Sunday Reading Reflection

Please pray for Cody Katz and for those who love him.

The fulfillment of the great promise of God in the first reading takes place in the

Gospel today when we see Jesus sending out his servants. They have succeeded in establishing the church of which our churches are particular instances. We have the community of love and are the source of healing and delight for the world. This is ultimately because we have the words of eternal life and the means of salvation, the holy sacraments. This is why we rejoice. Nothing can get us down. Not sickness, distress, or disaster. With Christ we will do bravely. When evil threatens we talk to God's servants in the Church and we are revived, hearing the promises again, and being fed with delight by God through his saving

Prayer Families Needed If you have 5 or 10 minutes a day to say a prayer for a newly baptized child and their family, we need you! This helps our new families to feel a part of our larger St. John’s family. We have two celebrations a year to welcome all newly baptized families to our family. So all you need to do is make a commitment for 6 months at a time. Please help by taking a picture - leave the babies name then your name and address on the slip provided. This

Upcoming Holy Day of Obligation Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

7:00 p.m. Vigil Wednesday, August 14 8:30 a.m. Thursday, August 15 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 15

This is the principal feast of Mary. It has a double purpose: first, the happy departure of Mary from this life and second, the assumption of her body into heaven. Departure from this world and entrance into the next is the same movement in two different expressions. Little is known for certain about the day, year and manner of Mary's death. The dates assigned for it vary between three and fifteen years after Jesus' Ascension. Since Mary was preserved free from all stain of original sin, she was spared bodily decay and was taken up body and soul into heaven once her earthly life was over. Thus the Lord has exalted her as Queen over all things. ~ Bostoncatholic.org

~Marion Parker

Do you know someone that could use prayers? “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:6-7

NABRE) Do you know someone that is sick, having surgery, about to start a new job, lost a job, looking for a job, about to go to college, or any of the other million reasons one would ask for prayers. Sometimes we hesitate to ask others for prayers because we think that other people have it much worse than we do and so they have more of a right to prayers. That God is busy dealing with all those really sick people, or the people dying and so I don’t want to bother Him by asking for my prayers that I find a job, or that my headaches go away, or I can find the money to pay my bills this month. This is not true! Our God is a God of infinite possibilities. He is not busy with

other more important things. He loves each of us more than we can imagine and he cares about every small detail of our life. Many of us think sometimes that we are asking too much of God, but in reality we are not asking enough. God wants us to turn to him in our time of need, in our time of rejoicing, in our time of uncertainty. He wants to be there for us. So, if you have a prayer request, big or small, our church has a prayer line just for you. You can call or email in your request and then it will be emailed out to a group of fellow parishioners that promise to pray for you. The requests are kept confidential and only include a first name and the request. However, the first name does not need to be included if you don’t want it to. Also, if the nature of the request is such that you don’t feel comfortable sharing you can say “private intentions.” God knows our needs and our prayers can be answered even if those praying for us don’t know the specifics. Here is what you can do: Email: [email protected] and include the following info First name of person needing prayers and the prayer request? (What do they need?) (Ex. Catherine needs prayers for her family) Call:(860) 481-0959leave a message with first name and prayer request if no one answers.

I will also add your prayer request to the Lourdes Prayer Line so your petition / prayer request will be placed at the Grotto in Lourdes, as quickly as possible. Millions of pilgrims go to Lourdes each year and many of them place their prayers at the Grotto.

Do you have a few spare minutes to make a difference

in someone’s life? Volunteer to be one of our prayer warriors. When someone sends us a prayer request, an email will be sent to all of the prayer warriors. All you need to do is say a prayer for that person. It will only take a moment of your time but could

change that person’s life. If you would like to be a prayer warrior, emails St.JsPrayerLine with your name and email address.

Our collection this past weekend was: $4,108.00. Our 2nd collection for Fr. John Baptist – Mission Appeal was: $2,331.00

This weekend’s 2nd collection is for our mortgage. There is no 2nd collection next weekend. To date we have received $14,846.00 towards our goal of $22,305.00 for the Catholic Appeal. We are at approximately 67% of our assessment. If we don’t raise the entire $22,305.00, we will be billed by the Archdiocese for the amount that we are short. Just as a reminder, I’m publishing the below information again……. I’ve received a few questions about the difference between the Inspiring Hope Campaign that we ran last year, and the Catholic Appeal, that is going on now. The Inspiring Hope Campaign is a 5-year, Capital Campaign. That means that those people who signed up for this, are giving a certain amount for the next 5 years in order to help St. John’s take care of capital concerns. In other words, we are going to spend the money on large items (think of: painting the church, paving the church parking lot, etc). These are big dollar items that will be of value to the church for many years to come.

The Catholic Appeal is a yearly appeal for money to help the Archdiocese of Boston with their effort to help us out. Each year this goal is based on an average of our previous 3-year Offertory Income multiplied by 10%. So, for the past 3 years our average yearly

offertory was: $223,050.00. 10% of that is $22,305.00. That means that this year we need to raise $22,305.00. This money will be sent to the diocese to take care of the many expenses that they have. This includes supporting offices in the diocese, as well as our parish, in areas such as: Marriage Ministry, Clergy Support, Vocations Office, Faith Formation, Human Resources, Finance and Accounting, Property Management, RCIA, Pro-Life Ministry, College Campus Ministry, Cardinal’s Office, etc. Please go to www.bostoncatholicappeal.org for a list of the many, many offices this appeal supports. As I’ve said before, we have used many of these offices while building our new Religious Ed / Parish Center. Our new Deacon, Chuck Kelley was supported throughout his journey by the money raised from this appeal, we have our insurance on all of our buildings managed by the personnel at the Boston Archdiocese – all of these are paid for by the money that is raised during this appeal.
