Shalom Chaverim, A yeshiva student met the great Rabbi

Yisrael Meir the Kohen, known as the Chofetz Chaim, on a train. The yeshiva

student asked the Chofetz Chaim where he was going, and the Chofetz Chaim explained he was going to see the Alps. The yeshiva student was shocked that this

great rabbi would take time away from his Torah study to go sightseeing. After all isn’t that bitul Torah (nullification of an

opportunity to study Torah)? The Chofetz Chaim answered that when his time came

and G-d asked him “So what did you think of my Alps, Rabbi?” he didn’t want to answer, “I never made time to see them.” In fact, according to the Talmud we are asked certain

questions after our earthly life is over, as we seek admission to Olam Haba (The World to Come). One of those questions

is, “Did you take advantage of all of the pleasures of this world?”

Like the Chofetz Chaim we to want to ensure that we take part in the pleasures of G-d’s beautiful world. Of course,

there are many ways you can do this, particularly over the summer. Let me suggest one in particular: joining on a Sunday morning to play softball in our Jewish community

softball league. It is a great opportunity to play ball (no talent required) and schmooz with friends while enjoying G-d’s

beautiful outdoors. I am looking forward to seeing you on the ball field (Please see the schedule below). Play Ball!

Kol Tuv,

Rabbi Saks

On April 25, a group of wonderful participants called “Team Helen" walked in the National Brain Tumor Society

walk at the Wilmington waterfront. We did this to honor the memory of Helen Winslow and all others who have

been victims of brain tumors. I want to thank the devoted participants from AKSE, including Jonathan Jaffe, Syl-

via Wagman, Roseanne Griff-Cabelli, Mike Cabelli, Wendy Shlossman, Linda and Chris Sereduke, Karen Moss,

and Cindy Goldstein. We raised over $3000 to find a cure for brain tumors.

Sincere thanks from Deb Zussman, team captain.

fellowship and

friendship with your

AKSE CONGREGANT (CUSTOMER) SERVICE QUERY

Dear AKSE Congregant: The AKSE Board of Governors and I want to make sure that there is nothing in the way

of your enjoyment and participation in all that AKSE has to offer. (The intent is not to wrestle here with

religious or philosophical issues—we welcome those concerns but there are other venues in which to pursue

those questions) .

Rather we are reaching out to congregants to identify ways our AKSE community can do more and better to

meet your everyday needs.

● Are transportation issues preventing you from attending synagogue events? We may be able to

resolve that problem. There are members who might be able to provide transportation. Please call the office at

302 762 2705 or email [email protected] and explain your situation and or transportation need. We will try and

line up someone to help. This is not envisioned as a short notice or immediate problem solution, but rather a

foreseen situation, where with phone calls and some planning a solution might be possible. Please let us know if

we can help.

● Kesher committee—Do you know this exists? The Kesher Committee consists of AKSE members

who willingly give of their time to help other members in need. If an AKSE member needs meals prepared, a ride

to an appointment, an errand done, or just a friendly visit, those on the committee are there to help. Debra

Zussman is the chairperson and can be reached at (302) 529-1054. If you would like to participate or if you know

someone in need of help, please call.

● Communications—Are you receiving: The Shofar—snail mail / email copies, Weekly Newsletter

e mail blasts, responses to office queries, event reservation confirmations, contribution confirmations in a

satisfactory way?

● Any other thoughts, ideas, questions, suggestions?

WHAT'S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN?

I know that cookie recipes are a dime a dozen. I have millions of wonderful cookie recipes that I pick

from when I get the urge to turn on the oven and spend hours waiting for them to bake. My chocolate

chip cookie recipe was given to me about 40 years ago by a neighbor. My dear friend, Cathy Restaino ,

gave me the Betty Crocker recipe and over the years my daughter Laura has played with the perfect

recipe and made it even better. It is now a “Laura Kupferman Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie.” Well,

now I have a new version. I got the recipe a few weeks ago and have since made 3 batches of these

cookie wonders. Everyone that has tasted them says they are a go for this column. They are much crunchier that the

Perfect Chocolate Cookie!

Actually, my thoughts went back to when the kids were out of school for the summer. They are easy to make, kids can

help, can be frozen if not gobbled up immediately and make a very large batch. I would think they would even be great

with a slice of ice cream in between 2 cookies and individually wrapped and frozen for an ice cream sandwich. You can

always change the recipe around and add different ingredients along with the chocolate chips, or eliminate what ingredients

you family might not enjoy. Anything goes! These are called Dishpan Cookies and the recipe is from The Southern Plate

Cookbook. I found it on Facebook.

Dishpan Cookies

2 cups light brown sugar

1 cup white sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 cups oil

4 eggs

4 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 quick oats

4 cups cornflakes

1 cup coconut

1 cup chopped dates

1 cup chocolate chips (or 1/2 chocolate chips and 1/2 white chocolate chips)

Optional- 1/2 dry cranberries or 1/2 cup raisins

In a very large bowl or dishpan cream sugars, vanilla, oil, and eggs. Add flour, baking soda and salt. Fold in cornflakes

and rest of the yummy ingredients.

Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup onto ungreased cookie sheets. The batter might be a little dry and you have to moosh it

together with your hand to get it to form a ball when you put them onto the pan. If you use a hand mixer try not to set the

motor on fire, it is a thick batter. My stand up Mix Master works well with the batter in the amounts I have given

you. *** Oh, these cookies spread while baking so space them carefully on the baking pan.

Bake for 12 minutes at 375 degrees or until edges are tightly browned if you want them to be crunchy. Bake a little less

time for soft and bake a little longer for crispy cookies.

Let cookies cool on pan and set for a few minutes before transferring to a baking rack to complete cool.

*** You can half or double the recipe. If you double it you won't have to turn that oven for more batches of these

wonderful cookies. They freeze well and can even be a quick breakfast with some yogurt. I guarantee the kids will love

them. I put some pecans in my first batch and next time I might add some M&M's.

I hope you enjoy these cookies and keep enough on hand for a picnic or a snack when you just need something sweet and

has lots of tasty ingredients. Thanks and until next time…........ Meryl
