LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT

Call to Worship One: Sing a song of thanksgiving. Many: Declare God’s wondrous deeds. One: For the LORD dwells among the people; Many: The glory of God abides with us.

Opening Hymn: Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty (Hymnal #35) Text: Joachim Neander, 1680; trans. Catherine Winkworth, 1863, alt.; Music: Stralsund Ernewerten Gesangbuch,

1863; harm. The Chorale Book for England, 1863 Praise ye the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; join me in glad adoration! Praise ye the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been granted in what he ordaineth? Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly for aye we adore him.

Though I May Speak Words and Music by John Weaver (Harm.) and Hal Hopson Though I may speak with bravest fire And have the gift to all inspire And have not love, my words are vain As sounding brass and hopeless gain Though I may give all I possess And stringing so my love profess But not be giv’n by love within The profit soon turns strangely thin Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control Our spirits long to be made whole Let inward love guide every deed By this we worship and are freed

Scripture Reading So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. (1 John 4:16)

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

Preparation for Prayer: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Hymnal #223) Text: Isaac Watts, 1707; Music: Lowell Mason, 1824

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ my God All the vain things that charm me most I sacrifice them to his blood See, from his head, his hands, his feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down Did e’er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Where the whole realm of nature mine That were a present far too small Love so amazing, so divine Demands my soul, my life, my all

Prayer of Confession Awesome and compassionate God, You have loved us with unfailing, self-giving mercy, but we have not loved you. You constantly call us, but we do not listen. You ask us to love, but we walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We condone evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed. God of grace, as you come to us in mercy, we repent in spirit and in truth, admit our sin, and gratefully receive your forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Redeemer.

Response: I Come with Joy Words by Brian Wren; Music: American Folk Melody I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved, and free In awe and wonder to recall his life laid down for me, his life laid down for me I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed The new community of love in Christ’s communion bread, in Christ’s communion bread Chorus: I come with joy to meet my Lord 2x

As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends, and strangers now are friends And thus with joy we meet our Lord. His presence, always near Is in such friendship better known: we see and praise him here, we see and praise him here, Chorus 2x

Scripture: John 15:1–12 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

Reflection: The Love of God Text and Music: Frederick M. Lehman The love of God is greater far Than tongue or pen can ever tell It goes beyond the highest star And reaches to the lowest hell The guilty pair, bowed down with care God gave his Son to win God’s erring child he reconciled And pardoned from his sin refrain: O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure The saints’ and angels’ song Could we with ink the ocean fill And were the skies of parchment made Were ev’ry stalk on earth a quill And ev’ryone a scribe by trade To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry

Nor could the scroll contain the whole Tho stretched from sky to sky refrain

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Doxology: Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow (Hymnal #606) Text: Thomas Ken, 1695; 1709; Musci: Genevan Psalter, 1551

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow Praise God, all creatures here below Praise God above, ye heavenly host Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
