Livingston:theCaribbeanbiodiversitywonderlandofGuatemalaIzabal,oneoftheregionaldepartmentsofGuatemalathatoffersavarietyofrecreationalactivities,ishometonumerousnatureparksanddiversenaturallandscapes.Therearewhitesandybeachesashortboattripaway,withtalljungle-coveredmountainsinthebackground,andtheMesoamericanReefSystemintheCaribbeanSeaonthehorizoninfrontofyou.Mangroveswamps,seagrass,islands,cenotes,caves,karstgeologycanyonsandstreamsofcrystalclearwateraboundalongtheRioDulceandLakeIzabalcoastorinland.AllthistogethermakesLivingstononeofthedestinationsfortouristswantingtodobird-watching,explorecaves,gethealthyexercisehikingthroughtrailsintherainforest.Inadditiontotheincrediblefloraandfaunathatthemunicipalityoffers,threedifferentculturescoexistintheecosystem(MayanQ’eqchi’,GarifunaandLadinos).Inordertoconservethebiodiversityfoundinthemunicipalityandthatcontinuestobeofbenefittotheecosystem,itisnecessarytohaveanupdatedrecordofthespeciesthatinhabithereandthusbeabletodetectchangesinthespeciespopulation.ThankstotheeffortsofdifferentinstitutionsfocusedonenvironmentalimprovementprojectsatvarioussitesinLivingston(FUNDAECO(RíoSarstun),CONAP(RíoDulce),CECON-USAC(Chocón-Machacas),ARNPG(morethantenprivatereserves),amongmanyothers)therearerecordsofspeciesofflora,faunaandecosystemsofthismunicipalityofIzabal.
