LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Season’s Greetings and welcome to GMCLA’s annual Holiday Spectacular: Cool Yule! Every year, we hear from our audience members that it doesn’t feel like the holiday season until they attend GMCLA’s Holiday Spectacular. Cool Yule will definitely get you in the holiday spirit as 250 gay men perform holiday favorites “with a twist.” You’ll experience sleigh rides, jingle bells, boogie woogie Santas, hipster reindeer, lumberjacks, and yes, even fruitcakes. We are delighted to welcome the handsome and talented Cheyenne Jackson as our featured guest along with a rockin’ big band of instrumentalists. In January, GMCLA will join Alan Cumming and the LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall for a special one day only concert called Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs. In March, GMCLA joins our sisters in song – VOX Femina as they celebrate their 20th anniversary season with a performance of Carmina Burana.

On April 1 & 2, 2017, GMCLA presents our spring concert, He Had It Coming, featuring a star of stage, screen, and television, but we have to wait a bit longer before we can announce who. On July 8, GMCLA embarks on a mission-focused concert event called I Rise at Walt Disney Concert Hall. I Rise will be a community focused concert event that examines the journey of the LGBT and faith communities, celebrates those communities that are open and affirming, and explores the future that is possible. This concert focuses on a message of love, acceptance, and hope in an effort provide healing between communities that are often at odds with each other. I Rise will be like no other concert performed by GMCLA and one that you will not want to miss. Whether you and your family have been coming for years or this is your first time, we are delighted to have you with us tonight as part of our chorus family! On behalf of all the members of GMCLA and our Board of Directors, I wish all of you a most joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year. Thank you for your support of GMCLA. Happy Holidays!

GMCLA: 38 YEARS OF MUSIC WITH A MISSION

Celebrating 38 years, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles has built an inter na tional rep u ta tion for musical excellence while remain ing deeply rooted in ser vice to the Los Angeles com mu nity. Hailed by the Los Ange les Times as “one of the last impor tant links to a glo ri ous tra di tion in music.”

With an impressive assemblage of 250+ men, GMCLA is one of the country’s largest all-male choruses and committed to inspiring and empowering individuals and communities through transformational musical experiences.

We are the first openly gay chorus to tour central Europe (1991), broadcast over Russian TV (1999), tour South America (2006) and perform for two sitting U.S. Presidents. We have commissioned hundreds of original works and new arrangements and performed on the Academy Awards, VH1 Awards, Dance Moms, Parks & Recreation, Access Hollywood & I Am Cait.

Your commitment and support allows us to produce exciting and innovative musical performances and expand our two vital youth outreach programs, the Alive Music Project and it gets better Tour.

For over 9 years, we have taken our Alive Music Project into middle and high schools in the Los Angeles area with a message of acceptance and hope through music - sharing our personal stories and performing a mini concert.

Over 46,000 students have heard messages busting LGBT stereotypes, helping to improve self-esteem and teaching acceptance and equality. As an on-going relationship with the schools, we invite the students to be our guests at our concerts. We even provide free transportation to the theater.

With incidents of bullying on the rise in schools and young people taking their own lives because they feel isolated and alone, GMCLA created the it gets better Tour, a unique week of educational workshops culminating in a moving musical theater performance - traveling to small cities across the country working with students, educators, local leaders and politicians to transform communities and convey the message of hope to young people dealing with the issues of acceptance and bullying.

Over the past four years, we have visited 22 cities, working with hundreds of different community organizations, and reaching over 44,000 people. We know we are making a difference and impacting the lives of so many LGBTQ youth.

If you would like to support our youth outreach programs with a donation, please visit gmcla.org/donate
