September Pastoral Letter

Dear Friends in Christ:

Everything we do in worship has meaning. The furniture, the items we use, even the design of the worship space itself has symbolic pur-

pose. That is why we give them so much care and attention. What they mean might not be obvious to those who are unfamiliar with tra-ditional liturgical worship. When we know what these subtle messag-es are, they teach us about the Christian faith and have great beauty. For instance, we vary the colors used in worship (such as the pastor’s stole and the cloth hanging on the pulpit) in accord with the season of

the church year and holidays. To wit,

+ Green is the color used in the Epiphany season and for Sundays after Pentecost. Light green reminds us of growing grass and crops. We use it to symbolize the church growing under the Holy Spirit’s direction. One variation on this theme (which I try to fol-low) is using dark green in the fall and in the Epiphany season in winter to represent completed growth and evergreen trees and

plants

+ White is the color of purity and holiness. It is used for festivals and seasons honoring Christ, such as Christmas and Easter. Gold, like the precious metal, is used exclusively on Easter Sun-day, the Queen of Festivals.

+ Red, the color of fire, is used for festivals of the Holy Spirit, such as

the Day of Pentecost and Reformation Day. As it is also the color of blood, red is used to commemorate the martyrs of our faith.

+ Purples signifies royalty. It also bespeaks repentance. Purple is the color used in the penitential seasons of Lent and Advent. Lent prepares us for King Jesus to be enthroned on the cross; Advent prepares us for the birth of Christ our King. Blue, the color of the

sky, representing Heaven, hope, and the Virgin Mary, is sometimes used in Advent these days.

+ Black, the color associated with death and mourning, is only used on the solemn days of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, if any col-or is used at all.

An appreciation of how these liturgical colors are used reminds us how God’s Word engages and appeals to all our senses, including vi-sion. They can give us an experience of how the seasons of the year, along with the seasons of the church year, our scripture readings,

and hymns, and all that we do in worship are interconnected with our daily lives. Glory be to God. --Pastor Ash

News from the Dorcas Circle

Although we have not been meeting since the fall, we’ve been

very busy.

Three quilts have been given away. We made a donation to

Bethesda in memory of Betty Havens. She was the heart of

Dorcas for many years. Dorcas began in the 1930s. Jane

tells me that our relationship with Bethesda goes back to Al-

ma Putzman’s daughter living there after her parents passed

away.

We have also made several quilt tops and received lots of fab-

ric from Brenda Kruger.

At our first meeting of the year, we tied a lovely quilt that

Brenda made. It was beige and coral. We still have many

quilts that were made long before the virus and are available

to those in need.

If you need something to do during the epidemic, join us at

Dorcas.

Little Tots Sunday School:

Teacher: Who was Peter?

Little Boy: A Wabbit?

A Hundred Years Ago in Wellsville

The woes of COVID-19 remind us and may cause us to question the time of the Spanish Influenza. Was that time like we

have experienced these past months – and still are today?

Our church and village historian Jane Pinney knew exactly where to search in our church archives. She quickly found sev-eral articles of interest that originally appeared in our local

newspaper.

~ The First Hospital ~

It seems Wellsville did not have a hospital. Amazing! The basement of the current Episcopal Church became the “first;” however, within two days it reached capacity. All was soon moved to Odd Fellows establishment on West Genesee St, a large structure near our old church and parsonage. This dwelling lat-er became the Temple Theater. Perhaps some of us remember

watching Saturday afternoon westerns there.

Council Highlights ……………. August Meeting

A productive, informative meeting was held on Monday, Au-gust 24. Topics ranged from the usual finance to very notable up-coming events. Once again your Council reps attended in full

force. Kudos go to three guests for attending.

September has three very important happenings – each

drawing your interest and involvement.

1. Cabbage Cutting – Sunday afternoon, September 13.

Come and Cheer …………… Come and Help

Every little bit of cutting, shredding, mashing, salting helps.

No skills needed. Work a little – work a lot.

