Marshall’s Walk-on ProgramSince Marshall’s days of NCAA Division I-AA

dominance, walk-ons have played a tremendous role inthe Thundering Herd’s success on the gridiron.

Every year, there are players making a huge impacton the playing field who didn’t come to Marshall on anathletic scholarship. Those players walked on with thehope of one day donning the Green and White, earning ascholarship, and winning a championship.

“At Marshall, walk-ons are the life blood of our footballprogram. We welcome each and every walk-on, as theyplay such an important role in our football program’ssuccess,” head coach Bob Pruett said.

Marshall boasts such walk-ons as 1999 NFL Rookieof the Year Randy Moss and current Minnesota VikingBilly Lyon. Both came to Marshall as walk-ons beforeearning scholarships.

“Walking on at Marshall was one of the bestdecisions I ever made,” former linebacker Michael Owenssaid. “I had some other opportunities, but Marshall offeredme the best deal by giving me the chance to walk-on.

“I came in and was able to prove myself and earn ascholarship. I think everything worked out great for mehere at Marshall.”

There are a number of walk-on players on theMarshall roster who are expected to contribute this yearthat started out as walk-ons. They continue a legacy ofsuccess from the Marshall walk-on program.
