PAWSPrints We’re on our way!

E…X…P…A…N…S…I…O…N growth…development…increase….extension

You may have noticed that PAWS is growing. We have been talking about that (and doing that) for the past

several years. Now we’re ready to do more than add teams/and sites and programs. Now we’re ready to provide

you with a new headquarters/training center, additional staff, and an expanded “PAWprint.”

Remember last issue when we talked about a Three Phase Expansion Project? We have done all our homework,

written some of our grants, and developed a plan for sustained growth (Phase One.) Phase Two (which we’re in

right now) involves the hiring of a full time Training Coordinator (welcome, Rachel Snijders) and finding a new

place we can grow into (we’ve found it but are still in negotiations.) Phases Two and Three involve a need for

increased funding. Part of that we hope will come from some of you. A HUGE part has come from two generous

foundations that approved our grant requests and granted us funding to give us a great start toward our final goal.

Curious as to how much? Ready to be proud?

Welfare Foundation - $50,000 Longwood Foundation - $185,650

We are pleased and delighted to have gained the trust and support of both of these foundations and now have

$235,650 toward our goal of $381,362. As you can see, we still have a ways to go, but we’re confident that

together we can get to that goal and even, hopefully, surpass it.

We still have to fund our 2016 - 2018 budgets = operating costs won’t go away because we have this funding. So

let’s be clear – these 2 grants and hopefully some additional ones will cover the costs for only what is stipulated in

the grant requests: additional staffing, site for training and staff, increased training opportunities, and the increase

in the number of teams we support. We’ll have to raise the rest.

All this is doable. All this is a natural progression for PAWS – to do exactly what we do now in more places with

more people while all the while keeping up our high standards and great customer service. In fact, with this

development, we should be able to give YOU more, extending our current services and increasing your options.

This is all very exciting. A little unsettling for some. A little scary for others. For me? I say, bring it on!

It’s time for PAWS for People to be proactive regarding the increasing demand in our services and the potential

growth we can experience. So when our new site is definitely ours (to rent), you will be invited to come cut

ribbons and enjoy the space. Some of you have already met Rachel and seen what a great trainer she is. Some of

you will become trainers and help us offer PAWS to folks in the outer regions of our PAWprint. We will offer

more PAWS U classes and faster response time and bask in the light of a carefully planned, sustainable expansion.

Thank you to our PAWS friends ~your dedication every day over the past eleven years built a strong foundation

for expanding our “PAWprint” and unleashing more PAWS ‘magic’! Lynne

toward becoming a pet therapy team through PAWS to

take advantage of the courses we offer.

Tricks of the Trade: Come learn valuable “tricks” that

keep your pup's focus on you around distractions. Thursdays, 6:30 PM, 1st session 7/28

Advanced Skills Training for the Therapy Dog: Want to up your therapy game? This is the place for

strengthening all basic obedience skills. Thursdays, 7:30 PM, 1st session 7/28

In loving memory of... Toby Stephens, adored pup of

Susan Stephens, joined the ranks

of PAWS therapy dogs in 2013.

Toby brought companionship

and joy to hundreds of children

at the Garnet Valley Elementary

School and the Kirkwood Library.

Spike Klein had a singular

goal in mind when he and his

human, Pete Klein, went

visiting. Sunrise of

Wilmington was the place to

go and the mission was to

bring smiles to the faces of the

elders in both the assisted living as well as the

dementia area. Spike joined PAWS in 2013.

Please welcome our new Training Coordinator…

Rachel Snijders

Two words jumped out at me when I first spoke to

Lynne Robinson, our Executive Director, on the

phone during my first interview: “dogs” and

“therapy.” What a wonderful combination! Lynne’s

enthusiasm grabbed my attention immediately and I

felt her passion within minutes. When she told me

that the position of Training Coordinator was vacant,

I knew that this was what I wanted to do.

I am delighted to be part of the PAWS for People

family! Not only does PAWS have an excellent

reputation for the great work being done by our

volunteer visiting therapy teams, but bringing caring

communities together is par for the course. As the

Training Coordinator, I will endeavor to take

education to further outreaches in the four states that

we currently serve.

With the assistance of our very competent office staff,

our therapy teams in the field and many loyal

supporters in the public and corporate arenas, the

training department will grow from strength to

strength.

One of my newly-assigned

tasks here at the PAWS office

is keeping track of the

Volunteers’ monthly Visits

& Hours Log. Not only are

we are proud of the time

you’ve put in each month,

your submissions are very

important to us - we record this vital information so

we can better apply for grants, which in turn supports

the growing need for PAWS pet therapy.

You may occasionally receive my “friendly

reminder” emails, asking you to take a moment to log

your hours, if you haven’t already done so. And if

you wait a few more days, you may receive my

“friendly reminder” phone call. You can imagine,

with so many volunteers, that’s a lot of dialing! Help

out by logging your hours onto your volunteer profile

or emailing me by the end of each month. (Or, you

can always call me – I would love to chat!)

Looking for helpers

Thank you to the folks who have worked their way

through our Train the Trainer program and ended up

PAWS certified LEAD trainers: Bravo!

Would YOU like to be a trainer? Or how about a

training helper? You get to talk with the incoming

teams and assist in lots of ways. We need you – call

FUN FACT!

Dogs do dream! Dogs and humans have the same type

of slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement

(REM) and during this REM stage dogs can dream.