2. Affirmation of Installation of Pastor Ash

Remember Sunday, May 3rd? It was a closed, pandemic-wrought service. Yet we did have a wonderful parade of cars

and people.

This time it will be a parade of people in the pews. The ser-vice is short. Eastern District President Chris Wicher is presid-ing. The Bell Choir is playing. All promises to be a very up-

beat, inspiring worship service.

Dinner follows in the Fellowship Hall with Chef Shelly in charge. Expect some gourmet delights for a cost of only $5; advance sign-up is necessary by September 16th. Meals will be delivered to shut-ins, upon their request by phoning the

church at 593-3311.

3. Rally Day - Sunday, September 27

Evangelism Chair Marsha Sick has undertaken organizing this very entertaining event. After a short worship service, chil-dren will be delighted with animals in the church “barnyard.” Rich Shear is bringing a horse, Carol Barnes will have her pet lamb, Dan Vossler is offering the golden calf, and Dave Pinney

has promised chickens. Is anyone out there with bunnies?

Sunday School Bible Class for Adults begins on September

13th with the intended study of the book of John.

Dave Pinney reported the roof is getting cleaned up and likely a few more patches will be done. He added a touch of humor about his adventurous crawling underneath the sanctuary to

turn off the outside water faucet.

A detailed treasurer’s report is posted on the bulletin board outside the office; however, the brief version for January - July

shows:

Gallman-Hawley $ 84,240

Various Investments $ 256,417

Expenses-to-Date $ 77,698

Income-to-Date $ 71,241

Designated Other Income $ 10,407

Fiscal Notes of Interest:

Despite the pandemic times, all our investments show gains over last month. Since January, this increase is approximately $26,000. Another $4000 has been transferred from the general account to the Cott Ac-

count ($2000) and the Capitol Account ($2000).

Payroll expenses (salaries, benefits, FICA, etc) are about

69% of our expenditures.

Just a few laughs

There were identical twins. One became a minister and the other be-came a physician. It was difficult to tell them apart. A man met one of them on the street and said, “Are you the twin who preaches?” “No”

came the answer, “I’m the one who practices.”

Q: Why was Solomon the Wisest Man in the World?

A: Because he had so many wives to advise him

We began with the Pledge of Allegiance

and the National Anthem

All the children to-gether: A talented bunch! And many family members in

attendance

Pastor Ash led the children in “Jesus

Loves Me” with American Sign Lan-guage signs for the

grand finale.

Evangelism Committee

Robert Fulghum is well known for his Quotes. I think most of them are definitely worth listening to. They have humor and truth along side each other. Of course, most are comment sense

quotes.

One of my favorite Quotes comes from his famous book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Just a few of

my favorites from that are,

• Share everything

• Play fair

• Don’t take things that aren’t yours

• Take a nap every afternoon

• When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic,

hold hands, and stick together.

10

What does the Bible say about these? I’m using the NIV Bible

Share everything: Acts 4:32 All the believers one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his

own,but they shared everything they had.

Play fair: Proverbs 1:3 for acquiring disciplined and prudent life,

doing what is right and just and fair.

Don’t take things that aren’t yours: Malachi 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask ‘how do we rob you?’ “ in

tithes and offerings.

Take a nap every afternoon: Psalms 4:8 I will lie down and

sleep in peace, for you alone , O Lord make me dwell in safety.

When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together: Ephesians 4:3 Make every effort to

keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Kindergarteners learn a lot. They learn to share, wait their turn, use kind words and many, many life skills at a very young age. The teachers who prepare these kids need to have the very skills they are trying to teach them. Teachers teach by example. Kids

see and learn by example.

My favorite quote is the last one. Hold hands and stick together. Remember as a child you would get with your friends and could-n’t keep your hands from touching each other? Sitting practically

on top of each other. You couldn’t get close enough.

I need to hang around more kindergartners and be reminded

how to love unconditionally.

