The WEA, a registered charity, is the UK’s largest voluntary sector

provider of adult education and delivers over 9,500 part-time courses for over 74,000

people each year in England and Scotland.

The WEA offers a wide ranging curriculum and we do all that we can to make your learning

experience a positive one in our friendly and supportive learning

environments.

You do not need any previous knowledge or qualifications to join most of our courses, only

a willingness to share with others your curiosity, ideas and

experience.

A better world – equal, democratic and just; through adult education the WEA challenges and inspires individuals, communities and society.

Welcometo the Workers’ Educational

Association (WEA) North West Region course brochure 2015-16.

Enrolment in person at the first session may be possible for some courses but please bear in mind that a course may be full by this time. We strongly advise that you pre-enrol on our courses wherever possible to avoid disappointment. Some courses may require that you attend a pre-enrolment session to check that the course

The WEA receives public funding from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) for the majority of its courses and this funding supplements the fees paid by students and sponsors. For most of our courses, this funding is only available for people who are 19 or over - those born before 31 August 1996. For SFA funded courses you are entitled to FREE tuition if you are in receipt of certain benefits, as listed below (or if you are dependent upon someone in receipt of those benefits). We will ask you to bring evidence of your benefit entitlement at the start of the course. For students who are required to pay a fee for their

courses, fees are shown against each course or on the page where the course appears. Course fees may vary as some courses are designed to attract ‘new’ students or to encourage people to try ‘new/target’ courses. All students will be asked to provide their date of birth at the time of completing an enrolment form. This information is required by our funders. If this information is not provided, a higher course fee will be payable as we will be unable to claim funding for you.

English, Maths and ESOL (EME) with the WEAOur English and maths courses are designed to enable students to develop their ‘functional’ English and maths skills. This means that as well as developing and improving their confidence by learning new skills and techniques, people will be able to use their skills to cope with everyday tasks such as letter writing, working out prices in shops and understanding bank statements and payment methods etc. Courses include accredited and non-accredited programmes, depending on whether students want to gain a ‘functional skills’ qualification, or simply wish to develop their skills and confidence.

WEA ESOL courses aim to improve and develop the language skills of students who do not have English as their first language so that they can play a full and active role in life and work. All our ESOL courses lead to C&G accreditation at entry levels 1 – 3. We also offer some non-accredited learning for pre-entry students who wish to develop their basic speaking and listening skills prior to enrolling onto an accredited ESOL programme.

Initial assessmentPrior to joining an EME or accredited learning programme, students are invited to attend an initial assessment session to ensure they are enrolled on the right course at the correct level.

How much do EME courses cost?English and maths courses are free to all students who meet SFA (Skills Funding Agency) eligibility (i.e. over 19 years and resident in EU or UK in the last 3 years). This does not apply to students from Scotland or Wales.

ESOL courses cost £3.10 per hour but may be free to students in receipt of means tested benefits.

For more information speak to your WEA tutor or WEA ESOL contact: Elaine Hutchings T: 07795 976392 WEA Functional Skills contact: Susan Danaei T: 07810 415765.

EmployabilityWEA employability education develops confidence, understanding and skills to help adults, at all stages of their lives, participate more fully in the world of work.We believe that decent employment is the best way to combat poverty and inequality while encouraging social mobility. Our role is to help the most disadvantaged adults, particularly those who are unemployed, are in low-paid positions or have precarious employment to develop the skills and knowledge to improve their job prospects.

Health & WellbeingWEA health education combats inequalities and promotes a social and preventative model of health and wellbeing.Health courses can often enable students to become more socially connected while physical activity programmes can significantly improve the fitness and life chances of adults vulnerable to conditions such as diabetes, stroke and coronary heart disease. As a result, the WEA helps reduce demands on medical services and supports people in taking an active part in society.

Community EngagementWEA community engagement education combats social exclusion and promotes active citizenship.Working with socially and economically disadvantaged adults along with members of marginalised communities, the WEA runs courses to help students appreciate political and social issues. Our active citizenship programmes encourage greater participation in democratic decision-making while our community volunteering courses empower students to take a stronger role in civil society.

CultureWEA cultural education broadens horizons through understanding cultures, identities and environments embodying our commitment to social purpose. We know that learning about culture can cause life-changing personal development, which teaches us to engage with ideas critically and independently. Through such learning, students develop the skills, understanding and resilience to deal with change and help shape the future.

54

Lifelong learning and courses for everyoneThe WEA organises its education provision and seeks to identify its impact in four key themes. They are Culture, Health and Wellbeing, Community Engagement and Employability. The themes are equally important and represent the fundamental needs of people living in Britain’s diverse communities. Each theme provides a context in which the WEA offers its wide and varied curriculum. In practice each WEA course will use one theme as its primary context but may also have a secondary theme where contexts overlap. Over time the WEA will link all of its subjects to each of the themes so that

students can explore each subject through the particular perspective of each theme drawing out new insights, ideas and meaning in their subject area.

All WEA provision encourages students to develop independent research and critical thinking skills, an understanding of the wider world through the broader contexts of the subject being studied and to become involved in relevant activities outside the classroom that embed and extend their learning.

All WEA courses are developed within 1 or more of the following 4 themes:

Page 57: WEA North West 2015-16 Course Brochure V2.2

Since 1903, our charitable aim has been to see that no adult is denied access to education on the basis of social, economic or personal disadvantage.A short, part-time course is often the starting point for inspiring personal transformations, from increased self-confidence to getting a first job after long-term unemployment, and learning again as an adult after childhood difficulties at school. We also run special projects with our partners to provide education, for example, to people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, adults with depression and mental health issues, ex-offenders, and men and women who are vulnerable in society. We work with hundreds of partner organisations and agencies to provide specially developed courses for people who benefit from the kind of adult education that we can provide.
