Fire safety at the University Library in Lund.

The University Library is a specialist library forming part of the Lund University Library network. This network consists of 26 libraries. The University Library is its specialist library, with responsibility for historical collections, special collections and Swedish print. In 2013, the collections in this library took up approximately 107 kilometres of shelving; and approximately 650 metres of shelving are required every year to accommodate additional volumes.

The University Library is currently implementing a number of major digitisation projects. For instance, all mediaeval manuscripts will be digitised and made available to researchers. The building’s fire safety has been modernised in connection with this.

The library, which was completed in 1907, was constructed using steel girders. There is always a risk of girders melting in the event of fire, and this is why a decision has been made to protect the building using the high-tech, low impact SEM-SAFE water mist system from Danfoss Semco.

Installation of the system began in the first quarter of 2014 and was completed in the first quarter of 2015. The University Library is now protected by a total of 780 nozzles which have been tested in accordance with CEN/TS 14972 and the VdS standard for risk class OH1.

The risk of water damage is minimised as most of the water will vaporise. The water pressure is just over 100 bar and the droplet size 10-50 µ.

The University Library in Lund is protected by a total of 780 nozzles.

Eco-friendly fire extinguishing with water mist.

Our high-tech sprinkler systems are made up of booster pumps, stainless pipes and special mist nozzles and are connected to the regular water supply. One litre of water which has been vaporised produces 1700 litres of water vapour. The tiny droplets of water in the mist effectively absorb the thermal radiation and isolate the fire. Hidden fires can also be extinguished as the water mist penetrates and reaches the seat of any fire which is difficult to access.

The stainless steel valves are resistant to rust, dirt and heat. The compact design makes them easy to install and use.

These systems do not require airtight rooms and can be integrated into the most complex structures. Installing water mist sprinklers also has an important architectural advantage – the tiny pipes can be integrated everywhere without being visible.

The special nozzles quickly pinpoint the seat of a fire and prevent the fire spreading.

Powerful pump stations with minimal systems maintenance.

Water mist sprinkler system is an ideal solution for locations where other extinguishing systems would not work.