How has God blessed you today?

continued from page 4

According to the Wellsville Daily Reporter, Wellsville’s Emer-gency Hospital was run by the Red Cross and skilled volunteers. The February 10, 1920, article was filled with information. Accord-ing to Mrs. Jones, the apparent hospital head, there was “no sense in being delicate about it (one’s illness). To prevent the influenza from spreading, a patient needed to take shelter in this harbor,….

and avail themselves of its (the hospital’s) splendid appointments.”

~ Health Insurance ??? ~

There was evidently no such thing as health insurance. As said, “those who are able financially were expected to pay for their treatment and pay their physician; where the patients were unable

to pay, the Red Cross would foot the bill.

Even children were placed in this emergency setting, yet the food must have been questionable. As stated in the Reporter arti-cle, “The youngsters found fault because they had to eat broth, and one boy said he wanted weiners. But that is a place where the boarders didn’t get all they called for, and that is why they re-

covered so quickly.”

~ A Sick Lutheran – A Caring Lutheran ~

We find one good Lutheran on the newspaper’s sick list - Ed-ward Braunschweiger. Miss Agnes Gallman, another good church member, was one of his caring nurses. As reported in the paper, Mr. Braunschweiger was on the brink of death, but he fortunately

recovered.

~ Finally, Back to Normal ~

As businesses and organizations have been closed in 2020, so they were for periods of time throughout 1918-1920. After Wellsville’s nearly 1000 cases finally cleared, the theaters, church-es, and schools reopened. Like today, the gathering of large

crowds was prohibited.

Such were the times; such are the times ….. 100 years ago,

100 years later.

Daycare: Busy and Puzzling

Busy and Puzzling are two very apt words to describe day-

care life for late August and the beginning of September.

BUSY – The children are active, energetic, and really on-the-go. School-agers, it seems, have been enjoying summer vaca-

tion since mid-March when the school shut-down occurred. Our creative staff have kept these youngsters occupied with their an-nual summer talent show for parents and grandparents, enjoying a Hawaiian theme, participating in a carnival – and even finding out what a real coconut looks like and tastes. It is time for this

flock to go to back to school!

Our babies are multiplying. With so many numerous re-quests, a second baby room has been added. New babies are ar-riving at our doorstep, and they are slowly and gradually becom-

ing acclimated – although with lots of whining and crying. These rooms require the patience of Job! Our new room set-up is hope-fully being paid for through Gov. Cuomo’s Forward CARES

Grant. We await word on that.

The Preschool (downstairs groups) are also full in enroll-ment for September. Some of those children are leaving for their first experience at the public schools. Little Misses Grace Cole and Avriella Loper are going to pre-K. They are excited. Miss

Emma Hunt, Nancy’s granddaughter, already started kindergar-ten at her Pennsylvania school. After her first day, she an-

nounced she was ready for college. The kids are growing up!

And now for the PUZZLING part – The local county schools are running a mixed mess of back-to-school schedules. This means for parents to work weekdays, children attending most ar-ea schools may or may not have on-site school five days a week. It is different districts - different days….AND parents needing

childcare AND wanting our daycare to staff accordingly. Andover is alternating weeks of half days of school; GV has Fridays off; B-R has Wednesdays off. Fortunately, Wellsville Elementary is open five days/week. At this point we are attempting a plan to help

these parents.

13

continued

ACCORD has just completed a statistical study of our county along with Wyoming and Cattaraugus for childcare avail-

ability. For Allegany, 62% of childcare slots, as compared with pre-pandemic times, are no longer available. Daycares have closed. Only two full-fledged daycares for our county remain open – ours and Montessori. We are the only center taking ages 6 months and up; Montessori begins at age 3 and toilet-trained. Parents’ dilemma with public school schedules and the chore of figuring out childcare has become a real problem. Add the dis-mal fiscal picture – escalating mandated payroll costs, parents facing increased tuition, the state’s possible(?) childcare funding. Our daycare is most thankful to have United Way grant monies. Thank You – United Way!!! (Hint – Hint: Support our local United

Way with their Fall Fundraiser.)
