NEWS YOU CAN USE! MAYBE SOME NEW IDEAS!

Serving the Needs of the Community and Beyond Since 1982 COLLEYVILLE LIONS CLUB - BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

JULY - AUGUST 2021

LIONS SUPPORT BRAILLE BOOKS Braille storybooks are important for Lions Clubs and for the visually impaired children Lions serve. Every library should have them and making them freely accessible should be the responsibility of every Lions club. Braille books are in the same category as those books in large print. And the Lions logo should be displayed on book covers and shelf signage. Supporting the local library in this way, as an ongoing project, means a club makes Braille books a budget line item. Anyone willing to see if that is a need in our communities?

Membership Chair Should Get New name: MemRet Chair

Recruiting is only part of the job. The other part is the co-equal responsibility of retention. One person needs to do retention and none better than the Membership Chair. No member feels the futility of losing a member more than the recruiter. Gaining one and keeping one is better managed by the MemRet Chairperson who is totally committed to keeping the club and its many services at full strength.

PANCREATIC CANCER MAY BE A THING OF THE PAST ALL BECAUSE OF THE PROTEIN NETRIN-G1

Researchers have discovered that a protein thought to only be involved in the development of neurons in the brain also plays a major role in the development and growth of pancreatic cancer. Their findings demonstrate for the first time how the protein, called Netrin-G1,helps pancreatic cancer cells survive by protecting them from the immune system and supplying them with nutrients. Pancreatic cancer is difficult to treat because tumors often develop extra connective tissue throughout the pancreas. This connective tissue aids the growth of pancreatic cancer and provides a physical and biochemical protective barrier against drugs and the immune system. This protective barrier is made up of a type of cell called a cancer associated fibroblast (CAF), which interacts with cancer cells to help them grow and survive. The research effort found that an antibody that neutralizes Netrin-G1 was able to stunt the development of progression of pancreatic tumors in mice, demonstrating the potential of developing new treatments for pancreatic cancer that target Netrin-G1. Worldwide, pancreatic cancer is the seventh leading cause of cancer related deaths. The toll is higher in the developed countries. In the United States, for example, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths and is predicted to become second in 2021.