The twitching and paw movements that occur during

their sleep are signs that your pet is dreaming.

prestigious certification we offer.

If you have the following, please

Attended at least 5 community events

Done at least 25 hours of service to PAWS

O.M. Summer is here and PAWS is growing! Our staff has

been working hard to take PAWS to the next level.

Some of the projects we have been working on are

coordinating satellite Orientation/STEX/Training

sessions, community events, opening new sites, and

team gatherings. As you can see it’s an exciting time

to a part of PAWS for People. To stay up to date on

all the PAWS happenings check out our website,

Unleashing PAWS

Magic PAWS University – new classes!

Continuous improvement is one of

PAWS core values. PAWS acts on

our commitment to continuous

improvement by creating specialized programs that

give our therapy teams a deeper understanding of the

targeted population being visited.

PAWS also teaches specific strategies designed to

strengthen teams’ skills, enhance the visits’

effectiveness and possible outcomes, as well as

increase the joy and comfort generally associated with

a pet therapy visit.

We also offer courses to allow teams to work with

other teams (First Visit Assistant) and courses to help

educate the animal lover in you (Bereavement).

PAWS University courses are generally offered on

select Wednesday evenings at the PAWS office, but

we are also offering these courses at remote locations.

And if there is something you would like to see a

class offered on, let us know! Visit our website,

PAWSforPeople.org, for more information.

The Power of a Pet Visit Thanks for the update on my mom. I saw her on

Sunday. We took my father-in-law’s American

Eskimo - she is the sweetest dog and so cute. We

wheeled my mom and Fefe down to the screen

porch. She held Fefe on her lap the entire time,

hugging her and petting her.

That is a wonderful place for a visit. She always

loved screen porches. When we arrived she was in

the activities room sitting away from the others in

the back of the room. She had her head down and

was repeating "I want to see my mother." As soon as

we put the dog on her lap, she was transformed.

Take care and thanks so much for your visits, Kathy

With a Little Help

from our Friends

What a busy and exciting time

for PAWS Development!

As usual, we are working hard

to fund our program and

operational budget … raising

funds to ensure that more PAWS teams are trained

and ready for more visits than ever! Grants, Spring

Appeal, individual donations, in-kind donations, and

fundraising events are helping to fund our mission.

Grant awards for 2016 generously support PAWS in

many important ways, such as the Delaware

Community Foundation (DCF) Children’s Literacy

Award for books and other needs, DCF Kent County

Youth Philanthropy Board’s award for Kent County

teams, The Mushroom Festival’s funds for training

course materials, as well as program support from the

Dansko Foundation and Chichester duPont

Foundation. PAWS just received an “employee

grant” from PayPal ~ Thanks to team member Brad

Dunckel for submitting PAWS for this award!

Do More 24 Delaware was a terrific 1st year

opportunity. So many more new people NOW know

PAWS! Wonderful front-page News Journal

publicity and Barnes and Noble’s Summer Reading

Kick-off all added to our success! We won the

“Night Owl” contest with the most online donors

from 2-5 AM to kick-off the campaign. Thanks to the

talents and dedication of Wendy Lewis, Do More 24

Social Media Coordinator, we received a special

award for commitment, creativity, and spirit!

Thanks to donors’ generosity through the Do More 24

campaign and other ways, PAWS raised over $5,200.

This was a new approach to our 2016 Spring Appeal

and we appreciate all the support!

Pet Care

Corner

Fix Food-related Begging, Bolting or Bingeing

Behaviors by Playing a Fun Game

Food is a prime motivator for dogs and their food-

related behaviors usually have environmental roots. If

a puppy is raised with other puppies or dogs, they

may learn to beg or binge because they often have to

compete with the others for food. However, you can

encourage focus and self-control in your dog by

playing a simple game multiple times a day.

Game: “Not so Fast”

1. You need to have small morsels of different

food rewards from your dog’s favorite treats

(pieces of hot dog, cheese, cold-cuts, etc.)

2. Get your dog to sit and place one tiny treat on

the floor several feet away.

3. If your dog bolts to the treat, cover it with

your toes and repeat the “sit” command. Do

this until your dog remains seated and looks at

you while disregarding the treat.

4. Once your dog successfully does this, reward

him with a piece of the second treat and praise

him enthusiastically. Repeat this pattern

multiple times.

5. At the end of the game, hold your dog in a

“sit” and use a release word like “chow” that

lets your dog snag the treat on the floor.

RESEARCH…

DOGS CAN TEACH CHILDREN NEW TRICKS

Parents who can't

get their kids to

listen to them may

want to consider

getting a dog,

suggests research

by Nancy Gee,

PhD, a psychology

professor at the State University of New York. In a

study in an issue of Anthrozoos, Gee found that

preschool children with special needs followed

directions better when they performed tasks with one

of her trained poodles than they did by themselves or

when coupled with a human or stuffed dog.

In another study, Gee found that the children needed

fewer prompts to complete an object recognition task

when they were with the dogs rather than a human.

"You would think that the dogs would be distracting,

but they actually helped the child complete the task,"

said Gee. A 2007 Anthrozoos study suggested that

dogs helped enhance the children's cognitive and

gross motor skills. When the children performed tasks

such as crawling through a tunnel or completing an

obstacle course, they were faster and just as accurate

alongside one of the poodles than by themselves. Gee

said the children's attachment to the dog may increase

motivation and focus, enabling the kids to follow

instructions more closely.
