pre-admission interviews for every family take place, outlining the program and taking the first steps

in setting goals for new directions. Staff meet with each woman on a regular basis to discuss

progress toward those goals. Two recent program participants are Tamera and Doris.

Tamera, 19, was living on her own when she came to Agape Family Shelter. She had no family

and was working multiple jobs to pay for an apartment that had recently been condemned. Worse, her

health was in jeopardy; she had been exposed to dangerous mold in the apartment and was

exhausted from working around the clock. When she came to Agape, Tamera immediately found the

safety she needed and received free health care at the Lebanon Free Clinic. Tamera found a retail

job and began saving her earnings. Over the course of her stay, the shelter director taught Tamera

how to drive, and she passed her driving test. Finally, she was accepted to a student internship that

provided housing. Healthy and happy, Tamera moved out of Agape and into a bright new future.

Doris, 38, was a single mother who had given up custody of two of her three children due to

homelessness. When she came to Agape Family Shelter, she had been moving from place to place,

unable to provide for the 9-year-old daughter in her care. Upon arrival at the shelter, Doris

immediately began to look for work. She found a full-time position at a local factory, and went to

work every day, rain or shine. Eventually, she was given greater responsibility and a promotion. At

Agape, Doris learned to budget her income and began saving money for her family's future. She

found a church and began attending every Sunday. Now, she is looking toward the future and being

reunited with her children.

Your prayers and financial support make miracles like this possible! Thank you for your

continued support!!

P.S. The Rescue Mission initiated a new program this year; Agape Christ-

mas is a Christ-centered Christmas program honoring older adults and seniors in

Lebanon County. In its first year, Agape Christmas will provide more than 500

senior citizens and special needs adults with food, gifts, and fellowship.

Five-hundred seniors received a festive reusable shopping bag filled with gifts,

including groceries, snacks (and food to make a simple Christmas dinner),

beautiful hardcover devotionals and large-print Bible puzzle books that will uplift

them throughout the holiday season. That's unconditional love (the meaning of

Agape) in action!!
